Thank youuuuu! This is a gold mine! I'm making my own short animated film and teaching myself everything (and I've never done it before!) I've already got the script and storyboards (one year), and once I get the voice acting from my friends, I'm gonna begin teaching myself Grease Pencil! This is exactly the stuff I want to make! I know it'll be a long road but rather than letting myself be intimidated, I'm feeling motivated and excited!!! :D

Please do you have any ideas how he separated the frame layers before importing them to blender ?, for example, I would use illustrator to separate layers before plugging the file in adobe after effects to parallax. What software do you use in separating the frame layers before plugging them in blender?

I really enjoy the GP content coming out as more time passes. Blender is amazing for giving artists the opportunity to have a completely free tool. Here's to hoping that in a few years time GP will have completely closed the gap to its subscription-based competitors when it comes to 2D workflow and features.

love your blender related content. Already in this video I have learnt grease pencil closes gaps and you can add tints to the material. I know it sounds small but its extremely helpful for me. Can't wait for part 2 :D

When isolating a layer (collection, or object) to draw on, instead of clicking the eye icon on each layer you want to turn of, you can CTRL+LCLICK the eye-icon on the layer you want to see, and all the others will be turned off. Then you can CTRL+LCLICK again to put back to the original state. Much faster, especially when you have hundreds of layers (collections).

Thank you for this. I am a Hollow Knight fan. Just one thing, if anyone gets confused at 27:00 how to make the dark rock go behind the light rock on the same layer, and without masks, there is an option next to automerge to draw strokes behind other strokes.

Thanks for the tutorial. I've used Blender for 5+ years but rarely ever touch the grease pencil. Just a quick tip... If you accidently bring an image in that is not flat (like you color palette), you can select it and use ALT G and ALT R to clear location and rotation. You can then just rotate it around the proper axis (usually X) to make it face forward.

Just started watching, there is an awful lot of setup before you even start drawing. I was excited by what Grease pencil can do but it just seems very laborious. I can achieve the same scene with much less complexity in 10 steps in Adobe animate or Moho. It's interesting but not as simple as I'd hoped. Maybe I need to give it more time, but so far I'm not getting the GP hype nor why I would use this in my workflow.

Thought I'd ring in. If you are having issues with the tint brush step (I sure was), for me it was because my viewport shading was set to "solid", not "material preview". One way to change this is to press "z", then move your mouse over "material preview". Hope this helps someone.

Thanks so much ! Full of usefull informations and still, kept compact. It gives a good starting workflow - I'm not experienced enough to tell how good it is, but I know it's enough so I can start and have a lot of fun. Didn't really know how to start GP properly (my layers were spread all over my workspace, my dawings were in 3D, ...). Now, with just a short video I can really enjoy it. Very cool :)

I'm gonna leave some comments here tracking my journey through this tut (possibly helpful tips too) (currently at 11:49) Godsend advice outside of this was adding shortcuts in keymaps under preferences to toggle 3 button mouse - this is because at some point if I wanted to use Boundary Strokes could (I've also made myself a cheat sheet as I go through the tut so I can refer back to it if I forgot how to do something) Also it is helpful repeating steps as it makes me remember shortcuts more Unfortunately the flick shortcut doesn't work for me so for now I just use the top right view or go to view and select from there Thank you very much so far, the active smoothing tip is awesome and I forgot about it from other tutorials Also the cursor stuff is weird but the explanation helped with what would probably have been headaches for me ~Theres a weird bug at 16:46 where if I click on that image the properties dont get updated - instead it shows me the properties of the selection tool itself :/ really annoying if I want to change the opacity - I got it right once but not again :| (version 3.5.1)~ nvm im dumb

So Cool ! I'm using blender to draw out schematics for machines. Prototyping inventions !! It's just so much quicker and cooler to jot ideas caz the cad programs take serious time to draw ANYTHING. Plus you have to know the size of everything before you can draw anything. Blender is really useful for this caz I can go really quick and find out if my ideas are real and not just imaginary. Thanks for this tutorial. I've watched a ton in the past 3 years. This was good. Straight to the point, NOT treating beginners like numb-skulls. Good pace. I learned a couple things even though I've seen this stuff a million times. My next steps/ the reason I'm seeking tuts right now is to find good ways to make things move. To be able to modify/adjust drawings without having to redraw everything. Specifically I'm drawing pumps which move liquids. I want to move the pump internals and also the liquid as it flows... Excited for part 2 wow, the way your scene looks when the camera rolls through is REALLY Fkn COOL . It looks amazing. I can imagine how epic it could be if u put ur heart nd soul into it :) Cheers
