I love the experimentation and approaches to dodge and burn. My latest experimentation on conifer trees. Using the TK panel I break up the trees into 2 selections. say a zone 3 and a zone 4 luminosity masks. I tighten them up so blending is restricted. The zone 3 burn is done with a dark brush that include jhitter and texture. The zone 4 mask for dodging is done with a texture brush as well. Keep the hits coming!

Hi Dave, You asked for any other methods for D&B so wanted to share my technique. If doing freehand D&B, I created an action to create a 50% grey layer, change the blend mode to Linear Light, reduce fill to 15%, then use Photoshops D&B tool. In this way I can use the burn tool to burn darker areas and if I want to dodge lighter areas I only have to hold down the Alt key and it switches the tool over and release to go back. I can use the fill to adjust the strength. An added benefit is there is no color shift using this method as there is with soft light. Hope this makes sense. Hidden features would be great!

Very nice Dave - I always forget about the Grey Brush and it's a good tool to smooth out transitions ~ thanks for the reminder. Another method I like to use for (Dodge and Burning) D&B is to paint with color either freehand or using a Luminosity Mask, and use/pick a color that for the area that I am dodging and burning. This way the tones (at times) appear to blend smoother versus just D&B with black and white. Dave we have talked about this before, but at times I prefer to use the Brush's flow versus Opacity this way I don't have to lift my brush up and it also (at times) allows for making smoother transitions. I would love to see a hidden feature video. Dave I'll be gone for a few weeks on a workshop and trip to the Southwest so I'll catch up on TK Friday's when we get back. Thank you Dave~

Thanks. "Great point, Mario. Keeping the flow low (around 20% or less) allows for better control of the brush, as lifting isn't necessary. I appreciate both methods and may create a video showcasing both techniques."
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mario. You are right about the flow not having to lift the brush which is a great technique. You can get a good amount of control if you keep the flow very low, say 20% or under. I am thinking about doing a video demonstrating the two techniques. I actually like both techniques.

Great tutorial Dave. On the last method that you demonstrated, where you create a luminosity mask attached to a 50% gray layer to dodge or burn, would it be possible to place the luminosity mask directly on the 50% gray layer and how would you do it? Would that make sense? You could still fine tune the effect with the opacity of the layer. Thanks.

Hi Dave. Another great tutorial. Question for you. I didn’t go through all 107 comments, so I apologize if this question has been covered in one of the previous posts. But I am not completely grounded on the benefit of painting through a mask as opposed to painting through a selection. Intuitively, i’m sure that there is a time and place for each. I am just not sure of when.

Hi, I was late to watch this awesome video. Loved the concept of Paint Contrast. It's too handy when you are doing some creative adjustments. What will happen if we use a colour brush which is placed just beside the grey brush?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Жыл бұрын
You can use the color brush and it pays to experiment because you can get some very interesting results. I like to play with changing color hues, keeping the color the same but increasing or decreasing the saturation and also playing with the luminosity values, along with increases and decreasing the saturation of the color. Also, play with changing the brush opacity for different effects.

Hi Dave, At the 5:30 point in the video, you describe a method for selectively burning by essentially using the masking the mask technique. However, at the 10:30 point, you describe a method for similarly selectively burning by outputing to a selection. Since the results seem to be the same, is there a good reason for using one method vs. the other, or is it just personal preference? P.S. Yes to Hidden Features video!
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly

Both methods yield similar outcomes, with selections resulting in slightly smaller file sizes. Both options work well, but using selections in painting also results in fewer layers.
