I've been collecting dolls basically my whole life. I'm in my 50s and still there are occasionally dolls that will make me second-guess myself. I tend to stay with middle-of-the-road German and French bisques, with a few modest French fashions, and in the past decade I've seen mold numbers and even body styles (true antiques) that I never saw when I first started collecting. There really is a steep learning curve in doll collecting. Still the hobby has come a LONG way in terms of our knowledge and in striving for greater authenticity in costuming.

I collect much more recent dolls (from the 80s & 90s) but this was so interesting. Thank you for sharing your lovely dolls! I love their character & expressions! 💖

I’ve got a 24” porcelain doll made by Donna Rubert, I purchased her from the antique shop in my hometown but I purchased her because she felt lonely and sad, people ignored her. I know that sounds crazy

even Theriaults have been fooled. I remember a very early wooden doll that sold for a small fortune and later the artist herself recognized the doll she had created! I mean this doll sold for a lot - At least 25,000 may have been way more (just a guess from memory) was of course amazingly preserved! from what I know the artist contacted Theriaults and told them and they no doubt contacted the buyer. I wonder how they worked that one out.

These dolls must have been very top quality back when the originals were new...the quality of even these reproductions are beautiful to me. Like you said in the beginning...It would be one thing if they were sold for a lower price, instead of passing for the very high end versions.

I always. can tell them apart. simply is that, the antique one always have same oval shape face and typical eurocentric facial features, which was a beauty standard of those day - the type of face I would call " a young version of Queen Catherine of Prussia. in the same time the antique dolls tend to look more like robot without life since those days these dolls were mean to be a toy for kid. So they are giving an expression of being a real doll toy. Unlike a fake modern dolls are always come in different type of face and are slightly exotic with facial features that people like nowadays. For example, thick lips, big Chinese cheekbone, board nose or wide set eye etc. They are also look more realistic close to human than to the antique doll because of more advance in technique, better tools, materials and better colour etc. The modern doll makers are also like to make doll to look beautiful as possible, these dolls are handmade not from the factory like antique doll. Overally modern doll or fake doll are look more lively, fresh and realistic and lesser creepy compare to the real antique doll.

I bought a Peter Playpal reproduction. I bought him from a reputable small seller, he came with an Ashton Drake tag, and I believe he was released in 1980 (supposedly the time when the series was revived) as opposed to the earlier, original 1960 release. Would he be considered not authentic, or simply a re-issue?

What I do, that's useful for studying is just go to eBay. Just look at the varies dolls for sale. Look at the repro ones and compare them to the real ones. The eyebrows are the biggest giveaway. Plus there that certain something that just lacking in most repros. There's a lot of sites to go to for studying dolls. I have a few repros in my collections. They're actually done fairly well. One of them is a beautiful Bru. But when you compare them to genuine dolls. The bisque just doesn't look the same. There's a newness about them. I'm also a coin collector, so I have 2 hobbies with fakes to watch out for. LOL

I have a doll that I can't find any details on she belonged to my friends grandma and when she died I inherited the doll I was told she's a Holocaust doll and has markings on back of her head K🔯R (or R🔯R) under that it says Simon × Halbig then under that it says 117 she's very heavy, she has porcelain legs and arms she's in a black dress with red curly hair and she's 36-38" tall. I'm sorry but this did not meet my expectations and is probably for a much more advanced audience than myself. So many of your examples were simply spoken about rather than actually shown side by side. It is one thing to just say "look at the color and feel the weight" and another to actually compare colors and weights (and other details). There has to be more than just a certain Je ne sais quoi about telling fakes from the real. Sorry if this sounds impolite, not meant to be.
