In this video I demonstrate how you can possibly bring sparring to your Aikido training. I believe many people get this wrong and try to use Aikido to solve problems I don't believe Aikido was ever designed to solve. The end result is frustration and the feeling of resentment toward one's Aikido training.
Many of the ideas I share in this video come from Christopher Hein who has a channel on KZfaq: / @chushintani

People also tend to forget that the UFC is also ruled by rules that affect the way a fight will go. Iirc no hitting in the back of the head or on the spine. Allowing that would make some shoot fighting less attractive. It's a definite risk to leave your back open like that.

My aikido trainer used to say regarding defence against a knife that you should: 1. Run away 2. Not trying to do a specific technique and instead go takemusu Aikido. 3. And only as a last resort do a specific technique.

I did Taekwondo (would love to do it again) and currently doing Karate and Aikido. Honestly the way Aikido is taught doesn't leave too much room for a more realistic application, since is the art of peace. Sure that is completely fine and not everyone wants/needs to be some kind of warrior. But if you want to apply Aikido in some sparring/ fight type of situation, I would consider two things: First is Aikido techniques can hurt pretty bad the other person so that is no longer very peaceful (hence why the Aikikai seem to forget some techniques that are a bit more hard or Judo-like) and second, Cross training will give you a lot of tools for applying Aikido. I realized this during my karate sparring seasons. Aikido even has a lot of good stuff against grappling arts (Jujitsu is a root of Judo and Aikido). I really liked how you found some practical applications to your Aikido, they make a lot of sense to me honestly. 🍻🥋🔥

Agreed, for instance the goal/possibility of kotegaeshi is to break the opponents wrist. With shionage you could potentially seriously mess up the others elbow since you lock up their upper arm and pull in the direction elbow can't bend. It's easy to forget that the falls aikidokas do is to protect them from serious injury. Now how you realistically get into that position can of course be discussed. You mentioned aikikai, have you ever seen or tried the iwama style of aikido? I feel that aikikai is more of flow while iwama is, at least initially, is more focused on technique and generating power. The end goal is the same but the path looks quite different.

Good video! If we recall that Aikido and BJJ have common ancestry, it shouldn’t be shocking that they can both be applicable. Their development and evolution went in different directions, which for aikido, didn’t include the same amount and type of pressure testing. Which is fine. Roy Dean opened my eyes to the value of Aikido when considering ranges of combat. Early engagement may include an opponent charging at you - the aikido range and skill set. If the opponent successfully enters into a closer range, and BOTH can establish grips, we are now in Judo range. And after the judo throw, if we both are on the mat, we are in BJJ’s specialized range. This isn’t universal, but was a brilliant insight. If an opponent charges one with a fixed bayonet, the BJJ butt scoot would be fatal.

Very good demos Sport combat has become the litmus test that all martial arts are judged against. Sadly that kind of comparison leaves the other aspects of martial arts on the table- like self defense when you're not a champion athlete. Like non brutal self defense. Like skills and physical activity that can be done until old age. These demos show aspects that are approachable and actually desirable. Not everyone wants to be a meat headed bro fighter.

Personally I think it needs a little more pressure. No one will grab you and let you manoeuvre them like that. You have to think of the purpose of the attack. If someone is grabbing me what are they trying to do? Take me down, kidnap me, grab and then strike? That's what I think would make Aikido moves better.

Good video. I also did aikido and you're completly right about it not being for competive fighting.After practising it for several years I switched to taekwondo becouse I wanted more physicality and aikido atleast in my school wasn't great training if u wanted to get stronger and in better shape etc. Now I'm thinking about switching to judo since I like to grapple and we don't do that so often in taekwondo. Ideally I would like to practice all 3 martial arts but I don't have the time right now and so I have to choose one right now. I'm extremely stiff and so taekwondo was very hard for me and I was really bad on it but I always dreamed about being able to kick like a taekwondo practitioner. What art should I choose? Aikido isn't enough physical training, I'm very bad at taekwondo and in judo I'd have to start all over becouse I have no experience in it.

They all move like aikidoka. I'm afraid that, if you teach them aikido, that in the process you have ruined them as partners for anything close to realistic. You don't need to get wacked by a staff or anything -- at base level, you at least need someone who actually adapts to your counters and gives you something to work with instead of grabbing, holding, and waiting.

Fair enough my friend, if I grab someone who has never done aikido, what would you like me to instruct them to do for the exercises? Grab and don’t let go, resist in any way you can, or do you want more from them? I will make the video for you, but tell me what you want to see in it first.

@@tkdguide I should clarify that the fact they have training at all isn't necessarily a problem. Maybe with the right task constraints, you can get them to be smart and make a real effort to hold you. But it seems like aikido is very unique (similar to systema) in that it spends an inordinate amount of time training good, adaptable behaviors out of learners rather than encouraging them. In one of the exercises, the fault was more so in the constraints themselves ("you can't let go"). You might try opening the constraints or adding secondary tasks, like counter sweeps and takedowns are on the table. Or they have to push and/or drag you out of a space. However, that doesn't really explain the way they move in the other drills, where they take a recognizably aikido stances and move in uniquely aikido ways. Also, if you remove any possibility of bear hugs and bodylocks, the utility of the whole system for any purpose -- getting away, weapon retention, etc. -- becomes really suspect.

@@combatlearning alright, so if I take someone how has never done aikido and tell them to try to throw me down, would that be satisfactory?
@combatlearning
@combatlearning 9 күн бұрын
@@tkdguide Why don't we back things up a little bit. I know you have a bad hip, so let's start with gaining and holding a bear hug instead of jumping to takedowns. This is one big control position from which both trained and untrained individuals will attempt to attain and take you down. Remove the finish (takedown) from the equation -- at first -- and focus on preventing the precondition of such a takedown/tackle from occurring. See how the aikido works from there. Assess the behavior of the player who is attempting the bear hug. Does it seem like an authentic and self-determined attempt, or does it appear that he's trying to be an aikido attacker still? Is he purposely stilting his own tactical behaviors to leave you an out? Is he failing or succeeding to adapt to your countertactics? The task instructions should simply be, "clasp both hands together around my midsection." Arms in or out of the bear hug doesn't matter to me, although there are reasons to build games around those conditions too.

This is not sparring though. The concept is good, but in application, it may be harder than you expect. What I currently see is drilling with a semi-compliant partner than grabs and waits.
@tkdguide
@tkdguide 13 күн бұрын
I get your point, but remember that sparring always features a semi compliant partner no matter the context. In these exercises the goal of my partner was: 1. Maintain a grip at all cost to immobilize the person. 2. Maintain a grip so that the weapon hand does not get freed. 3. Keep the weapon. 4. Maintain a grip and resist any technique being by applied. A wrestler might call this drilling because in a match the goal is to pin the other guy. In the case of aikido, there is no match. It’s a defense only martial art. The only way to spar is to give each person different objectives.
@hellohennessy3462
@hellohennessy3462 13 күн бұрын
@@tkdguide In the case of this video, the point was to pressure test correct? If so, simple holding the weapon with all your might won't work, especially since Aikido is the best at disarming. In a defensive situation only, the assaillant should be more agressive. He should be pushing, go against the motion, pulling back, running in. No feints since feints are unrealistic in this scenario. From this video, all I see is the person grabbing you with all his strenght and wait for you to react. This doesn't differ much from the traditional way of training aikido. Only difference in this is that there is movement, both practitionners move around. In wrestling, you also have drills like this where a person must get a grip on the other while the other avoid getting gripped. In trains the defender and attack at the same time. It may be hard for Aikido to apply this since, Aikido has no concept of attacking, but just having the assaillant actively try to win will make this exercice way better. Aikido is great, an weak person can overpower a strong person. The problem is that, are you able to do that during a high stress situation. The problem all comes down to training. So video suggestion. Aikido defending against agressive attacker. The assaillant's goal is to bring make the aikido person fall down.

Aikido is often categorized as a grappling art. The scrutiny lies in seeing the other grappling arts and how they cross over and contend with one another. For example if you watch a jiu jitsu tournaments you will see people use Judo, Wrestling, and sambo moves etc. Although their maybe a few examples of “aikido like” moves being used Aikidos general curriculum doesn’t have much overlap. This puts Aikido in this “specific use” category that is more “art” than “martial. This distinction is seldom made leading to disillusioned aikidoka who believe they can apply what they know in a fight… and that is a problem.
