In this video tutorial from the American Crochet Association, we share a simple formula that shows you how to price any crochet item you make (afghans, amigurumi, hats, scarves, toys...) so that you can sell your work for a fair wage!
I wanted to actually make money selling my work, so I came up with a really easy formula that I could apply, so that I would know how to price any crochet project I made.
Should I multiply my cost of goods by three?
Should I charge for materials?
What about shipping?
Am I charging too much?
Am I charging too little?

Selena, great video. How do I price something that I haven’t made before so I don’t know how long it will take me to make?

Great question! You can time yourself making a swatch, and estimate from there. However, I do recommend that a more strategic route would be to establish core products to sell, instead of taking on special orders.

I had a question about amigurumis...since they are so time consuming and the materials are so cheap usually, how do you do a formulated price for this?

As you mentioned ,taking someone’s pattern and making a few changes and then calling your own is clearly copyright infringement. So if I make an item using paid pattern or free pattern and sell the item should it be considered under copyright infringement too?
@AmericanCrochetAssociation
@AmericanCrochetAssociation 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Ideally, you would get permission to sell finished items from a pattern.

With clothing would you charge more for larger sizes? Because they need more yarn. Only I have made a small cardigan with half the amount of yarn balls and I wouldn't have to charge too much, but I made one in a larger Size and if I charged the same as the small I'd make no profit x

Great question! The formula outlined here helps you to price any item, no matter the project type, size, or amount of yarn used. What did you think after watching this video? oh lord i love this but there is no way for a king size star trek afghan that any one is paying 2 grand, because the afghan took 28 days at 8 hrs a day. like i agree with yarn times 3 is to low but yeah people don't see us as worth our time. like heck in my area they don't even see people who are doing really intense labor from as deserving minimum wage let alone crafters/artist
@AmericanCrochetAssociation
@AmericanCrochetAssociation 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking time to watch! If 1 blanket takes you 8 hours a day for 28 days, then: 1) Why would you spend so much time on a project, as a job, that you wouldn't receive adequate payment for? 2) How many of these specific projects are you actually making, for profit, as a business? I hear you, but the above two questions should be asked for anything that isn't helping you to build a happy and successful business. What do you think?

Hi ..here in algeria they uses .. yarn priceX3 ..and i'm not agree with this .. Because ...when you crochet some with 0.6 mm crochet (bolero, vest...) it takes more time ... then when you crochet it with crochet 1 mm or 1.5mm it's more tiring Thank you

Hi I make hats and would like to sell them. I live in Australia and minimum wage is $20.33 so using your formula it would be $40.66 cause it takes me 3 hours to make. Then i add on costs $3.50 so all up i would charge $44.16? I wish!
@AmericanCrochetAssociation
@AmericanCrochetAssociation 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply! You can use any hourly wage you find reasonable, and the minimum wage in your local area is just a starting reference point. Your time and skill is valuable.

If you get yarn on sale do you use that price or regular price?
@AmericanCrochetAssociation
@AmericanCrochetAssociation 4 жыл бұрын
That depends. You can pass along the discounted price in the cost to customers. The idea is that you are not out of pocket on any expense needed to create the item.
@mh.1568
@mh.1568 2 жыл бұрын
Always always use the regular price! If you get a request for an item with the yarn but not on sale you would be lucky to break even.

One of the “simplest“ things that I am planning to make to sell our mug rugs. It takes me a full hour to make it from start to finish, and minimum wage in Maine is $13.80 an hour. Is it really logical to sell one mug rug for more than $15?

Does this formula mean that the faster I get, the less I charge? I feel like this is a demotion to my business
@AmericanCrochetAssociation
@AmericanCrochetAssociation 3 жыл бұрын
You should always charge a wage that gives you a living hourly rate, whatever your speed is. If you get faster / slower over time, just be sure that you are still earning a fair hourly wage.
@chojay13
@chojay13 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue that if you get faster, then your quality of work has improved (you've become more efficient) so a raise to your base rate is valid.
