broke my thumb when i was 22 coming off my motorcycle. after 3 weeks of dithering they finally decided to operate. The orthopaedic surgeon was Irish, she came in to do a pre -op consultation, spent a few seconds grinding my thumb around it's joint and then just exclaimed " aghh it's fooked isn't it".

It's almost like Simon needs to get himself into tough positions to win. I've never studied the French but it looks like you need to be able to handle a ton of pressure to be successful with that one.

Great show as always. Always wanting you to do well but the result is a by-product for me. Bortnyk in round 1 is always gonna be a kick in the nuts... I see Gotham held Grischuk to a draw. He's been playing well lately.

Yeah, England are dull and basic atm, but I think Southgate has ordered the players to take it easy in the group stage to stay fresh - he may also be concealing how we plan to actually play in the knock out stages - military lead time....

Gunina is a last name, whish is pronounced as Goonina with the emphasis on "oo". So it's ['goonina], not [gun'ina].

Only 40 minutes in but maybe that tea is too calming, you're playing so much slower than usual! You always seem to do well when you're fast and attacking

Simon for a knight's pawn you can use the philidor defence if you like, but keeping the rook on the back rank also works because the attacking king can never get around. The back rank defence. A GM really didn't know that? Then you can do something very funny after he pushes the pawn to the seventh rank, let's say your king is on b1 and his pawn is on b2 and his king is on b3, then his rook is on d3 and your rook is g1. Play Rg3 and for a second it looks like you gave a free rook and checkmate at the same time, but of course you did neither and instead the game is over because if he doesn't stalemate you win the pawn.

Ginger, you really need to work on your endgames. You'd be around 2700 online if your endgames were as good as your opening and middlegame.

I think one of the funny things with Simon is that his openings are just generally ok (he sometimes gets great positions), his middlegames are almost always brilliant(brings it back no matter what, amazing sacs galore), and then his endgames are so bleh
