I tried clogging, but I've never danced well...

When I'm playing a gig and it's cold or humid, I keep my whistle head in my armpit in between tunes. This has the added advantage of ensuring that no one wants to steal my whistle.

Thanks so much for this I'm a wet whistle blower and I just couldn't find a proper way of playing without clogging you've saved me quite a bit of stress finding a solution lol. On a side note I wish you had a song book for sale with the tabs to all these awesome songs you play on here

Good suggestions, thank you 😊 One interesting option is also a feather. Cleans up the wind way beautifly and does not pose a danger of damaging the sharp lip part. Of course one has to find an appropriate size of the feather depending on your flute. Thats how they did it in the olden days hehe.

Tooth paste on swimming goggles stops them from fogging up so it probably would help with whistles too. Nice video thanks for the tips!

thanks for these unusual but helpful tips. i too am a whistle wetter. which usually shows up in the last few notes of a tune, especially the last lower note. until i saw your brilliant video i was in despair. i thought about attending WWs anonymous but would be too embarassed to stand up and state the words - - my name is ronnie and ive been a WW for 3 years! at GFW whistle class in glasgow (scotland), my fellow students were mainly non WWs. someone even stuck my whistle tho a polysterene cup as a joke. even the phrase " fancy a pint to wet your whistle" had a hidden significance for me. seriously this condition is worse than BW. if my wife asked if i had just been WWing, i would rather say that i had been with a call girl. although in scotland this can mean one of 2 things. the second being a person who was born in Coll,an island off the scottish mainland, anyway scottish "humour " aside- your tips,especially the cold breath whistling helped enormously. i am keen to hear you play. do you have any vids online? and if so, do any of them feature my personal favourite whistle tunes? lastly, what make is your whistle? you didnt really play it for us. thanks for posting, my whistle playing just got better live well and prosper aw the best and sorry about the long rambling comment. regards ronnie

The dish soap and water solution works well in both plastic whistles and recorders and, as you rightly say, best avoided in wooden ones. I have been using this method for a long time and also with plastic reeds in musical instruments such as crumhorns. I have experienced for a long time that, if once wet with the solution the air duct of the whistle, recorder or reed is left to dry, for about a day, a patina forms which avoids clogging them for a long time and clearly, it must be repeated every now and then; in this case I would recommend a slightly higher concentration of soap, about 1/10 - 1/20.

My new Killarney clogs quite easily but I have discovered a trick. When I take a breath I draw in sharply through the mouthpiece like sucking a straw. A bit gross but works well and you don't have to stop playing!

In elementary school we learned that if you hold your recorder mouthpiece in your armpit while you’re not playing it’ll keep it warmed up, I suppose the same goes for tin whistles. But you probably want to have sleeves for this cause that could get a little gross if your mouthpiece is all sweaty...

I'm not a really wet whistler, but I do find that when I'm playing really fast songs (particular fast songs with second octave notes) that a lot of spit builds up in the mouthpiece. Sometimes I have to give the whistle a few sharp flicks during instrumental breaks to clear it. I'll have to try a few of these tips. Thanks for the great video.

I used to use a pipe cleaning. Like the craft ones to clean or unclog my whistle and it kinda worked a bit. I'll be sure to use some of these tricks in the future.

Great tips, but I have to say, there is no way you can change the temperature of the air you are breathing out, except perhaps to change the temperature of the air you are breathing in. It is physics. A more vigorous stream of air, as with pursed lips, cools your hand more effectively and feels cooler, but the air is the same temperature as it was in a soft breath. That is how fans work...they move a greater volume of air across your skin at a higher speed, increasing evaporation and convection and cooling your skin, but they do not change the temperature of the air being blown. :) However, the volume of the air moving through the whistle does effect how much moisture accumulates...as increased air volume and speed increase evaporation...so your whistle stays dryer. That is really what is going on with the pursed lipped breathing. Sorry, I just can’t help myself sometimes. :)

To avoid clogging you may also address liquids or foods used just before playing. For example, public speakers avoid drinking milk just before speaking.

After watching your video, I tried holding the whistle up higher and more towards the corner on my mouth, and it seems to help! I'll keep going with that, and see how I get on, as it would be a great shame to forgo the whistle at gigs etc. I've also subbed, and I'll check out more of your videos. Cheers! ☘

Great advice! I'm not a particularly wet whistler but when I first got my whistle I drank a lot of water right before I started playing. It was dripping a few seconds later. Oops :D

Today I learned wheat bags exist, and people heat them! I find playing straight out with a warm whistle solves most of my issues. A short beaked whistles (e.g. Susato) prevents me from putting it farther back in my mouth where more moisture is available. My Oak has a long beak and it's easy to forget.

You can't actually change the temperature of the air only the speed. The reason it feels cooler on your hand is because the fast stream of air carries the cool surrounding air along with it. When your lips are sealed around the mouthpiece the air doesn't mix with the surrounding air regardless of the speed. The speed of the air will simply push water droplets through and out of the mouthpiece through pressure.

actually higher pressure does not mean lower temperature. It only feels like that because of the other air (that was not in your body) that gets moved by your blowing. Try this: blow into your hands that form a tube and touch your mouth: Now the faster you blow the hotter it gets because there is no outside air that gets moved and instead when blowing stronger you push more warm air through your hand which will make your hand warmer than blowing less strong. But thats just from a blowing point of view maybe it actually works on a whistle very well. Anyway very good video love it

I wonder if I should soak it in soapy water and rinse it again in clean water. And is that less condensation when you blow the whistle? I also wonder if I should apply toothpaste and then rinse it again. And is this also less condensation when you blow the whistle?

I mostly only clog when I play low whistle - I think the aluminum body of mine is hard to keep up to temperature. I'll have to see if I can find a really long heat pack! 😂

Hi Bonny lass . I can’t get through a tune on mk low F without it clogging up . I have a high C with plastic mouth piece which will play for a long time without clogging. Do you think some whistles. are more prone to clogging? Regards , Bill .

So is this what happens when I cant get a crisp and clean note? Too much moisture in the flute? I play my plastic Dixon Low D and after awhile it will not play a note very well.But If I take a hard breath in with the flute, it will then continue to play clean and crisp, like I cleared the pipe with my breath

Tip number 2 seems strange to me because I assume that the temperature of the air in lungs is equal, blown fast or slowly, because it comes from the same place, the comparison you are doing about blowing at your hand is fallacious because of venturi effect, basically when you blow fast, air around your mouth get propelled foreward, that's why you feel it colder, because fundamentally the air in your lungs get mixed with the outside air. you can easily test it by making a funnel with your hand and blowing fast to a mirror (you have to be very close to it, almost attached) and then blow fast without the funnel. Finally what I want to say is that the temperature of the flute does not depend on how fast you are blowing, and I suppose that blowing fast get the flute near to the temperature of lungs air faster than if it is blown slower. I hope my english is understandable, because it's not my first language.
