I use hydrogen peroxide spritz too as data shows it helps however after doing a dry hatch 18 days when I go into lockdown I bump the humidity up so nobody gets shrink wrapped in the egg

Interesting, thank you Jenn. We are in a pretty humid area so our lockdown humidity is near 20%. How is your hatch rate with the higher humidity during lockdown?
@lessycurls

Interesting, I do a dry hatch, and on day 19, remove the turner, and bump humidity up. During the dry incubation period I keep humidity between 25 and 30

With the protocol being to bump the humidity up at lockdown, could you give some insight on this and why it works? 😊 very interesting
@susanmccormick4627

To keep the membrane soft so chicks can peck out and not stick to the chicks. I have incubated chicks since the 80s, now incubating goose eggs at 60 percent humidity. When lockdown, I will be increasing the humidity to 70-75 percent.
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
For years we were under the same impression until we tried this method. The shells are much thicker with these Marans so it's possible the lower humidity helps with the chicks ability to actually break through. We're honestly not sure why it works but we do know it raised our hatch rate and wanted to share our experience. Thank you for watching!

At what age are your chicks when you can tell if they are roosters or pullets? I just hatched 6 BCM chicks and they all look the same to me! 😊 Carrollton, MO here
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
Some of them are a lot easier to spot the roosters, they will have a defined comb on top and be a little bigger than the rest. Others are not so easy but if you take a look at the underside of their wings the pullets will be slightly curved and have a trough (looks like a V), the roos are straight across on the bottom of the wing.

I have 40 eggs in the incubator without any water added. Only 15 are marans eggs...will the other breeds hatch if I continue straight thru with a dry hatch?? Or will it kill the other 25???
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
I think it would depend on what other breeds are being hatched. Some chicken eggs need the moisture where the Black Coppers don't seem to like it. I wish you luck! Thank you for watching.

I'm a little confused about the washing of the egg's? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤔 I thought the protective bloom is best to leave on?
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
@prplkises71 the bloom is there to protect the egg until hatching. When hatching the bloom doesn't need to be there. I would not wash eggs unless they are going into the incubator.

Dry hatching @lockdown ?? I thought bc the shell is so hard to candle, it's hard to get them moist enough for the chick to pick through it too... I have no luck hatching chicks as of yet (first try only 1 chick, different breed, made it, 2 others were fully developed but never hatched, when I Egg topsied them I saw they died just before.. when I was wet hatching as recommended...I am dry hatching rn and left with 5 moving inside out of the 9 BCM I had put in this time (candled last night 1 at day 14 & 4 at day 7 in the other one with a strong Torch, which is still a second test round before loading it up with mostly BCM eggs) I am keeping it around 30% rn (only adding a few drops when it starts beeping below 20% or open it when it suddenly gets to high when too many drops were added> which is quickly done) still wanted to help them the best around hatching time tho with a higher humidity... So you say it's not needed, even for these shells??
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
We have a cabinet incubator and absolutely zero water is needed to hatch these eggs. Last night pipping turned into hatching and we have about 65 or 75 chicks today. With more on the way. If you think it's too dry add a wet sponge during lockdown. Otherwise they do good without a bunch of humidity.

Very interesting. I am wondering, if the main thing isnt just making sure the eggs lose 13% of their weight either before lockdown or during. They lose weight during low humility phases. So in your case you leave the himidity up the eggs dont lose enough weight, but they will during lockdown. Crazy how many different ways you can hatch eggs lol
@tigrisvalleyfarm
@tigrisvalleyfarm Жыл бұрын
We've found the natural humidity in our area to be sufficient throughout the entire hatch. It's usually between 20 - 30%. We also leave the door shut until it's time to move them out of the turners. We appreciate your input greatly! It's difficult to get good at anything without help. So we're trying slightly different methods until the one that works best shows up!
@angelastossel2418
@angelastossel2418 Жыл бұрын
@tigrisvalleyfarm Absolutely! The best thing is to try and share with others! And yes, it totally depends on what area we live, but numbers are numbers, so sharing what works best is invaluable. I had to run my humidifier until today because humidity was getting too high, but I had to use a bit of water to get it to 55% today for lockdown.
