I really enjoyed your interpretation of Rick Rubin's book. When you said the book was about confidence, something clicked and I couldn't agree more. When I first began reading it, so many of the things he talked about made me smile, because there was a wonderful familiarity to how his mind works when it comes to being a creative. (Wow! I'm not crazy in how I think about most things-and how I navigate and process all the stimuli of the world around me!) I've been a professional graphic artist for 39 years. Creating fine art is my goal-if I can just get over my "fear of failure." Which is strange to me, because that "fear" never once entered my mind when I was designing newspapers in the '90s and laying out four national magazines at the same time over the past 18+ years, or when I'm designing logos and print advertising for clients nowadays. Being a designer, you'd think I could put all the "overthinking" about creating fine art in the rearview mirror and simply trust the creative process, relax and enjoy that part of being an artist. But the fear of failure is REAL. It's maddening. I'm almost finished reading Rick Rubin's book. It's very well written and chalked full of creative insights. I thoroughly enjoy your KZfaq videos, Titus. I'm able to take something out of them and store that information in my brainpan-and let it marinate-from each and every one of them I watch. Thanks for that! ☮

It is fascinating how our creativity shines through without having to try so hard for it to appear. When I first started watching your videos and you pushed open your window I immediately thought that this is his routine and I would probably have felt distracted by such a window in a good way. There have been studies done on how a calming routine affects our creativity and with children it enhances their ability to concentrate. That’s one reason why my parents allowed us to listen to music while studying. I have learned that pushing myself too hard doesn’t improve my art. When I am most relaxed I find worth in what I do. I have had to learn to study what is referred to as biofeedback. Since I live with severe pain every day I have a limited time when I can tell my body to just calm down. In a sense it might be compared to Lamaze classes. I can control my heart rate, breathing but I also picture myself in my favorite places to be, in the woods and sitting on the dock the the lake when the sun rises and I can greet the sun. It isn’t a perfect way but it helps tremendously and allows me to not be me in that moment. Thank you! We certainly all endeavor to find what works for all of us. Take care.😊

Greetings Titus, I am so appreciative of your videos. I find them and you to be inspiring and so helpful with my own creative pursuits. I was a performing artist for years as well as an educator but now due to my own physical limitations, find myself exploring the visual arts and as of late watercolor which has brought me such joy. As fate would have it, I am currently reading Rubin's book and was very excited to hear your thoughts on it! So thank you. I am giving the book to each of my 3 children for Christmas, trusting that they too will find it resonates with their creative journey.

Very encouraging words. Just do. That's what I always say to myself. As you well explained, if we focus on doing what we have meticulously thought of doing we will most probably fail. Things never happen exactly as expected. The opening to letting things happen, embracing accidents, and using them to good effect is very liberating. It brings back the fun and life into our creations.

I think a really powerful accompaniment to Rubin's book is the book "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It serves as a technical, more scientific analysis to Rubin's more metaphysical and intuitive observations of creativity, presence, elevated consciousness, etc. I'm thankful you shared your opinions on this book with us, Titus!

Before seeing your video, I liked to say or think: “Simple is beautiful”! The balance lies between respect and time in the process of creative work and the creator. When I am in my art studio and I create, I feel good when I respect the material, the process and the time. Your video made me think and realize all that, thank you. So much of what you you have been exploring reminds me of the sayings of Lao-Tzu in the Tao Te Ching which has been my trusted companion and source of inspiration for a long time. It strengths my belief that there is only " one mountain but myriad ways of climbing it" and that Rubin's book is a new guide for that journey. Thank you for emphasising the joys within exploration, always being open to the unexpected and that working harder- "trying to push the river" - isn't necessarily the way to achieve results. Dear Ilona, that is a fascinating concept! That 'line between...doing too much..." in the process is very dynamic: You said it the KEY: EMOTION...Even in the act of destruction...is an idea of REBIRTH...THAT THOUGHT has just struck me! I had created a large pen & ink drawing, A0. It looked like nothing...My friend encouraged me to take a short walk. When I returned, I picked up the bottle of ink, and, as if I was casting a pebble, I cast ink over the drawing, and a beautiful spiral unfurled in front of my eyes! A giant spiral shell with different nuances of hue, shape and colour blossomed from the paper. " I love that...'to discover the artist within...see it and know it as you are doing it.. !"

Today, I had to laugh when Michel said that “suddenly a voice told me ‘flamingoes’”. It is amazing to me that often I have a plan to paint “something”, yet when I look at the blank page, something else suddenly takes shape before my very eyes. It’s so unexpected and droll…….and surprisingly fun.

Hi Titus, thank you for the review of this book. Very helpful. There is going to be a Dutch edition and I am debating getting that one, but might check it out from the library first. You asked for some books that where maybe in the same vein. I hope I put this under the right video, if not apologies. Here's what I'm reading: The Spiritual artist by Christopher Miller. He also has a youtube channel. (Not familiar with it just saying because it's referred to in his book). I like that it has excercises I can take with me during the day and before or during painting. The God artist by Roma Waterman. Note: I am not religious. As within, so without. The world to me is my inner world. This is the perspective from which I'm reading this one, and I'm liking it very much. The mustard seed garden manual of painting. It's an ancient Chinese painting manual, based on the Tao. Henri Li on youtube has a recording of a private lesson with a student on this and a lot of that way of painting seems to have all the things Rick Rubin, you and the others talk about already inbuilt. Anyway thank you for doing what you do and Best wishes.

I agree with @jhesterarts who commented about you not doing tutorials There's more to discovering how to approach our art than knowing what color, what paintbrush or what paper the artist picks. Titus, you share your thought process without inflicting a technique approach that one might try to imitate. I may never create a painting like yours but I will look at light and shadow more carefully and I will strive to infuse my art with the energy that came with the inspiration.

So glad you’ve shared some of what you’ve learned from this book and your own experience. It explains why I’m happier with quick daubs when I’m just playing or experimenting, or with the marks and mixes that happen when trying out colour mixes on a scrap of watercolour paper used the gauge a colour mix before I apply it to a painting. And when I try my hardest to get a perfect painting, I’m often (nearly always) disappointed. Also, when I’ve done something I’m pretty happy with, I can’t really explain what I did to create it? What you say in this video makes a lot of sense of something I’ve always found frustrating and encourages me to let go and be freer.

This book could equally be called How to be a magician. It points out how to tap into the magic within and the things that distract us from that. Thus creating from within could be applied in any endeavor. Us humans have magic/creativity naturally but needs developing. Rubin is a modern day magician
