You can be brutally honest and still have some tact about it. If a family member asks for my opinion of something, I’m going to say what I feel. But I’m not going to do it in a way that destroys them as a person.

Leah's Mom doesn't deserve the title Mother. She perversely takes pleasure assaulting Leah with cruel remarks. The sister isn't much better. Mom needs behaviour modification therapy and Leah needs to distance herself until her uncaring mother changes her behaviour. Too bad the mother couldn't be put through similar brutal assaults and have others laugh at her. The experience might make her face who she is and what harm she's doing and perhaps want to change and make the effort.

I’ve always been chubby and my mom would NEVER say anything disparaging about my weight. She has always told me I was beautiful. I am so thankful to have a kind, gentle mother. And I have always tried to be gentle with other people’s feelings too, as a result.

Leah's mom stating "it's in my nature" to be brutally honest is just hogwash. You can change your "nature". Ask me. I've done a LOT of work changing what I say and how I say it. It's not easy, takes a loooong time but it's worth it if you don't say things that hurt those you love.
