This mondaymoring I stared out the window with my first coffee and I asked myself if artists are egocentric. We always need to work alone and feel distracted by several influences or incentives.
I came upon the importance of art and wished that everyone would be able to experience beauty and emotion.

I don't have a voice that carries, and I don't like to scream. I found painting and music to express myself. Music is a universal language. When I go to music sessions, I find musician friends of all generations to share a good time without taboos and borders. Art is indeed important.

Nice one again. I liked listening to the problem solving/ improving of the house portrait. For me, winter is about beautiful moody skies. I miss day light too much to call it my favorite season but understand what you're getting at.

I don't think self centered would be a correct assumption. I feel that with artists we are probably more content to be alone to create our work. It takes time to figure out how to accomplish a piece. Fortunately we can have the time and still balance our lives. I enjoy how you present your videos with peaceful and thought provoking ideas. Have a wonderful Christmas Titus!

Yes, the last version of the housepainting looks very good. The space under the trees was drawing attention to it, it didn't connect with the sky. Somehow it felt you were so relieved to sign the oilpainting and finally get on painting the marching band. I wondered the same about being egocentric as an artist. It happens to everybody that does something passionately, it's about feeling in the flow.. it's like surfing or wakeboarding in the ocean, it asks for balance, focus and waiting for the right wave, trying to ride as long as possible. And when there's no wind you rest on the beach with family or friends. As long as there is full attention for them as well it's perfect. If you show as an example to your kids how to surf on the waves of passion, they learn to do the same and they see a happy caring father, it's a win-win situation. Vrolijk kerstfeest!

I don't think of artists as being simply egotistical. They must keep focus, while still approaching the difficult task of making others aware of their work. In other types of entrepreneurial efforts this is called marketing. Solitude is of the essence. It does not mean we are reclusive or self absorbed. It is necessary to achieve the work we ourselves love. If we don't love it why should others?

Very well said. In order to do our work, we each need specifics in our environment, to effect our unique processes and practices. Otherwise we cannot function.

I respect what your saying about an artist being a little egocentric.. any distraction feels like an assault of vibration that clashes with your fluidity of thought (concentration). I've begun writing since my husband is a scientist deep in his work. When I'm deep in the thoughts of my character I can't be disturbed by his personal vibration clashing with mine...It breaks my conscience streaming. Humans are so fragile, my vibration distracts him the same way when he is pondering a polynomial...I never realized that Mathematics is as emotional to the scientist as it is for a Painter, a writer and a musician. I love the work you produce...

From when you began this "Marching Band" painting (that you worked on with the orange "accident") I liked it very much. The light/dark play in the sky is just spot on. So are the people. Looking forward to seeing it develop more, as you state that you are not yet done with it. Some tweaking required. The house portrait (in oil) is just a different beast. For you that is an easy one. The pace of that is different - requiring a slow tempo. The watercolour is diffinitely a more energetic creation. Your "philosophying" and contemplation regarding the creative process is always an interesting topic to listen to. Great video! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

So relaxing and interesting to watch you work and listen to your life/work comments. I enjoy it so much. I like the light and the life in the marching band paintings although that one instrument (it looks like a tuba?), bothers me where the tube part meets where it splays out. It does not appear centred and I focus on it every time I see this painting. Perhaps it's not supposed to be centered as it's a different instrument? It seems to need a little shadow area low on the left side to centre it more? Well, in the end, it's your painting of course and perhaps it does not bother you and is fine. I understand. Just thought you might have interest in how others may see it! Thank you Titus. I love your videos! May you and your loved ones have a relaxing and joyful Christmas!

Without even seeing the video I am prompted to ask, who actually thought up this question? Why is there an idea that one kind of job has more self-centered people in it than others? Self-centeredness is mostly a question of the level at which a job is performed, but not intrinsic to the work. Artists see beauty (for example) and try to communicate this to viewers, non-artists, who are often too busy to reflect upon this. This is their role and it is a role that is necessary in a society. Artists get paid very little to do this work besides, so it actually takes a lot of sacrifice to become one.

Hi Titus, this week in the UK I watched 'Nigella Christmas in Amsterdam' on TV. (It's a British thing!) Apart from learning how much you Dutch like cheese and how to pronounce Gouda something else grabbed my attention. The programme was filmed in Amsterdam in winter and I realised how brilliantly you had captured the light and colour of the buildings in your paintings! I'm thinking in particular of Raamgracht-Kloveniersburgeal. You captured it perfectly!!!

Thank you Patrick. The brand of that easel is Mabef. It's Italian. Actually it's an easel for working outside, but it was heavy and it is an old one now. So I bought a smaller easel for outside and use this old one as a table easel

I grew up in a minister's house so I received guidance in religion and in music at an early age. I chose on my own, or perhaps I was chosen, to create reflections of reality, politics, religion, science, and emotion in visual art. I am not a professional artist but live in an artistic mind every hour of every day. It is only here where I feel reality. It is only in art that I find reality. Do I need counseling?

I agree with all that you say about being an artist, but us females don't have enough freedom to create our art when and where we want to. It's very frustrating not to get an idea started. We get ideas from just looking every day every day

I have been watching for a while but mostly on streaming services so have not been able to comment. (Perhaps a blessing for you.) But I wondered how much of the style you end up with is the material (water vs. oil) and how much is the subject (house vs. parade) and how each affects your vision. I think it would be interesting to see the same pictures in both watercolor and oil. For instance, another version of the house you just worked on but in watercolor and another version of the parade but in oil. Just wondering...

Sorry Titus, but the sousaphone still bothers me - even though your most recent work makes it clearer that it is a white sousaphone! The light is so wonderful in the rest of the painting, but I tend to agree that it might still be an issue of the angles and shadows ( against the light source) of the curved tube growing into the bell. I wish I could be more precise, but I'm not a brass player!( used to be a woodwind player)

This house portrait (the subject) has so many straight and parallel lines with no angle to give them much perspective. I personally would find this hard as a subject. How do you keep yourself motivated when you find a subject that doesn't speak loudly to you?

Hi Bill. I went to that house by myself this summer. I checked the light and found the right moment for interesting shadows and reflections. I was happy that I had found a spot at the other side of the water and there wasn't any wind that day so I could study the waterreflections too. The colors of the warm red house with the green trees are great to paint. And I like to build a house in straight lines and "bricks". It's a commission and I like to make a painting and make the clients happy.

My comment/question was not about the painting. I was using it as an example for something I would find hard to do because i didn't find the subject exciting from a personal point of view. My question was: How do you stay motivated when you take on a subject that doesn't excite you. I wasn't trying to comment on the painting you were doing for a client. We all take on jobs that are harder to stay motivated for, so what do you do to keep your motivation up so that you can do your best work for that fictional client?@@TitusMeeuws
