*** For those who have not noticed the previous comments about the accuracy in the video:
This video was made as a quick guide for one of my classes about what a titration is and it wasn't meant to be an exact representation since that would have taken longer and I wanted to get to the end point faster so they could see what happens. I explained to them that it would need to be done more accurately if they were ever to do one themselves. ***
----------
A titration experiment is used to calculate an unknown concentration of acid (or alkali) using a neutralisation reaction.
In this titration an alkali (with a known concentration) is carefully added to the acid (of unknown concentration) using a burette. The volume of alkali used in the experiment is needed in order to perform a calculation to work out the concentration of the acid.
The acid used in this titration is hydrochloric acid (HCl, 25ml volume, unknown concentration) and the alkali used is sodium hydroxide (NaOH, 0.1M concentration).
-----
Useful equations to calculate the unknown concentration of acid:
number of moles = concentration x volume
concentration = number of moles ÷ volume
Concentration is measured in moles per litre (moldm-3)
Volume is measured in litres (decimetre cubed: dm3)
-----
The equation for this reaction is:
hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide ---- sodium chloride + water
HCl + NaOH ---- NaCl + H2O
(using subscript for the 2 in H2O)

You're welcome! ...Finally, someone who actually reads the comments to realise it was an approximate method simply to show what a titration is and not to point out to me the same thing many people before them have written! :)

@Ariel Patterson Vol of NaOH: 25.4 cm3 (ml) = 0.0254 dm3 (litres) #moles NaOH = conc x vol = 0.1 x 0.0254 = 0.00254 This is a 1:1 ratio of moles, NaOH:HCl so 0.00254 is used for #moles HCl Conc HCl = #moles ÷ volume = 0.00254 ÷ 0.025 = 0.1016 M *I know the experiment would need to be repeated so that the concentration of NaOH is found more accurately but based on this experiment here is the calculation.

@d3sire100 You are correct about the less-than-accurate drops! This video was made as a quick guide for one of my classes about what a titration is and it wasn't meant to be an exact representation since that would have taken longer and I wanted to get to the end point faster so they could see what happens. I explained to them that it would need to be done more accurately if they were ever to do one themselves. The shade of pink of the phenolphthalein indicator is fine in this experiment.

@JenkinsonTarron You weren't to know of course but this video was aimed at my GCSE class (not A level) and just needed to give an overview of what a titration is. It wasn't intended for the students to accurately replicate a titration themselves. So don't be sad, I'm sure there are plently of titration videos on KZfaq that contain the required accuracy you desire :)

@Anonymous2094 The technician I filmed dropped alkali into the flask (containing acid and phenolphthalein indicator). When the alkali drop made contact with the indicator in the flask it caused the indicator to turn pink in response to the alkali hitting it...but once the alkali that was dropped into the flask spread through the rest of the liquid, it made the initial drop of alkali a lower pH (because it was mixing with the acid already in the flask) and so the pink colour turned to colourless.

You are correct about alkalis and this has been addressed in previous comments. Either way is fine for a titration though as it depends on which one (the acid or the alkali) is the unknown concentration. This decides which one goes into the burette.

@browngurl185 Phenolphthalein is colorless in acidic solution and turns pink in alkali. The way I did it was to put the acid in the conical flask (and so the phenolphthalein was colourless) and add alkali from the burette which would start to give the pink colour. You mentioned acid twice but if you got the opposite colours with the indicator then you must have had the alkali in the flask and added acid from the burette. You can do it either way around.

@paparaziandadnan Plus, it depends on which solution you are trying to calculate the concentration of. You always put the unknown conc. solution in the conical flask, and the known in the burette. This comes from a starting AS level student, so I think this is right. :)

I don't think the solution was titrated at " 25.5cm^3 , if you watch closely after the last drop the solution appears to be losing colour , i am sure he had swirled it once more the pink would have totally disappeared. But I understand that this is meant as a demonstration not for precision.

To just add to the comment that you agreed to, that the acid should go into the burette. The reason my Chemistry teacher gave 35 years ago was that the caustic soda damages the ground glass surfaces of the tap and so it will eventually seize up, making the burette useless.
