Game: Each room has coloured pads. If they are blue, none of the connecting rooms have traps. Green = 1, Yellow = 2, Purple = 3, and Red = 4. Traps that are activated upon opening a door are not counted. Literally everyone: I'm sure this red room will hold no traps on the other side of any of these doors.

For everyone who didn't catch it, the signs in each room point to whether there are traps in the adjacent rooms. Green means there is one room around the one you are in that has a trap(including the one you came). Yellow means there are 2 rooms, purple means 3 and red means all 4 rooms have traps(basically you are screwed). Blue just means that every room around the one you are in is safe(forgot to add that, luckily somebody in the comments below reminded me). You can also press O to bring up the map and left-click a room to add an orange/red/blue exclamation mark to mark a room about its content(now it is exactly like Minesweeper). Right-click removes it.

For any one curious about the NPCs: In the movies the game is based off of, The Cube series, they would most likely be old employees of the company that was building the cubes. I say old employees because (spoiler alert) if an employee betrayed the company they would be put through the cube to die, and if they some how managed to get out, they would be put through a process that made them mentally retarded and then they would be put back into the cube to die. I believe that's what the NPCs most likely are supposed to represent.
