As a Belgian I thought our Christmas markets were big but oh my gosh, German Christmas markets are HUGE. I'd like to do them all someday, especially Aachen, Cologne and Dortmund which are not fair from the German-Belgian border

That was a nice list, no matter which city or town you like to visit in Germany at Christmas time, you will not get disappointed. It's almost everywhere quite nice, with a lovely atmosphere. It's all about enjoying a good time.

christmas makets are always outside and they are in almost every town, the christmas markets in the smaller towns are mostly nicer than in the big ones and its so much fun to go have a after work party there or enjoy it just with friends and family every day or at the weekends...

At the beginning of the video, the noodles you saw are spätzle. The noodles are egg noodles. There are usually a few different sauces you can have on top of them: Mushroom sauce, herb sauce, cheese sauce, browned butter sauce and tomato/cheese sauce. The little wooden booths are put up and taken down every year. It's nice to be outside in the cold drinking warm drinks like Glühwein [glue-vine] (which is a spiced mulled wine), Eierpunsch (a warm, sweetened alcoholic, egg-based drink similar to egg nog) or hot chocolate. The Advent/Christkindl/Christmas markets usually begin the last week/weekend of November until December 22. It is usually open every day from 11:00am-9:00pm.

Sorry, but that is not an accurate list. She was mainly in western Germany obviously, and then did some trips to bigger cities in other parts such as Stuttgart, Berlin, Munich and Dresden. Check markets in the Harz mountains, in Nuremberg, Bamberg, Rothenburg, Hamburg etc. etc. Most of them will be much much better than Dortmund or Essen or Esslingen.

No Christmas market this year, once again....

Well, that was all pre-Corona...I live in Germany, havent been to a Christmas Market in two years. Last year there were non, this year they closed them down before I had the chance. They lacked visitors anyway with all the controls etc. And should Corona ever end there probably wont be Christmas markets because all the vendors are bancrupt after two or three years without income.

Fun fact about the Cologne cathedral: It‘s building started in 1248. But after they ran out of money, they finished it with the help of a rich „investor“ and through donations in 1880. Wow, Kati, when you repeated Aachen that was a perfect rendition of this version of the most hated diphtong in the German language, the 'CH' sound. I am amazed. Most non-native German speakers either render it into a 'k' sound or a 'sh' sound (sorry, I have no idea how to use phonetic spelling, never learned it). But yours was perfect on the throat scratching quality. Nice and keep on practicing! 👍 Aachen was the final destination for all new Kaiser / emperors in the Holy Roman empire when they toured throughout all German states during their crowning ceremony. With there being an ever increasing number of nations but ever decreasing ground area due to splitting off parts for the next generation of heirs to a throne, this could take quite some time for most emperors before returning to their respective German home nation. In its history the Holy Roman Empire of Germanic Nations (as it was called in its entirety) consisted from roughly a dozen major states to well over 200 more or less tiny nations, all interlocked in feudal familial connections somehow. All of that stuff of who, why, when and where had to be settled among all the kings and nobility long before a new emperor was chosen and crowned. Aachen always was the final destination for the crowning so it is a fairly old city in Germany.
