Love the Metric measurements during this video. I was not expecting it, started doing a conversion from Imperial to Metric around the same time as i got my answer the Metric shows up, LOL. It's a bit like getting the answers to a test straight after you answer the questions.

Im sure someone will correct me but you can set a safe home position with a G130 Z(safe zone) X(safe zone) then send them to that position with a G30 U0 W0.

I thought the same thing! Surely you'd retract that turret to a better tool change position! Imagine swinging a U-drill into the side of the chuck?! lol!

Sandviks name for inserted drills. There are many other manufacturers out there all have their own names.

I run a HAAS DS30SSY, I think this DOOSAN can interpolate on the B axis (subspindle). HAAS you can only position and lock . Rather than using that as a rotary axis.

You just pointed out the reason for buying a Doosan instead of a HAAS. Nothing against HAAS but Doosan are just that bit better.

It’s nice to be able to interpolate on both spindles, makes not having much travel in the y axis less of a problem

You should consider multi tool turrets as well so you can maximize production.

First time I've seen somebody besides me using indexable drill to drill and bore however I don't use two offsets I write it all in the program for the drill

Great video , drills work for boring but can be tricky to break the chips up . does anybody have a direct post specific to this machine for Fusion 360 , i know you guys like to use mastercam now . Just bought one of these and i love fusion 360 , just dont like the thoughts of having to constantly edit the program it txt file to make it run right on the machine .

You guys act like everything you do is exceptional in the matching world, I hate to break the news but your vids are old school, I’ve been machining my whole life and have seen this stuff at least 15 years ago! Try cutting inconel 901 day after day, I see a lot of aluminum cutting in your shop, really nothing special to me and the veterans of maching

I’ve seen you touching on the shank of the tool. Could you help, when I’m touching off on a heidenhain tool setter, with a live tool in auto it spins the the tools up ccw. Will it hurt any of them, the probe or the tools?

The DMG NLX 2000/2500's have a quick detachable sub-side probe arm that attaches where the Doosan's parts catcher is located. They're quite handy and super accurate!!

This is problem for all similar Doosans, it seems that they have this old Puma 230 design and they just added the subspindle without adding or changing anything than software 😁 we have a Doosan Lynx220 (2 of them) and some more 2 turret Doosans, problem is the same on every machine.

Hai iam having doosan puma 2000sy i want to run both spindles like main spindle and sub spindle at a time but in individual rotation direction can it possible.... Its fanuc 18i control

On the doosan 2100sy (same only a little smaller than yours) i wrote a small macro so you never hit the jaws.. G10 L2 P1 Z[180.+#530] (set G54) This is metric and only for the chuck I have installed the 180 is 20mm off the jaw face (the clearance i need for my partoff tool) and at the start of my program I have eg #530=65.(part length). It just idiot proof (ish)

We did the same but with separate G602 code. Where you put the parameters in ( like height of the jaws, part lenght and so one) and there is no danger that the subspindle kisses the main 😁

Being the first part, this is how most people start. Fiddle and fiddle until you get it to run how you want it to. It’s not so important if you are only making one, but if it’s a production run I’m sure he would work the bugs out of it.

Since you are using the insert drill as a boring how did you orient the drill so the insert you are using for boring is on centerline in X?

These inserted drills typically have machined flats on them to orient the inserts perfectly inline with the x axis for boring. Now since there are usually 2 flats opposite of eachother, you do have to make sure you are orienting the correct way to ensure that the insert on the ouside edge of the drill is the one on the x+ side.

@@bradstubbs5708 I’ve typically seen them with the flats oriented 90 degrees from each other so you can choose to offset in either x or y axis. Never seen one with flats 180 degrees from each other

He’s right to say diameter, when you touch off to a tool on the probe you subtract the diameter of the tool. It’s an eighth inch from the center of the tool, but to the machine thats 1/4” on the diameter

Why would you use the drill as a boring bar? This way 1 insert will wear out a lot faster then the other insert Is this really just to save a 4 second tool change for a normal boring bar?

It’s a good stout bar that you don’t have to buy if you already have the drill. Also, a lot of times when working on both sides of a part you have to get creative as far as tools because you are limited in turret positions for tools. You don’t always have room in the turret to use the tools you want, sometimes you have to make do with what has to be in there. It’s probably not why they did it but I know I have to do that sometimes. I have a mazak 200msy with only 12 turret positions

Just a general thought about the lack of a fairly simple function that any CNC Lathe should have if it has a Sub Spindle. . You must admit if you buy a CNC Lathe with a Sub Spindle you would want to be able to Index. I know i would. 👍

It depends on your definition of “op”. It would be a 2 op job in a single spindle lathe since an operator would have to physically remove it & reset it in the same spindle for the second side. Since it’s a twin spindle lathe that is taken care of by the machine itself so a completed part comes out with only the initial placement by the operator- hence “1 op”.

It’s one program, and an untended part transfer. Put a piece of stock in, finished part comes out. How can you say that’s not a single setup?

From raw material to one completely finished work-piece in one machine with 2 chucks is single set-up. If you machine one side and then must change set-up again for finish work-piece, you have a double set-up.

Straighten your stock first then drill then finish. Its more important with bar fed hight spindle speeds to limit vibration ect...

If you have a pointed drill go for it. But with a flat faced one its better to have an even surface. So unless you are bar feeding with cutoff, i wouldnt do it. Unless the stock is flat ofc, but if u get the material cut off with a shitty saw it can be pretty uneven. i always prefer to drill a center hole if possible to save the insert a lot of wear, which it gets by facing off.
