That paint looks fabulous! This is why layering multiple semi-transparent coats works best. Even though it’s through a digital camera, rgb screens and KZfaq compression, it still looks much better than a single opaque coat! Thanks Sam!

Wonderful Special Sam. In Germany a similar day on the 2nd Sunday of Nov. commemorates all fallen in armed conflicts (Volkstrauertag). In Belgium where we live now 11 Nov. is a national day as well (Armistice Day). The painted graffiti looks very well good done. The weathering itself is passable for novices in weathering of models we thought. For proficient modellers, it's appears to be the typical quality from services doing such; that is a tad primitive, not very realistic. Prototypical weathering looks consistently blended with very subtle darker oily and rusty dabs and streaks by rain throughout rolling stock instead of showing highly contrasted transitions all over. All depends on personal preferences as well of course and level of experience. However, it is a brilliant way of commemorating in the hobby. Cheerio.

Apart the artwork, 1st class details and wonderful weatheting. For the bogies, if they had molded shorter by just 2 mm the nearby caissons, it might have passed the 2nd radius to become an A, to be sold also weathered but with no handwork at a quite lower price.

I've seen some model train companies in America offer special hand-weathered versions of their locomotives and rolling stock with hand-painted graffiti, so a model like this isn't unheard of. I'm more familiar with weathering specialists themselves selling new hand-weathered items than a model shop. I'd like to see you attempt a weathering job on one of the freight cars you already have, like those AliExpress wagons.
@Simon-Davis
@Simon-Davis 8 ай бұрын
Shame about the running, but the paint job really does make up for it. Absolutely superb! The radius fix is like you say, a bit of a shave off either the bogie end or the inside of the hopper, but not all that difficult if required. Its a bit of an oxymoron given the real things were well known for being able to traverse tight curves! Kernow also did these wagons predecessors, the PBA 'Clay Tigers', and those are an equally impressive huge bogie hopper. Added bonus with the Clay Tigers is that the ones I have will negotiate a tighter curve, they breeze through 2nd radius and will manage first radius...ish. They'll grumble through 1st but if there are two of them they buffer lock. As I model the Midlands in the 1980s they're an essential Speedlink wagon for the Potteries traffic. Definitely one worth reviewing and to compare with this JIA.

I’m glad you’ve done one of these, wanted to see 1 for awhile they look great on the website, shame about the performance, for that price even with nice artwork with no performance it’s very very expensive for a siding piece, surprised how generous you’ve been with the value, maybe the subject has softened this, but £100 for half a models paint job is abit stiff

In not scared of tinkering with models to make then run smoother or fixing them when broken, having said that I wouldn’t do it to a brand new and rather expensive model, after all you wouldn’t buy a new Ferrari and have to repair it yourself before it would work

I picked up a new EFE Class 58 for a very good price at the great electric train show this year, it comes with pipes and details fitted to the bufferbeam that you would need to snap off in order to fit and use a coupling so for now, its not actually capable of pulling anything without damaging itself straight out of the box. There was also no indication on which way round to fit the DCC decoder to it either. Its a good model in terms of finish, detail and performance however I'm glad I didnt pay full price for it.

Absolutely beautiful looking wagon. Well done TMC. The problem with detailing can be overcome by removing a small amount of plastic at the rear corners of the bogies. It’s not noticeable when running. Keep up the good work Sam. I love your reviews as you call a spade a spade. Remberence day is the same here in Australia, with the poppies as well. Likely most commonwealth countries would know about it, but maybe countries outside the commonwealth, like the USA, would not know. This is an amazing looking model. Do some of the proceeds go toward veteran support organisations? Some models are not designed to run on 2nd and smaller radius curves, but it would be nice to have that mentioned if that was the case. It would make an impressive static display in a disused siding. With that said, a lot of wagons/tankers used in freight would be that weathered in real life and running daily. You get use to running prestine models on a model railway, but in real life they would be that weathered and rusted with dirt and the whole thing.

My only question is whether any of the high price ended going to charity. The Royal British Legion of course. Your suggested use as a static display in a siding would be fine, but if the charity doesn't get a share it feels like a con game.

There are models where not running on R2 / 18" curves is to be expected, like those massively long US gondolas you tested earlier, but something like this with two-axle bogies should be able to do so. I don't think it would have taken much trimming of the undercarriage detail to give the few additional degrees of swivel required. Perhaps they felt the visual impression of the wagon would have been compromised by that, I can't fathom why they wouldn't have done it otherwise.

14:15 I do wonder why people point to the track layout as an issue - these products are sold to your average consumer, you almost have to assume a worst case scenario (or at least a less than perfect one). Car reviewers don't get criticised for driving cars on roads that are too bumpy (indeed, I've read many where a car that goes well on a Mediterranean launch event drive gets marked down once confronted with the average potholed UK road)
@williamsquires3070
@williamsquires3070 8 ай бұрын
Someone probably followed the design drawings TOO closely; the wheelbase (of the model) should have been increased just slightly so the bogies can swing freely. This is common on HO scale models. This would probably not be an issue with a flatcar (flat wagon), but here, it looks like the bogies are hitting the hopper discharge chutes. 😢 All said, it would make a nice static display for a diorama.

Unfortunately, the wagon cannot handle 2nd radius curves which makes it quite useless to run it behind any locomotive but the artwork on the wagon I cannot complain and it is only good for display like you said Sam.

Not a fan of the particular art, so unless it is outright original not replica of something the painter was handed and coppies thousand times its unescesary gimmick. Weathering tho that i see plenty of value in - customers running industrial layout might appreciate something that looks like it was running for years in heavy duty.

(@8:19) The brake rigging on the end of the covered hopper wagon looks suspiciously like one on the N. American rail system, as that’s definitely a brake cylinder (and linkages) I see there. My understanding is that British wagons/vans use a vacuum, whereas the N. American rail system uses pressurized air. It looks like someone used the tooling for an American or Canadian cylindrical hopper, then modified it with different end caps and British-style bogies (and screw-link couplings.) can someone over there in the U.K. confirm or deny this? Do these (prototype) wagons really have this brake rigging?

While many UK railway companies did indeed use the vacuum brake* and it tended to be the standard up until the 1960s, Pretty much every freight wagon event coach and every loco built since the 1970s uses the air brake system. *Getting a steam loco to create a vacuum using a basic ejector with no moving parts is easy - by contrast getting a steam loco to create air pressure requires a special air pump full of moving parts and thus not only more expensive to make but also with grater potential to go wrong. With diesels on the other hand creating a vacuum requires what amounts to an air pump running in reverse so their is no saving in equipment terms and air generally gives a higher brake force than vacuum.

No Really Sam, Manufactures are making realistic modern rolling stock that do require prototypical larger Radius in curves and turnouts. You will be seeing more of this from other manufactures as well, as the demand for realistic modern day rolling stock goes up. I've seen this Issue happen on a modern day Tanker Car that was release roughly 2 years ago. Cheers! 😊

Not really, moat models are made to run on second radius… I can’t think of any other British wagons that don’t off hand. If they can’t handle those curves, the manufacturer should disclose that clearly!

@@SamsTrains Richard over at Everard Junction, literally had to rework his whole Fiddle yard over reliability issues cause of tight Radius and those four axle Tanker Wagons he had to have. I'm not making this stuff up.

The weathering and detail look very good, only let down by an awful copy of the Union Jack, totally wrong. Great review though, thank you Sam.👍
