Now that the TRS-80 Model 4 has fancy graphics, let's put the cherry on top and upgrade it to 128K of RAM. I'll upgrade it using 41256 RAM chips in place of 4164s. Following that, we do a long-run memory test, set up a RAM disk (MEMDISK), use VisiCalc (poorly, I have no idea what I'm doing), and try out Fuzix (a UNIX-like OS for many older micros).
Music/SFX (in order):
Day Breeze by Giovanni Lodigiani - Licensed from Digital Juice
Pacesetter (no artist info available) - Licensed from Digital Juice
Chapters:
Intro (0:00)
RAM Installation (0:53)
Smoke Test Boot (3:43)
Memory Diagnostics (4:29)
MEMDISK - LS-DOS RAM Drive (7:55)
VisiCalc (12:22)
Fuzix (14:40)
Outro (18:24)
I do these videos unscripted, so I apologize if the in-the-moment descriptions of things are a bit scattered. If you have any questions/comments about this video, you can find me in any of these fine locations:

Nicely done on the 128K RAM upgrade. As a side note I'm a huge fan of your TJBChris pushes buttons show LOL!

Thanks! I’m creating little mini-series’ within my videos: “TJBChris Follows Instructions”, “TJBChris Pushes Buttons”, etc. Who knows what’s next! Hah!

I recognize that little clip of "Pacesetter" from the BackTraxx Music Library.

Yeah, that's Pacesetter. Digital Juice also has it in their on-line library, which is where I stumbled on it. It's a great track!

I remeber there was something called UZI (for Unix Z-80 Implementation) that tongue-in-cheek noted in its docs, that swapping out a process waiting on I/O was not really an option. 😂 Either way, using Minix tools gave them pretty tight implementations of most common tools.

We need to remember that "RAM chips" is **not** an installation procedure.

My machine is non gate array (blue CRT and all) with similar upgrades. I haven't been able to figure out what to use the extra RAM for. I think maybe Multiplan and LeScript are two packages that can actually use it. RAMDISK I suppose.

I ran into the same issue…only a subset of programs use the memory. I upgraded it just to do it. Now that I have 128K I’ll be looking for more programs…if I find any there’ll be a video about it. 😃. In the mean time, Memdisk can be worth it if you’re using floppy disks to run the machine.

I have my model 1 from childhood. I need to purchase a model 4 which at age 13, I essentially ran a 20 of them for a Junior High English department (grant) class.

Very cool about the Model I! I still have my childhood machines as well (the CoCo 3 and one of my Model 4s). My school was moving to Apple IIes by the time I was old enough to be allowed to touch them, but there were still a couple Model IIIs and 4s floating around.

Is the crt lightly blue?

This machine has the green phosphor CRT, but the camera gives it a blue-ish tint. I do have a Non-Gate Array Model 4 with the white phosphor, which does look blue. Thanks for watching!
