Another tip to make your life easier. On those 10 gallon batches, as Beermeister said, It is easy to split it into multiple bags, use what I call DBIAB - Double Brew In A Bag! It is a simple 2-bag setup (with or without) some stainless 1/8" welding rod or wooden dowel over the top to clip on to. Or use Trent's idea of just winding both bags & using 1 big clip. Makes bag extraction a breeze, no pulleys, block and tackle, engine hoists or extra buddies needed!

I have 2 720 watt drum heaters that attach to the outside of my kettle for a total of 1440 watts. Plus I use an 1800 watt induction plate. The silicone drum heaters are available at Mcmaster Carr they have adhesive on them and cost around $100 each. They work very well, I dont use a thermostat. I dont have 220v hookup so this is a great alternative. I use 2 separate 120v circuits.

Those are some really good tips! Ive been brewing in a bag for the last three years or so the gloves help a lot! But I just put the grain bag in a spare bucket that I keep on hand on brew day and use my stir paddle to press on the bag to get a little extra wort. Also for temp, I try and watch it like a hawk, I do relight the burner for a quick min or two after lifting the bag just slightly and stirring a lot real fast - But this is something that I think you build up a feel for after awhile. Cheers BRAJ!

I brew in my kitchen so I have very limited space above my stove (microwave) so I have to hold the bag straight out about shoulder height which can be pretty brutal if the water doesn't drain quick enough. I double bag it. I have an old cheap 600 micron bag on the inside and a 200 micron bag on the outside. When I pull up the inside bag, the water flows through the 600 micron pretty easily and picks up all midsize to large particles so I don't have to hold it straight out for a long time and wreck my shoulders. Then the 200 micron second bag picks up a lot of the little stuff and dust for a clean wort. At first I just used the 200 micron and the bag took forever to drain. Holding the grain and water straight out until it drained enough to not spill was brutal.

When you use cheap square grain bags, find the bottom corners and push them in before lifting it completely out. That way liquid wont dump out the sides but straight down instead.

I found a 14" "Chinese" colander for like $10 that perfectly fits my BruBuilt kettle and is flat on bottom. It sits on the rim of the kettle perfectly and the flat bottom is near the 7.5 gallon mark so it's always above the pre-boil liquid. Since it sits down into the kettle and is bowl shaped, no concerns with any spillage.

Two layers of that cheap foil-foam insulation they make for water heaters keeps my brew pot AT mash temp for an hour. Two layers wrapped around the pot, and two on the lid always works for me. Wrap it and forget it. But don't forget to peel off the insulation before you fire up the stove for the boil. That foil wrap catches fire pretty quick.

@@zebraloser they are super heavy and awkward. Mine has a harness with handles but still when you lift it and the beer tilts to one side, it likes to tip the whole thing over. I bottle my homebrew from a bucket with a spigot and priming sugar but im tempting to ferment in the bucket with the spigot and bottle straight out of that and use those sugar tablets to carbonate. Alot less 02 that way too. Glass is fun to watch the fermentation process but that's about it once the glamor wears off
