Bill Zito already explained his rationale behind the decision. This isn't about the short term, they still have a good team that can compete for the cup. He wanted to keep the team younger. A lot of the players are around Tkachuk's age when he mentioned guys like Barkov, Lundell, and Knight. Huby and Weegar are on expiring contracts, he couldn't commit long term to both players who 29 and 28 respectively. It's a business decision he made on the spot. Tkachuk was made available this off season, he wouldn't be available next off season.

Seems like overkill adding another offensive weapon. Florida needs better defensive structure and game tactics because they were exposed by Tampa.
