Ernesto Antonio "Tito" Puente, Jr. (April 20, 1923-June 1, 2000) was an American musician, songwriter, record producer and bandleader. The son of Ernest and Felicia Puente, native Puerto Ricans living in New York City's Spanish Harlem, Puente is often credited as The Musical Pope, El Rey de los Timbales (The King of the Timbales) and The King of Latin Music. He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions that endured over a 50-year career. He and his music appear in many films such as «The Mambo Kings and Fernando Trueba's Calle 54». He guest-starred on several television shows, including Sesame Street and The Simpsons two-part episode «Who Shot Mr. Burns?». His most famous song is «Oye Como Va».

I heard Tito Puente perform in Brentwood Long Island New York, I suppose not too many years before he died. He had a house in Brentwood and I read in one of the local papers I think that he gave a yearly free concert in a Brentwood park, and a concert was coming up soon, so, since I was living nearby, I don't remember if if was in Shirley LI, NY or Ronkonkoma NY (Ronkonkoma buts up against Brentwood) I rushed to see, hear him. Wonderful wonderful experience. Huge mass of people attending the performance. Brentwood is a a largely inhabited by people of Latin American origin, mostly middle-class appearing housing developments. At one time I worked in an autoglass distribution company located in Brentwood. It was Jewish-owned, but every single employee in my department was Hispanic except me. However they were all bilingual and I got along with everybody. And of course I learned a little Spanish. Ever since I was 2 years old, listing to the AM radio in New York City, in 1950, I've loved Latin music and Tito was wonderful.

El predominante factor musical "boricua" Desde inicios de los 1930's los boricuas dominaban el escenario musical y eran los dueños de la mayoría de la orquestas de Nueva York. A partir de 1955 ese control se consolidaría ya que músicos que tocaron en alguna que otra orquesta cubana, como Tito Rodríguez, Tito Puente, Charle Palmieri, Ray Barreto entre otros, ahora eran los dueños de sus propias orquestas. En el Palladium, principal centro musical bailable de la ciudad estaban la orquestas de los boricuas Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez y la orquesta del cubano Frank "Machito" Grillo, que estaba irónicamente constituida principalmente por músicos boricuas. Su estilo musical obedecía a un tipo de Mambo-Jazz con Swing, mas norteamericano que caribeño y que se conoció como Latin Jazz.[ver] Por otro lado tenemos a la sensación de Puerto Rico, Cortijo y su Combo con Ismael Rivera, "El Sonero Mayor" con un estilo guarachero, que unía las tradiciones borincanas de la Bomba, Plena, Seises, siendo el mas auténtico y caribeño. Claro en Nueva York, habían otras agrupaciones musicales mas tradicionales cuya referencia era las charangas o el son montuno, pero siempre construida mayoritariamente por boricuas. Ya allí, se estaban gestando y cocinando unos cambios musicales que pasarían por el Cha cha cha, Mambo jazz, Charanga, Pachanga, Bogaloo hasta llegar así a la Salsa. Martin Quñones,Rafael Cortijo,Kito Vèlez,Mario Cora,Voz Falsete,Eddie Pèrez,Roberto Roena,Sammy Ayala y vocalizando el Sonero Mayor Ismael MAELO Rivera Rafael Cortijo y su Combo con Ismael Rivera 1956, llegó a Nueva York con Guarachas y Ritmos Afroboricuas Entre los años 1960 y 1969 personajes como, Charlie Palmieri, Pete Rodríguez, Willie Colón con Héctor Lavoe, Richie Ray con Bobby Cruz, Rafael Ithier con El Gran Combo, Louie Ramírez, Bobby Valentín con Frankie Hernández, Tommy Olivencia con Chamaco Ramírez, Rafael Cortijo y su Bonche, Ray Barreto con Adalberto Santiago, Tito Puente, Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound, Willie Rosario con Chamaco Rivera, Ismael Rivera y los Cachimbos, Quique Lucca y La Sonora Ponceña, Eddie Palmieri con Ismael Quintana entre otros dueños de estas emergentes agrupaciones musicales y cantantes, estaban puertorriqueñizando el nuevo sonido musical, al que se le incluyó su folclor y las letras de sus mejores compositores como, Tite Curet, Rafael Hernández, Pedro Flores, y Bobby Capó entre otros.... Solo el dominicano Johnny Pacheco con el boricua Pete "Conde" Rodríguez, los cubanos Justo Betancourt, Héctor Casanova, Celia Crúz, o el judio americano, Larry Harlow, se mantuvieron tocando con influencias primordialmente cubanas dentro del grupo de la Fania. Hubo otros grupos o cantantes ajenos a la Fania, pero sin mayor trascendencia discográfica. Habían entonces (3) tres variantes salseras, el estilo puertorriqueño de Nueva York, el estilo autóctono puertorriqueño de la Isla y el estilo cubano de Pacheco y Harlow en Nueva York, esto ocurría en unos momentos en que aún no se definía con claridad su identidad sonora. Veamos que nos puede decir Rubén Blades al respecto -Desde joven en Panamá, antes de llegar a Estados Unidos, note una diferencia entre las producciones de "salsa" hechas en New York y las de Puerto Rico. En New York, aun tratándose de músicos Boricuas, o sus descendientes, el sonido de cada producción reflejaba dos posibilidades: (1) por un lado, la influencia del Jazz norteamericano, o por el otro, la copia de temas de letra, estilos, estructuras y guajeos de piano que reafirmaban la influencia de Cuba.- (2) En cambio, en Puerto Rico, las Orquestas como La Sonora Ponceña, planteaban un argumento mucho mas criollo, con temas profundamente identificados con la realidad de su medio, por ejemplo: "Pio-Pio", imposibles de ser hechos en New York; Tommy Olivencia con "Plante Bandera", o Willie Rosario, Roberto Roena y el propio Papo Lucca, a pesar de incorporar sonoridades y giros de jazz newyorquinos a sus arreglos, crearon un estilo muy puertorriqueño que los distinguió siempre del sonido de New York. Para mi fue siempre claro el que me encontraba antes dos distintas perspectivas de música, de actitudes, de intenciones, de manifestación cultural y política.-

Well Puerto Rico is part of the United States and Puerto Ricans are free to move from PR to any other part of the US, so if they do, I would call them just people who moved!

I play drum kit, mostly. But over the years I’ve been playing, I’ve become interested in world percussion as well. Congas, bongos, djembe, cajon, and now timbales!! Still, with all the liberals taking over the country, I think that the most insulting thing that they could do would be to accuse a drummer/percussionist of bringing “cultural appropriation” even though all he was doing was playing music. That, to me, would be the most insulting, disgusting, disrespectful thing that liberals could ever do to a musician. Say someone is giving a phenomenal performance on the drums, and then he switches to percussion instruments, and then a liberal shuts down the show, turns out all the sound and the lights, and then gets onstage and starts spewing lies and insults to the person performing. And then that liberal tells him that he should “do the right thing” and quit, so that the people who created all of the music and instruments could feel better about themselves. And something else that’d be insulting would be all the liberals calling you racist for something that you never said or did. And yet, worse than that, the media singles you out just for even having a drum collection of djembes, congas, bongos, cajons, and timbales. That’d be the most hurtful thing to ever happen to anyone, especially a musician.

While in Puerto Rico, the same week he was supposed to be playing with LA SINFÓNICA DE PUERTO RICO I saw an interview with him in which among other things he mentioned that his mother's name was "ERCIDIA" not "Felicia" and that she was from San Germán. Was he wrong when identifying his mom? Btw, her last name was Ortiz. Ercidia Ortiz..
