Thank you very much. Been training for 50 years. Had the fastest and strongest kick all the way to being 45 years old. Then injured my right knee skydiving. WASNT bad but got worse over time. Eventually had to have it replaced. Broke my hip at 7 years old. Had no issue till I was 55. Now I struggle with arthritis in my left hip. Can only chamber my left leg at a much lower level. So kicks are difficult for me. Why I focus so much with my hands and short lower level kick. But your video did give me so tips on getting my kicks back. Thank you. I study Shaolin Kung Fu. Shotokan,JKD,and Aikido. Thanks for the kicking tips.

Thanks for the kind words! I feel for you, I also have arthritis in one of my hips along with torn cartilage on each side. My kicks aren’t what they were a few years ago. I’m looking into stem cell treatments. Good luck on recovering your knee!

@@tkdguide The knee is great. Hip sucks. And it’s because I’m to lazy to stretch. Why I started Yoga. Which is the foundation of all martial arts. Yeah. Getting old a bitch. I’m 68. But still in good shape. Just need to be more disciplined on stretching. But will more likely need hip replacement in 2 to 3 years from now. Lost cartilage in hip. Keep training my friend. It’s just good health.

Thank you :) I have a blue belt exam coming up. Second tip certainly is something I have to practice more. And to remember to stretch daily as I have never been flexible in my life... I have a hard time just reaching the chin, which to me is a huge accomplishment as I used to have a hard time just touching my knees with my arms. Taekwondo has not only helped me a lot for my health, flexibility, confidence but the exercise and routine has helped me get through loss. Everyone should practice a martial art, it's hard to fathom the amount of good it brings us.

Very informative video on the improvement of various kicks. I had studied Moo Duk Kwon Tae kwon do for seven years... long enough to attain my 1rst Dan. I would have liked to continue, but my daughter's college education was a major priority at the same time, so I decided that her career was worth more than my training. I never really mastered the flying jump back kick due to back problems, but man! I could execute a sliding side kick and a 'horseback' kick that kept my opponents backed up during free sparring! Alas! Now I'm much too old for serious, physical aspects of martial art activity, but.... the knowledge is still within me!

@ The intro, I only have less than a couple months of experience with TKD when I was around 13 in the mid-'90s. I plan to go back to it and develop mastery. A few years before 2010 I participated in a Shorin Ryu Karate dojo I was interested in joining and at some point while I was struggling to do the FORMS I was doing for literally the first time ever and I overheard a potbellied "master" coaching a little boy after I casually did a back kick that was pretty much a "Scorpion Kick" but straight back, "If he can do it, it MUST be easy." No one said anything positive to me, it was only years later when I thought of that as a backhanded "compliment". That was the LAST time I went there. I looked at the intro and even I don't kick like that and even I would be able to do the kick at 0:09. Then again maybe I'm an OUTLIER/exception. Oh how silly of me, being able to do something ONCE isn't what matters, it's doing it 10K times that count.

Your knee most of the time always chambers straight up in front of you. You never go side on. That comes after the initial chamber of the knee, as you then start to straighten the leg. A side kick still has the chamber of the knee come straight up in front of you, then you twist the hips as you straighten the leg.

He's good but you only tighten just before impact or you are too rigid. Not a negative critique but probably worth mentioning so you don't wear yourself out or flag your attacks . To fight is to look less than you are. Relax and get used to combat. Be aware that there are other ways to do a side kick or roundhouse that are faster and do not flag your intentions. This man knows this and has probably uploaded options or will. If you want to be an effective fighter, do not rely on Taekwondo alone. It is awesome for your legs but yo must have a ground game, such as BJJ and implicitly you must know how to box. Once you get in close your hands and wrestling skills will save you. If your life is in danger, have no boundaries . Do not be afraid to fight, you have nothing left to loose and your life might depend on it! Also, maybe study some Kung foo witch is very much based on rounder techniques and thus... very good for understating yourself. Be aware that most people do not know how to fight, angry people are often drunk. Practice studiously and you will usually come out on top, regardless of stature. Avoid fights, but stand up for yourself and others that cannot defend themselves . Do not create problems when you can just walk away.

i like what you said about chambering your kicks especially the side kick. but to do exercises for learning how to do a side kick and chamber your legs they are excellent for someone who is young in shape and has been doing it for a while. but not for someone who is lets say 40 years old and a beginner. especially if they are not naturally that coordinated. also the whole Idea of hitting with your foot is generally not that good. you would be better of hitting with your shin and learn how to transfer lots of momentum into your kicks than try you kick someone with a foot especially if you are not wearing shoes. you do hit with your foot when delivering a side kick or a front kick. but front kick is an important tool for measuring the distance not for doing lots of damage. with sidekick you do kick with your foot (either the ball of your foot or more often the heel depending on your range) and yes I would love to have a good sidekick and yes it can do lot of damage (although not necessarily more than the roundhouse) but relaying only on it is not effective on its own.

@@tkdguide firs thing i said is that your exercises are very good for someone who is already in good shape coordinated and flexible but will not be helpful if someone is not (much like with most Teakwondo kicks) the second point I made is that hitting with your foot is not generally a good idea at less you are doing front kick which is used to control distance not deliver damage or a sidekick which can deliver significant damage but you can't rely on only one move if rest of them are ineffective (such as roundhouse with the foot instead of the shin)

Also tightness is not a full picture for me I was always too tight. when I became looser my punches greatly improved. you should tighten your arm only when you make the contact with the target. while doing a side kick it makes more sense to be little bit tighter but also latter on not at the very beginning of the kick.
