Bobby has managed the absolute best of the best when it comes to pro wrestling. One of his best acquisitions was Rick Rude who came in from the NWA where he was tag champs with Raging Bull Manny Fernandez.
Find out from Heenan why he says Rude never wanted a manager and why the role of manager has been phased out in recent years.

I am glad Bobby Heenan got into the wrestling profession, he was such a professional at it and the wrestling world would not have been the same without him in it.

Even though he was too good for wrestling. He could have been a world class comedian with his sense of timing and delivery and could have been A LOT more famous, but he dedicated it all to wrestling and I hope most wrestling fans understand how lucky they were to have him.

I personally think Rude needed a manager for that something extra. In the NWA it was Paul Jones, In WWF it was Bobby Heenan, in WCW it was Paul E Dangerously.

Agreed. No heel (before or since) has got more heat from audiences than Rick Rude, circa 1987-94.

@@TheTruth-pl3mk I'd say only Ted Dibiase might have. But then Ted was SO GOOD, that eventually some people liked his character. Not too many people really liked Rude during his prime.

Poor Rick Rude. He mostly has a manager with him (from Percy Pringle to Bobby Heenan) when Rick is a solid talker.

I think though, he and Heenan 'fit' together and the period they were together in WWE/then F was excellent, even if they didn't truly get along or Bobby only saw him as a business partner. It never showed, which is testament to their professionalism and talents. They looked great together and were natural heels. I think Rick would have been fine on his own, but with Heenan everything excellent was amplified.

Sure Rude could have done it on his own. BUT, with Bobby at his side, his act was even better. These two just complimented each other and it wouldn't have been the same without Heenan.

I saw an old vintage wrestling tape with Bobby Heenan as a wrestler. It was a tag team match that had Dick the Bruiser. Anyway, Heenan was easily the best performer, he sold and drew heat big time.

A heel manager in your corner is a bonus! Referee distractions or ankle trips to your opponent running off the ropes. All helpful.

It's a shame to hear Bobby didn't really get much from the situation with Rick. Before seeing this I always thought they got on really well, especially given how amazing and genuine their professional partnership appeared, but according to this, it was only business nothing more, sad 😢

Adrian Street had an ad for His wrestling school in the various magazines when I was a kid.I called Him one day and Miss Linda answered.Adrian and I had a conversation about My interest in becoming a wrestler I inquired about,perhaps,being a manager.I cant recall His verbatim response,but it was one that was indicative of how much He frowned upon the mere idea of managers. One neednt Anyone to get over if They are good enough. Hart,Cornette,Heenan,Dillon and Ellering could talk the fans into buying a ticket and very few were and are bestowed the ability to do that.The majority were just props that seemingly served no purpose other than to fill out the roster.

This was the genius of the brain. He could give character to wrestlers with none and he could amplify wrestlers with talent already.

Bobby paired with Rick was a great pairing that reminded me a lot of JJ being paired with Ric Flair. Neither Rick Rude or Ric Flair neccesarily needed Bobby or JJ as they had solid mic skills. But getting paired with Bobby and JJ helped elevate the level heel heat that they both received.

Rude had manager almost from start, definitely could see him feeling like he was held back. But in ring, he was solid. Brain definitely sounds humble & greatful in this interview. It was devastating to see him ostracized in late years, after surgeries. Just doing the conventions & signings. 2 Big stars talked about in tbis video..

My mom used to talk about Bobby. She was a waitress at a Hooks in Indianapolis and he went in all the time. He said he was going to be big one day. 😂

Other then Bad News Brown most of the heels had managers in the late 80's. And Heenan, Slick, Jimmy Hart and Mr.Fuji each had there own stable of wrestlers

In WCCW, Rude had Percival Pringle (a.k.a.: Paul Bearer) as a manager. They seemed to work well together.

What today's punks could learn from this cat when he was around. Those smart, old timers learned something + put it to use. Quite often it's the little things that cause more heat. I love how Bobby understood the business so much better than anyone + Vince was an idiot not to give Bobby the 'Book' (unless he did offer but Bobby refused it). He knew what popped + what didn't put Asses in the seats. Listen to what he said about the bits w/females. There's NO PAYOFF. The only thing you can do there is have the dame deck the heel - but how many times can you go there? It's like a 'Dusty Finish'

Bobby ELEVATED EVERYONE he worked with. Working with Bobby was always an honor. The man knew wrestling in and out. Why would you NOT want to work with him? The most over figure in wrestling, heel or face worked with Bobby, ... Andre the Giant was a Bobby guy and Bobby ALWAYS made his guys look better and be better

Rude had a manager practically his entire career. lol in WCW, he had Madusa AND Heyman. Did he need them? Probably not, but every one of them enhanced him. Paul Jones, Pringle, Heenan. Heyman. Madusa.

Wow this makes me feel a little sad and nostalgic when Bobby brought up the old Marigold Gardens in Chicago. My dad lived right by it and went to all the matches in the 50's and 60's just like Bobby. My dad is long passed now but Marigold Gardens is about a mile away from Wrigley Field where my dad also went all the time to see the Cubs play. My uncle (long gone) worked at the ticket gate and let my dad sneak in for free at the Cub games. *Marigold Gardens* haven't heard that in at least 40 years. Glad i watched this video

I’ve long thought Rude was the most underrated wrestler of that era … and the absolute best heel … I think if Vince had put the strap on him he might have been an all-time great … perhaps it could have been Bobby’s pinnacle … but then what do I know I’m just sitting here drinking and smoking.

Although Rick could carry his own on the mic it was much better because of the Chippendale angle to have Bobby just like you're at a club doing the MC work! Get the acts over let them do little parts of their schtick to let them exude their persona... You have showtime! There is Bobby then there's everybody else 😇💯👌

I thought Rude andl Bobby were a great match. They complimented each other because they were both talkers. When he got Bobby on his side it elevated Rude a lot, so it worked!

What modern promoters don't get is that in addition to speaking for poor promo people, it's a way heels can win without taking heat from babyfaces, AND sometimes prolong money feuds by dangling a match by "weasel-suit match" type stipulations.

He always had a manager everywhere he went: Hart in Memphis, Pringle in WCCW, Jones in Crockett Promotion, Bobby in WWF, Heyman in WCW....so Bobby wasn't his first manager, having one was always a part of Rude's gimmick.

You take Heenan out of the Rude equation, his stories with Warrior, Piper, and Orndoff don't go anywhere. Rude fans will disagree but he needed something to put him over the top as a heel. He was great in the ring, but he was like Jake Roberts to me, needed something else to get over. Jake had the snake and the ddt to get attention, Rude had Heenan and the body. Vince was correct.

Rude wasn't the type of wrestler who needed a manager to talk for him. He was like top 10-15% on the mic. Go manage King Kong Bundy, One Man Gang, Earthquake, etc.

Rude was always given a manager: Jimmy Hart in Memphis, Pringle in WCCW, Paul Jones in Crockett Promotion, Bobby in WWF, Heyman in WCW....it was basically part of his character to have a manager with him, managers are not only there to talk, they can be more than mouthpieces.

People want TNA, so bring back Baywatch. Putting Rick Rude with Heenan was just a clever way to make him a villain with no build up. It worked but it also worked against him. It made nobody want to see him win. That is like a death sentence if you want to win, and while he did get over and even gain the gold from time to time it still sucked. It was always short lived glory that left him complaining. It was a guilt by association that he would never live down. A real gyp deal that made him feel screwed coming out the gate. He was very keenly aware of this, mostly because everyone told him this would happen. Opportunities that he would have been a better man to have been given went to someone else time and again for this reason. I would have been feeling pissed off too. I mean remember the no ring ability Warrior? Need I say more?

Ellering really did manage the road warriors, administratively. Maybe a few others did here and there, but for the most part, it was a work.

Rude was the ONLY reason I ever watched wrestling. It was sort of like when I would watch The Three Stooges…if Curly wasn’t on the episode, I wouldn’t bother… Heenan was a great manager, and they were a good pair.
