Nice one, this was the test which most others missed. too many previous tests focus only on the ability to seal the holes. I will save you the effort of testing Cafe latex ( I have used it for over a year but its not very good. It is ineffective in sealing a 2-3mm edge of tread hole during a race, plus it dries out completely within the tyre in 3-5 days. its also really hard to remove from the inside of the tyre after it has dried. Hardly any reviews test the sealants after a week of riding+ the bike being stationary, by which time many of the options available look like they will have become solid, often in one area of the tyre they are then ineffective.

I have a set of tires i always used stans inside. by drying up it made a thin latex like skin inside the tire and believe it or not, it still does seal all the holes (there are many) and presumably even new ones because i did not renew it since last summer, there is no liquid left inside the tires and they still dont need to be pumped very often. its perfect. i do however carry a small bottle of fresh sealant in case i get a bigger non sealing puncture to top it up.

Hello Danny, I take it that is your name. Anyways, you mentioned that you have converted non-tubeless tires to tubeless using Stans sealant. Unfortunately doing so is extremely dangerous as the tire can suffer catastrophic failure, causing injury or death. For 20 years I developed bike tires and tire making machinery for major Asian brands. I did a lot of tubeless testing. You see tubeless tires have a layer of tube rubber inside to hold air better and seals the more porous tire carcass rubber. The tube rubber also prevents any type of sealant from permeating into the more porous carcass rubber. What happens is that in time the porous rubber begins to breakdown and becomes more porous usually down the center making it easy for the sealant to permeate thru the rubber. This permeation then begins to accelerate and damage the tire carcass right down the middle of the tire. At some point, the sealant reaches the cords and the cords act as a drinking straw making the center of the tire soggy and very weak. Finally and usually at high speed, the tire rips wide open at the center usually with a 6" ~ 9" inch gaping tear. I would advise not to mention this kind of practice.

@georgesrisomsak9650
@georgesrisomsak9650 2 жыл бұрын
@@soulboken4670 no. All tires have a life, and it is by time. Rubber naturally deteriorates being ridden or not. Even if they sit there in controlled conditions. If you maintain and keep fresh tires, this method is likely just fine. However, I never realized the "dry" nature of the actual cords themselves would soak up the fluid. May do that when having a puncture, causing imbalance, and a weak spot. I am planning on converting to tubeless this weekend for both my wife's bike and mine. Going to try dry first, and see how far out we can get and probably have a flat! Lol! I hate the idea of fluid in the tires, and as a mechanic, with viscous loss as it rotates, and imbalance, not to mention, rotating, viscous, drag generating weight. Guess these sealants are used widely for a reason, I'll find out the hard way likely. Think I'm going with the Stan's sealant myself, if I must. I'll report back either way.

I dont think the cans are for tubeless tyres!.they are made for emergency and for inner tubes.....and i can tell you that they do work, even the cheaper ones!....they will get you home but you might have to add some air the next day.......but they last!.......because when the foam is sprayed into the inner tube and it hits the outer tube, it creates a seal!

I was using Slime for a while until I run out of it. It was good. Never had an issue. Since 2 years Im running Stans (the regular one not Race) and have to say that its brilliant. Ive taken off a tyre after over 1.5 years of usage to check if there is still something inside as Stans says it evaporates and needs to be refiled after 6months however there was still liquid inside. Id say 30% was left yet it had nearly same density as new. Nearly no residue on the tyre. Seals great and Ill stick to it - few days ago Ive tubelessed my road bike as well (whether wheels - Fulcrum - nor tyres - Schwalbe city smthng... are tubeless ready) and theyr holding 6.5Bar no hassle :)

The video is a good start showing which products stop air flow from a puncture. The test would be riding on the repaired tire over various terrains for 90 minutes. Will any of these sealants perform at 120 psi? Who doesn't carry a spare tire or tube? I carry "Flex Seal" tape for lager repairs, and it works to repair 'Slime" filled tubes. The "Flex Seal" is a peel and stick modified bitumen. The surface in need of repair should be cleaned first Vittoria's new "Air Liner" combined with select sealants should be a winner.

Well, I was the one who hates dealing with this kind of mass(and is very tired to do all kind of this thing). But one time I was riding with my friends and we decided to take a short cut back home, then realized half of the short cut are gravel road (actual loose gravel), but we were tired and don't want to go back and take the pavement. Glad that I switch to tubeless (it take me 3 tries and wasted a pair of tubeless ready strips and a roll of tapes. And I used 3 days to complete the switch...) lower tire pressure make the ride so comfortable and more traction on gravel. also, I ride faster because of the confidence that the sealants in my tire.

Great Vid. I have road tubeless and have been trying to figure out the best brand to use. So far I've settled on mixing stans no tubes (non-race) and slime's tube sealant (not the STR version). This makes about the same consistency as the slime STR and during my punctures at around 80PSI it usually only makes 1-2 revolutions of the wheel before completely sealing. With your vid, I might try my hands on the race version of stans or the STR version of slime at a later time.

Interesting test. I came upon a brand called OKO, with a X Treme product intended for tubes. I hear that tubeless sealants are not as effective in tubes, but this one reported to seal punctures up to 7mm, compared to 4mm for other respected brands. Was thinking tube + sealant would be the best option for someone who wanted less flats, but least hassle, who didn't mind extra weight (and rolling resistance).

You should of bounced the wheel more aggressively with the hole down you have to pretty much smack it against pavement to get all the particles to come together rapidly and efficiently you could allways add grounded up black pepper, glitter or nylon fibers between 1/8"-1/4" long to help seal those bigger punctures most tyres have nylon as one of the layers or in the compound mixes. I've also used Elmer's glue mixed with a bit of rubber cement and nylon and a tiny bit of rice vinegar to make it a bit thinner of a mix worked great as far as I can tell I never got stuck I never noticed any punctures except one morning I had to ass about 8 or 9 psi that I randomly lost the tire was still sealed properly no leak after inflation. Great video great channel good luck on your many adventures with and on mtb's

Great test - but I think you you did the aerosol puncture repair products a dis-service. These are for emergency and you DO NOT remove the thorn, nail etc and then I think you'll find they work (maybe not a cut though). They are a get-you-home product then at home you remove the nail. I've used Slime in Australia where thorns are a real issue and prefilled tubes would have numerous thorn punctures,, hardly lost any pressure and looked like a green spotted snake!

Will have to nip out to the workshop 'cos I can't remember the brand name (It ain't one of these ^^) of the industrial stuff we use, but of all the muck we've bought over the years, only this stuff was reliable - as in once added, unless the tyre was torn open, the sealant worked to hold pressure. It's aimed squarely at farm equipment, not consumer stuff - but it works. None of the usual "common" brands we tried worked. This stuff is also inexpensive.. I'll check the name. What stands out of this is that it contains millions of tiny strands, like fibers - which clog holes fast. Which is probably why it works. The liquid/chemical seal ones are all pish.

I have used "MagmaSeal" as it is supposed to work with punctures up to 6,8mm and last up to 2 years before drying. But it is literally a pain in the A** to get the right amount in to the tire. Especially after you have finished half the bottle for the first tire, it becomes a nightmare to force the rest out of the bottle for the second tire. Usually ~50ml is wasted because you just can't press more of it out. Had to Order a second bottle just to get some more into the second tire. Atleast now I have some of it on reserve in case I need some more.

Nice to finally see a positive review on the Finish Line sealant. I've been running it for months now with absolutely no problems at all. The problem people often make with it is that they are not putting nearly enough sealant in to the tyre so it doesn't work and then they go write a bad review on the internet and then the sealant gets a bad reputation :(

do you need to decrease air pressure when you use sealant. I am thinking since sealant uses volume of tube, less air would be needed, and thus less air pressure. do I still follow tire rating for air pressure or just use less air in general?
@kartace1
@kartace1 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t matter, the pressure will increase proportional to the amount of sealant because it effectively makes the cavity inside the tube smaller. Pressure is pressure and is determined by the size of the vessel not the contents. Just fill it to the recommended levels and don’t worry about the slime.
@boracay12

Yeah . Not so bright there buddy . It will have less air due to the sealant taking up space . And pump it to the pressure you had before . It just takes less pumping and air volume . But still needs to pumped to the correct amount of pressure.

When going tubeless, can I use my existing bike tire or do I have to buy special tires?

It depends on the tire and rime. most tires now are tubeless-ready but not all rimes. It should be written somewhere on the product.

Dear Trippin, here is what I wrote to Danny as a warning about the dangers of converting normal tire to tubeless...
