It's interesting that so few on the left of the Labour party are part of the co-op party when they advocate for co-operativism more than any other group in Labour. McDonnell and Corbyn wrote a policy which would allow workers of a company or factory which was going to be outsourced, sold-off, or shut-down to vote on turning the company/factory into a worker co-op with access to low-interest loans to get them started.

@Lewis Coyne same could be said of any party - if everyone voted for the Lib Dems they would have more influence. But they don't, primarily because the voting system makes voting for anyone except the two main parties pointless. And as those parties are (1) monoliths representing only a single very narrow slice of possible opinions and (2) are part of an adversarial system where they are fundamentally opposed, change either from within or without is essentially impossible. FPTP is designed for a small electorate l, not universal suffrage.

Co-operativism would basically be a disaster as it would make British equity markets effectively redundant. Much of new capital generation relies on financial investors from banks to ordinary consumers. These people wouldn’t be able to trade equity in a completely co-operative system as there would be none to trade and issue as only workers would hold the shares. So although this would mean workers would receive greater dividends off of the shares giving them higher pay, it would also mean that raising funds for the company (especially for any new, smaller business) would be virtually impossible. This would massively slow down innovation for only a very marginal benefit to workers.

Huh thank you so much. 100% I will look into the cooperative party now and vote for their MPs if one ends up standing in my area. In a time when the Labour Party keep kicking their left down, its great to see that it seems like we have our own portion of the party. Also for real, in the US, Bernie should 10000% do something like this with the Democrats; form his own party where you can be a representative of it and the Dems at the same time.

Volume was a little quiet on this one but all in all I'm really happy to get this video! This is such an Important subject; Cooperatives may be one of the few positive movements away from our current exploitative version of capitalism. I didn't know Andy Burnham was a cooperative party member and that has nudged me over to wanting him as Labour leader should he run one day. So all-in-all I'm very happy this video was made. Really interesting and it's had a tangible effect on my political decisions in the future. I would love to know what other parties double up like this. Most of the similar alliances in UK politics are between Northern Irish and GB parties. The SDLP and Labour are not quite allied, but the SDLP's MPs receive the Labour whip - and the same goes for the Alliance Party and the Liberal Democrats.

For me, the Co-Op end of the Labour party would be more appealing (I speak as a Classical Liberal, swing voter, who spoiled my last national election ballot). I like that it still focuses on the individual, but how individuals can come together and co-operate. That's admirable, and feels quite centrist, appealing to the benefits of the individual and community. Too many left leaning ideologies, from Communism, Progressivism and Socialism, sacrifice the individual too much at the expense of the collective, for example with "positive discrimination"/quotas that make it difficult for me to support. I've honestly never heard of this party, but I hope they continue to do well and get more attention. Thanks for sharing!
