8 жыл бұрын

Today's episode of TJLC Explained introduces the Phone/Heart metaphor, one of the most prevalent symbols in TJLC analysis. In this video I'll discuss the ways this metaphor tends to be used and explaining what the most important uses mean for TJLC. I hope you enjoy the video!
TJLC stands for The Johnlock Conspiracy or the belief that the writers of BBC Sherlock have intended for John and Sherlock to end up in a romantic relationship together since the start.

So when John starts talking about "experience" in TAB, Sherlock says "Pass me your revolver, I have a sudden need to use it." I'm sure we can all figure out what a revolver is supposed to symbolize, after earlier seeing Moriarty be ever so creative with his own lmao.

Have you considered when John was hypnotised and fell unconscious while talking to sherlock on the roof? Even as he fell and everything had gone limp, except, he curiously kept holding his phone the entire time. He fell, slept, woke up and stood again holding his phone tightly. Several photos from the set confirm.

I assume you are referring to the first "explanation" of the fall in TEH, which turned out to be entirely in Anderson's imagination?

Sarah Strong No I meant the actual falling. Wasn't there one? I Don't remember. Does that mean Anderson ships it :D

the hypnotist was only in TEH in Anderson's fantasy explanation, not in TRF. it actually gave more indication that Anderson shipped Sherlock with Molly. I'm not sure what Anderson imagining John holding onto his phone means. Might have to try to watch that scene again...

The moment Sherlock calls Mycroft at John’s wedding despite how he usually prefers to text, or the way John cheats on Mary with Sherlock’s sister (“it was just texting”) I am quite stunned 😮

In the last clip you showed, Mycroft said, "you really think anyone is believing you?" After Sherlock said reading John's blog helps him because it makes him seem more clever.

Dear Rebekah and TJLCers, I want to thank you all for introducing me to the beautiful love story that is BBC Sherlock. I won't be addressing the fourth season, because this should be a place for kindness. But you have tought me so much about good writing and the importance of LGBT representation, through your passion and caring for the show and its characters. I will never stop believing and am very grateful for being part of the TJLC community, even if it was only for the past two months.

We miss you so much Rebs we really do, I'm just a lesbian who loved you and your videos and the community and having all this fun and conversation. I was sick as all hell when I started watching you're videos and I healed up while joining the community. I made many friends and a fair bit of art and read loads of amazing works by amazing people. I don't know how I feel now, but I'll always believe in Holmes and Watson. Our Holmes and Watson. I'll always believe in our journey and our adventure and all that cleverness. It's a bit funny that I stumble across your channel again when I'm laid up in bed with another sickness. Well, anyways we believed.

Fun fact: You should never stop doing this XD I've always shipped John and Sherlock really hard (especially after I watched ASiB) and I've recently gotten into TJLC, which has obviously only fueled my shipping of the two. It's kind of a pain reading all the articles myself (especially since LSIT is no longer on tumblr- not that I blame them) and being able to listen to someone else explain it all while I'm doing other things is really great :D So thanks a bunch!

Too weird: yesterday at a track meet I was coaching at I lost my phone. I've had it for years, but a la Sherlock literally only had a few numbers on it. All the same, it'll be difficult, or worse, trying to remain connected with those I want or need to be connected to until (and even after, numbers being difficult to re-obtain sometimes) I get a new one...it really is far more than metaphor! Until just this second it never occurred to me to consider anything "deeper" into it (the idea of phone as heart metaphorically). And after doing so, I have to admit, in my own real world, the "phone as heart" metaphor (and my having lost mine....not in a good way as in having lost my heart to someone, but in a sad way as in having lost ability to connect) holds extremely eerily true....

This is some fantastic work and you present everything in such a cohesive manner. I've been a sort of casual Sherlock fan for ages, got into johnlock fic because most of it was well written but had no real thought that the ship might become canon. These videos are exploring so many issues I never considered, and they make a really excellent case. I'm excited to hear more.

So I've been a casual Sherlock fan for ages now, watched the show a few times (bc let's be real, it really doesn't that much time to watch the whole thing), read fanfic now and then and just had a great time having found a show where I love literally every single character. And then somewhen last week I heard of TJLC for the first time when Tumblr exploded on Jan 1st and I was like "well, the German dubbed version is coming out in April, there is no way I won't be spoiled by then so I might as well watch it in English online and look what the community on tumblr has to say" little did I know I was about to get thrown into a rabbit hole of symbols and interpretation and I kinda love it? I'm still learning of course because this matter is so gigantic and has so much to offer and analyse. But these videos give me such a great overview and really get me into believing Mofftiss could have made a show that was more than what it looks like at the first glimpse (even tho I'm still not sure if I believe everything such as this videos matter: the phone as a metaphor of the heart, bc at the end of the day, it's the idea of the original stories brought back into the 21st century. One of the biggest differences between the victorian age and ours is technology such as phones and internet and such. Of course they want to kinda emphasise this. whatever I'm probably making no sense, it's just that I don't know how much I believe every aspect this theory has to offer). I'm grateful for these videos you are making/have made (idk if this series of yours is still going on or everything is said and done😅) and I'll watch the rest of it and find out how much of it I believe and maybe I'm gonna see the show entirely different from now and I'm gonna enjoy the german dubbed version (where i can understand everything, even the few mumbled, really fast spoken sentences of Sherlock, they still give me some time and replays to understand everything, but I'm getting better ^^) even more Thanks for these videos and keep up your great work and who knows, one day i might be one of you crazy yet amazing conspirators💖

Love this series! Really love how you go deep into it. Will you do a video on the drinks subtext some time in the future? And one about the music too? The use of music always felt quite damning to me (like Donde Estas Yolanda for their reunion, stag night music, Oh What A Night's lyric placement etc) but also their own scores like how the opening titles is John and Sherlock's themes combined. And of course, a video on the elephant in the room? There's so much to talk about D:

watching these again, as one does, and I wonder if there is a parallel between the way Mycroft uses others' phones (the pay phone, the fast food joint, etc) to get hold of John for their initial meeting, and the "borrowed voices" Moriarty uses in TGG... I'm not saying I *like* the idea of connecting Mycroft and Moriarty, just, I noticed that this time.

I think it's interesting that the pilot, the great game, and a scandal in belgravia are both centred on first romance, two people dancing around each other. But both Moriarty and Irene are just playing the game, but John is genuine. He's the only real relationship.

If Sherlock prefers to text, what does it mean that Mycroft hates texting, prefers to call on the phone, and only texts when he has no other option? That would imply he is _less_ emotionally closed off than his brother, right? And he is in regards to Sherlock, but not everyone else. Mycroft has no close friends, (or friends for all), while Sherlock has Lestrade, Mr H, and Molly. (And John, but that is going by the assumption of them being 'just friends' ;)
@MoogieSRO
@MoogieSRO 8 жыл бұрын
12:00 - The point you make about Sherlock emoting genuinely to John here, is this actually correct? Because I'm sure I've heard the writers say that Sherlock's talk with Molly was the genuine show of emotion, but what he showed on the rooftop to John was fake. I mean, we've seen multiple times that he's perfectly capable of crying on demand. I know, I know... the writers lie. :) But still. They definitely made a point to contrast these two talks with Molly/John. They could've just as easily said "yeah he wasn't being honest with either of them." I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
@aresvepe
@aresvepe 8 жыл бұрын
Hi! This doesn't completely answer your question, but I have read a few metas that talk about sherlock's "tells" when crying, as to whether it's fake or not. If you look closely at the scenes where he's genuinely emotional (the tarmac scene, and I would say the rooftop scene, and other i can't name off the top of my head), sherlock's face 'contracts' slightly, and you get the appearance of the many chins. He's also seen pulling back his lips, like he's trying not to cry, and takes obvious swallows, like he's trying to swallow his emotions. This is not apparent in the times where we know he's fake crying. I don't know about the specific line from the writers, so can't comment there, but hopefully that helps with whether Sherlock is actually being genuine on the rooftop. (The ideas above are not mine, i can't remember the specific metas I read it in, though I do remember one referred to it as the sherlock 'lizard face')

Also keep in mind that the writers are still lying like carpets about soooo many things in the show, to keep from giving away their plans for the future. I stopped listening to/reading interviews with them after S3, when I noticed they were avoiding addressing any of the questions I had, and instead seemed to be actively trolling or brushing aside, or giving wildly inconsistent "answers". Maybe after S5 airs we will get honest worthwhile interviews and commentaries.

John has been using his sister´s phone during all the seasons, right? Imagine if he gets a phone for himself or gets his old phone (if he had one). Will he give it to Sherlock?
