I legitimately grew up with both shows!! To be honest, looking back 03 version did literally have us a lot of great aggressive attitude with cool action scenes, the humor of each turtle’s character still shows how they really interact with their personalities mix with unique comedy just like 2012 version but different. Plus the 03 April and pirai was my big childhood crush 😍❤️still to this day.

I’ll say this. Whether or not you like 2012 or 2003, it’s amazing that these two versions of the show created a massive part of the Tmnt community. I grew up with 2012 but later checked out 2003 and liked it as much.

I love the TMNT 2012 it started me being a TMNT fan. On 2020 I decided to watch the TMNT 2003, and man was it fantastic the story, the writing, and animation, but choosing which version of these two shows are hard. If I have to choose which one is the best it’s the TMNT 2012, because I grow up with this show, and being nostalgia, but both side will agree that both shows are fantastic for their own reasons.

I prefer the 2012 version(Then again that's the version I grew up with)Mainly due to the how more realistic the relationship between Leo,Raph,Donnie and Mikey was handled.They felt like actual brothers and agrued alot.The 2003 never felt like that from what episodes I did watch.Also another then I prefer from the 2012 version is how Mikey is handled,most times he messes things up but then you get moments of him saving the day, ex: Creating the retro mutagen,curing his brothers form the Mutant wasp,Dimension X,etc.This is just my opinion.if you like the 03 show that's cool but for me 2012 takes the cake all the way...Besides 2012 Casey

2003 is peak of Tmnt franchise, first 4 seasons of this show is must watch for every tmnt fan, it's just unbeatable, 2012 is pretty good but in compression 2003 is so much better in everything.

I personally prefer the 2003 version over the 2012 one. The 2012 series has issues that not many people want to adress & while the 2003 series is not perfect either, it's still a better experience, especially it's first 5 seasons, because the writing & tone the show had was really great & season 5's ending felt like the show should have ended there, but because of the popularity of the 2003 Ninja Turtles, 4Kids wanted the creators to push the franchise in a more kid friendly direction, which was the reason why the 2003 Ninja Turtles declined in quality. I still enjoy Fast Forward for what it is, but Back to the Sewers was when the series truly went down hill for me. Even though Cyber Shredder's design was pretty dope, giving 03 Ninja Turtles actual eyes while they are wearing masks was really off putting & Donnie's character arc wasn't as well established, because if I wanted to see Donatello have some character development, I wished they did something with him after the episode The Same as it Never Was by giving Donnie PTSD & how that alternative reality really messed him up emotionally. That could have been a better direction in my opinion.

I do agree with you for the most part, but I do think that the 2012 show should have won. Sure, 2003 was great, but the story telling, the maturing of each of the turtles, and the introductions of already known characters and original ones were done so much better in 2012 (I am unbiased, I love both shows equally, but need to admit that in terms of better show, 2012 wins)

I was a kid when 2012 was airing but watched a lot of 03 in my spare time as a kid as well. Both shows have really good positives, but even though 2012 has some really good episodes, 2003 is like the Batman the animated series but for TMNT which imo is better.

I appreciate the amount of effort you put into examining these two shows.I like both shows but i might like the 2003 show a bit better, i wish the 2012 series had taken time to give mikey and splinter a one on one, heart to heart moment like with the other 3 turtles, they did have a heart to heart but never a moment were it was just the two of them in the room. 2003 mikey and splinter went on there own adventure and they beat hun, touch, and go, and because of them, they got the money to give to raph to give to mrs.morrison the blind woman (though it was raph's idea to give her the money but it was splinter and mikey that got it from hun in the first place).

i agree with most of your points i am not a huge fan of April 2012, to me they boost her way too much to the point that i think that she became way to powerful for the turtles. which made a lot of scenes that she was in after the 4th season feel pointless at least in my opinion. and The 2012 Cassy is the worst by far April and Donnie would be much better without him cuz he created the stupid love triangle. however 2012 Donnie besides the Love triangle was very charming. and 2012 Mikey was Adorable. however i still think 2003 is better even if Karai was maybe annoying in there but i still think it did a lot of things better then 2012 that being said 2012 version is still a great show.

Putting 2012 Donnie and Mikey over the 2003 ones? Donnie went from being calm and levelheaded in 03 to being the generic introverted and overly anxious nerd in 12 (and the love triangle is annoying). Mikey went from being witty and just as capable a fighter as his brothers to being just childish and frankly kinda dumb.

I grew up with the 2012 series and that is what made me a turtles freak. I say the 2012 show has better background art on merchandise. I liked the 2003 series as well, because I was born in 2004. But anyways I liked both series. Doesn't matter which one is great.

I think overall my preference leans towards 2003, I found it more consistently enjoyable and for whatever reason, at least in a binge setting, I found 2012’s pacing to be kind of lackluster to the point where it was almost frustrating. In 2003 no episode felt misplaced or without reason, they fully committed to the serialized format without episodic plots being really unnaturally jammed between the interesting plot progression. Like don’t get me wrong, those episodic plots are great consumed on their own, but when you’re watching it all at once, the slow drip feed of plot and information becomes reeeeeally noticeable at some points.

I know that it isn’t a fair comparison since Tmnt 2012 is more modern and has better quality stuff, but you gotta admit that the Tmnt 2012 opening and theme ost is an absolute banger. Like the violins just do it for me.

I mostly grew up with the 2003 version of TMNT and I always loved that series more than any of the other version. But, I did start watching the 2012 series with the whole new redesign and animation quality. It was okay for the most part and it did tone the seriousness of the 2003 version. But, my favorite is always the 2003 and then the 2012.

I liked them both, but the '03 show is the one I totally went for. That one is what I had as a kid, and I was grateful to have a new show when I was in high school. Honestly the '03 show had way better toys. Mainly action figures. That was a good time in my life. A lot was going on then. I was a hulk fan as a kid as well as Spiderman. Both were big at the time so this was a historical time for me.

I'd argue a negative of the 2012 animation is how dead NYC is, it's FREAKING NYC yet it's always dead, one of the most crazy active cities in the world has little to nothing going on in the outsides, cars, crowds and so on. I know TMNT in general isn't into the aforementioned, but in 2012 it's so distracting to how noticeable it is.

I think its more of preference+nostalgia, because both are great as far as I know, but depending on your personal likings you might like one over the other.

Personally I think the look of the 2012 tmnt is better. I love the character designs they remind me of the IDW turtles. And in terms of animation I love all the anime like style of 2012. I also love the 2D effects in the 3D animation of 2012.

i will say i liked 2012 raph alot more yeah he and micky bicker alot but to me that makes their relationship as brothers feel more realistic and in contrast to raph almost killing mikey rin 2003 raph in 2012 may get annoyed and even lose his temper as his brothers but its obvious he cares deeply for them whenever one of them gets hurt or injured he is shown to be very concerned and loving and its almost a complete 180 for his character i really like this as it makes him more relatable intresting and gives him more depth

To me it's not about nostalgia or which one you grow up with. I personally my first tmnt cartoon was the 2007 3D animation, which is awesome. But 2012 tmnt was my growing up with. Letter this year I watched the 2003 tmnt and men I was slapped. See both shows are really awesome, but let's be really honest. 2012 tmnt is the best adaptation of tmnt. From the story the art, creative decisions, character development. Not to mention the villains and the fact that they went from New York to different tone and boy the team song is just rad. If you would compare seriously it's 2012.

Ok, so here's the thing. I love TMNT 2003 as much as anyone else. And more often than not, I will agree that it is better than 2012. But in my opinion, this video does 2012 a disservice sometimes. Not only by downplaying a lot of the elements it has and not seeing how they work, but also by granting 2003 praise based off some unnecessary merits. At least, early on in the video. Later on, things start to make more sense to me. PLOT: In this segment, you mention how 2012 reuses some plot points from 2003 and how it was basically jokes with some cool fights. First of all, 2003 reuses plot points, too. And just as 2012 did, they give unique interpretations to it. For example, 2003 reused not only the Triceraton arc, a plot you said 2012 ripped from 2003, but also the fleeing New York plot after a turtle is badly injured. The 90s live action movie did it, just with Raph instead of Leo. And in all honesty, 2003 feels closer to copying the movie than 2012 did to copying 2003. While the movie and 2003 have the turtles hiding out in April's home while the one turtle goes off on his own in a fit of frustration, only to be ambushed by Foot Soldiers, 2012 has the city going to shit during a Kraang invasion during that time, meaning everyone is doing multiple things at once. And they focus even more closely on Leo's recovery and emotional state during so, where it's only briefly touched on in 2003 before he's fully healed up again. That's just one example. And on that note, that is one of the many instances in which the series shows how emotionally complex it can be, with the turtles dealing with their defeat and perceived loss of Splinter during that time. A character, btw, that 2012 seems to be the only show with the balls to kill off. This coupled with Karai's origins of being raised by a man who stole her from her true family after accidentally murdering her mother, the death of Zog after feeling used by the turtles and letting himself die rather than allow himself to be saved by them, April dealing with her father becoming a mutant in honestly a very realistic way, and so much more. A jokey show with some cool fights doesn't even BEGIN to fully describe what it really is. LEONARDO: I understand you prefer a more serious, noble leader Leo, which I do love. But one thing you seem to forget about 2012 Leo is that... he is a teenager. And acts like it. In my personal opinion, 2012 does the best job of making the turtles feel like teenagers who honestly have no business fighting these massive fights. It makes the moments where Leo is serious all the more powerful because you see him coming into his own as a leader rather than just already being one. Though I do agree that 2003 was more engaging on why he was chosen, I also believe it sorta led to a stunt in his character growth until his depression arc. I do also agree with your points about Don and Mikey being treated as inferior to Raph and Leo in 2012, that was pretty lame. But also, that point about Karai. How does her being Leo's sister give their relationship less weight? Unless you mean romantically, which yeah obviously it does, but why does it NEED to be romantically? I also don't think the voice actor change should be much of a factor. Granted, I personally didn't like the voice he had for the last chunk of season 2, but I did like Seth Green more. Especially given they provide an in-story reason for the change. And they only changed the voice actor because the original guy had some drama around him. RAPHAEL: In my personal opinion, his voice and design aren't really important factors to note. Sure, one may be more appealing to an individual, but I don't think it makes the show better or worse. I personally like both for what they offer. I do agree with the Casey dynamic, though, and to an extent the Mikey dynamic. Not so much with him saying one liners. Like I don't really care one way or another if he does or not. DONATELLO: I know it may seem dumb that this is the segment I have no problems with since it just so happens to give the point to 2012, but I firmly believe that 2012 Don is the best Don in TMNT history. And keep in mind, I do still prefer 2003 overall compared to 2012, but there are things I believe this show did better. Don is one of them. We pretty much agree completely here. MICHELANGELO: I mostly agree here, but I do think I personally would've given 2003 the point here. It mostly comes down to two things. 2003 making him occasionally annoying or 2012 making him constantly stupid. Mikey isn't really my favorite in any show, but while I don't hate either one of these two, I do personally find 2003 Mikey more enjoyable most of the time. SPLINTER: Again, I do completely agree here. 2012 Splinter is my all time favorite character in TMNT history. His design is perfect, his voice is perfect, his fighting style, his humor, his wisdom, his death, his history. Everything about him beats 2003 in mu personal opinion. Not to say 2003 was bad. His sense of humor is always unexpected and even though he is kicked down more often, he is very clearly very skilled and wise and can kick some ass. There's only two things I legit dislike about him. His voice, though I could eventually get used to it, and the whole rat origin. I never liked this origin purely because of the idea of a rat being able to mimic and comprehend the moves of a human to become a ninja master. SHREDDER: I do agree that 2003 is overall more enjoyable to watch, but a few things here. First, I don't think the burn scars are meant to make him look intimidating. They're just a scar. A wound representing how his relationship with Splinter ended. It's just a design choice meant to tell his story. I do agree 2003 is more intimidating, but I think you undersell just how well Shredder's story is told. REALLY compare it to 2003. He's a cold, calculating, charismatic leader, but at the same time, that's it. He has a public appearance and a battle appearance. The public image is pretty cool, always feeling in control and at ease even in the most savage of circumstances, but it's just the act, really. His true self is just bent on conquering the world and killing the turtles. There's no real complexity to his character in terms of personality, origin, and character development. That said, another thing I do prefer with him is his punishments. 2012 always says he'll punish his men for failure, but rarely follows through. 2003 just flat out does it. Sometimes with no warning. APRIL: While I do mostly agree here, I actually think that her behavior towards Don in the love triangle bullshit and her just happening to be a half mutant brings her down below 2003 for me. Don't get me wrong, I like that they do more different stuff with her story, I just wish it was told better and didn't kinda come out of nowhere. But I do love the amount of time spent putting her on par with the turtles and developing her powers. CASEY: Yyyyeah... I liked 2012 Casey at the time, but damn he is difficult to watch nowadays... I love Josh Peck, but his voice just does not work as Casey in my personal opinion (I realize I am making a lot of comments about voices despite saying voices shouldn't really determine if something is good or not. And I do still stand by that. But that doesn't mean I don't prefer some over others) OTHER VILLAINS (and onward): Yeah, I mostly have nothing to say here. I don't mind Bradford for his first episode and after he becomes Rahzar, but in terms of all the ones you talked about, I mostly agree with all of them. And I think the animation, music, art style, and whatnot are all just a personal preference thing that I mostly agree with. The only thing I disagree with being certain character designs. I know Leatherhead wasn't mentioned, but I do prefer his 2012 design. And I have no problems with the 2012 turtle designs. They look like teenagers and each have some variety to their body types rather than all looking the exact same. I would also like to know what you think of the villains you didn't explicitly call out. Because I do genuinely like a good chunk of them.

Happy 20th Anniversary to 2003 incarnation! Oh, and I'm on 2003 side of the argument.

I feel like you didn't really give a chance to understand 2012 Leo, Raph and Shredder there's more to them, Leo wanted to be a Leader and he based his Leader mannerisms off of characters in shows he likes to watch which helps him come off as a Younger and more Geeky version of Leo and less as a boring one note Leader that 2003 can "ONLY IN SOME EPISODES" fall into. But we see Leo grow and BECOME The Leader In Blue, we see him mature and become a Leader of his own and by the end, he takes on Splinter's role as a Sensei to protect his family. In 2003 we see Leo going through the struggles of being a Leader but in 2012 we see Leo BECOME the Leader and also go through the struggles. And while yes in Season 1 Splinter picking him is played off for laughs, in the episode of Season 4 where Splinter dies, he tells Leo WHY he was chosen to be the Leader which feels very satisfying and rewarding for those have been watching all the way through. 2003 is great but personally I find 2012's Younger and more Insecure version of Leo to be better. I could go on with why 2012 Raph and 2012 Shredder is great but I already spoke a lot about Leo. Great video though, keep up the good work.

im 2003. the reason is first the animation ive watch all 2012 but the character designs is so bad in my opinion I could not stop think about in all the seasons ive just got that im 10 years old vibe from them and not on a good way like ben 10. stories are really weak to in 2012 and I always felt like after season I saw the same thing again and again special with the fight scenes. I just say that 2012 tmnt not are for me, normally I don’t feel like shows like tmnt are for kids too but 2012 did it really obvious and Mickey is my favorite character and his just annoying all the time I now hes the youngest but his more like a 3 year old all the time. i grew up with both shows and have always loved them dearly, but i gotta say, in my opinion the 2003 show was better in terms of storytelling, characters and just the way they handled the show in general. 2012 felt a bit confusing in the last 2 seasons, and while fast forward and btts werent as good as the first 5 seasons of 2003, they were still okay and and watchable and were not too confusing. i didn't like how they dumbed mikey down in 2012, even though i love that mikey a lot and he did have a few epic moments, and i didnt like how the rest of them constantly belittled him, made fun of him and were occasionally really aggressive towards him (mainly raph) for no reason. sure, there were a lot of moments like that in 2003 as well, but it was mostly when mikey annoyed and teased them on purpose, therefore pretty much deserved. i also dont like how they made donnie's personality mostly revolve around april and how creepy and stalkerish they made him, kinda like marinette from miraculous ladybug. the guy literally ditched his brothers on a mission when april called him (and earlier in the same episode she hated him and didnt want anything to do with him or his brothers, but as soon as shes in danger she remembers the turtles). speaking of april, i also dont like how they handled her... like how the hell did she become a full fledged kunoichi in like. 2 seasons when it took the turtles themselves 15 years???? and her psychic abilities are also very weird, how did she learn to master them in less than a season??? and the whole situation with leo and karai felt super awkward. not to mention the plot holes and unfinished stories, like the one with timothy aka mutagen man for example.... anyways, as much as i love 2012 (and i love it ALOT), it had alot more flaws than the 2003 version in my opinion, which is why i think the 2003 series was better.

I prefer the 03 show for variety of reasons: Characters: I'd say, aside from Splinter, every character from 03 show is superior. Leo from 12 is certainly good, but Leo from 2k3 is so damn good, genuinely might be my favorite version of the character. I love his arc throughout the show, it especially shines in season 4. Donatello individually is good from 12, but I hate his weird boner for April, that love triangle is so wack. 03 Don, whilst the least developed turtle by far, is still a very level-headed, mature nerd who is fun to watch. With Mikey, it's not even a contest. I HATE 2012 Mikey, he acts like a fucking infant. 2k3 Mikey, while immature, doesn't come across as dumb but rather too emotional and lazy, but he can be fucking terrifying when shit gets down. Season 4 episode Grudge Match shows this brilliantly, where Mikey has to fight for his life after the match has been rigged and after his family is threaten, he beats the living shit out that brute in couple of seconds basically. I love that version of Mikey. Ralph however is pretty close, but I still slightly prefer his 03 counterpart, mostly because of the voice. As I've established, Splinter from 2012 is better, I'll give it that. April and Casey on the other hand absolutely SUCK in 2012 show, I don't get why did they make them so young for no reason. They are just annoying and static, they don't develop really. April and Casey from 03 however are stellar. Their romance is built up so naturally, as a background element and the show ends with them getting married (which is easily the best episode from the last season). Even the villains are superior in 03. Let's start with Shredder who is by far the most recognizable TMNT villain. You could make an argument that 2012 Shredder is more complex, and whilst I don't necessarily disagree, I find 03 Shredder way more interesting. 2012's Shredder's whole motivation is a petty lustful vendetta and he has devoted his entire life basically attempting to murder Splinter over it. That IS interesting, but what he actually does in the show is very underwhelming. He kills Splinter like three times which completely knocks the wind out of it. Ch'rell, whilst evil for the sake of evil, is probably as good as you can get from a solely evil villain. He's a god damn space terrorist, what is there not to like? With 03 Ch'rell, he felt unstoppable whilst 2012 Shredder felt like the show avoided his inevitable demise. The only time where I thought Ch'rell's revival was uncalled for was when he survived the utrom bomb at the end of Secret Origins, but every other time, it was justified. By the time Shredder becomes a mutant in 2012 show, I just completely stopped giving a shit about him. 2k3 show killed Ch'rell at the perfect time, as they introduced new villain, not only to the show, but to the mythos, speaking of which; Bishop in 2003 is one of the best characters and easily the best aspect of Fast Forward. He starts as a shady corporate, xenophobic government agent who is immortal after aliens have experimented on him. What separates him from Ch'rell is that he genuinely believes what he's doing is just. He "protects the Earth" through his twisted definition. But after being saved by an alien after an accessible opportunity for revenge, he realizes that perhaps his world-view was out of wack. He realizes that Earth can't defend itself alone due to lack of recourses, so he solely becomes responsible for the utopian civilization where literally every type of alien is welcome. 2012 Bishop is... like a generic enemy type for Kraangs, but he's a good guy from start and... he doesn't really do a lot. Baxter is also a highlight from the show. He starts off as a narcissistic, ambitious brilliant evil scientist who gets mutilated by Ch'rell for every failure, yet he still doesn't quit the job since he's so damn prideful. When he gets rid of Shredder and is just a brain in the jar trying to do something as innocent as making a functional body and it turns out to be a disaster, it's when he completely shifts. Up until then, Baxter was an opportunist, but he becomes so fucking done with everything after that episode. FF only expands on this in which remains my favorite episode of FF, Head of State. I like that Baxter has a legitimate, confirmed good ending. Baxter in 2012 show is basically a fucking joke, and the body mutilation was already kind of a running gag in the 03 (as fucked up as that sounds), but this Baxter solely exists just to get slapped around. When he becomes the fly, his personality is as static as ever. In fact all the villains in 2012 show become static after the mutation. I thought Bradford and Xever were good inclusions TILL they mutated. I really liked their human versions, but when they mutated, their character development was at all time stop. Hun on the other hand is a good character on his own. First off, he has that personal rivalry against Casey, then when he was working for the Shredder, he had the beef with Karai since she started overtaking his position and he got so butthurt to the point where BAXTER became his buddy, a guy who literally is a brain because of him. But when he finds out that Shredder was an alien slug attempting to conquer earth, his entire view of him changes, he starts working alone, but since he's learnt some stuff from Ch'rell, he turns Purple Dragons who were originally nothing more than a typical gang, into a genuine criminal organization stealing from the government and shit. Hun in the 2012 is... just a... Bruce Lee ripoff I guess? Whatever. In my opinion, even Karai from 2012 show sucks. 03 Karai KNOWS that Shredder is a shitstain, how could you not, she constantly tries to tell him his lack of honor, but he's a piece of shit so he obviously doesn't care. She's at the tight spot since she wants to be honorable, but she can't bring herself to betray her father figure. The show balances her dynamic with helping everyone to a certain extent. She spares turtles, but still goes along with Shredder so he mostly gets what he wants. She's quite unsure what to do till turtles finally get rid of Shredder. She was brainwashed all her life and was in denial about the Shredder and when he finally gets taken care of, she goes into a similar depression state Leo went through. She took the mantle herself until a certain point where she redeemed herself when the demon moafaka came back to life. Karai from 2012 takes like 30 something episodes to be convinced that Shredder isn't the nicest fella there is, and when that happens she mutates so they spend a whole season finding and curing her. Shredder finds her first, brainwashes her with some dumbass worms so they spend another couple of episodes convincing her that the Shreddo is quite a mean fellow and then she hardly shows up again. 2012 is at it's best when it does the smaller scale episodes imo, but these long ass storylines just don't work imo, it's way too slow and unrewarding unlike 2003 which is stellar in that department, at least for the first 4 seasons. Seriously though, first four seasons of 2k3 are GODLY. Season 5 is good but I have some issues with it. Season 6 and 7 are mostly flawed and uninteresting, plus way too child-friendly, but aren't god awful I thought

Personally I prefer the 2012 Turtles over the 2003 Turtles. I feel like the 2003 Turtles take themselves way too goddamn seriously to a point where it is honestly just distracting. The designs and personalities of the 2003 Turtles don't really feel like teenagers to me they feel like adults whereas the 2012 Turtles they're smaller and they all act like teenagers you have little things like them playing games with each other during training playing video games and watching cartoons together and they actually feel like brothers in the 2012 series. The 2003 series to me they never really felt like brothers they felt like four assholes that were just on a team together. Also personally I feel like Michelangelo and Donatello being the weaker Turtles actually make sense for their characters Michelangelo rarely takes anything seriously and Donatello focuses more on his gadgets and Technology whereas Leo and wrath are Rivals physically that keep pushing each other to do better in their training also I like the fact that the 2012 series actually has them speaking Japanese which is kind of important considering splinter is Japanese and so are ninja

I feel like this video was very unfair torwards 2012 and really biased torwards 2003 show. Most of your tmnt videos is you talking about the 2003 show so I can see the bias and favoritism coming from there and that you mostly grew up with one show, another KZfaqr who did a TMNT show comparison mentioned how Nostalgia and Bias is something you gotta watch out for when making these types of videos and I feel like you might've fallen in that. This is a little noticeable in the theme song section but it's very clear in the characters section when you talk about Shredder, Leo and Raph. They are extremely well written but you make them come off as bland and one note characters which is FAR from the truth. 2003 does have great and badass characters but the writing and characters are so great in 2012, you acknowledge it a lot in 2003 but barely even touch it 2012, in the end leading to an easy score for 2003 cause you took some of the best things about 2012 for granted so 2003 gets points. Also there's a couple of things you got wrong with 2012 too regarding Mikey and Donnie. I could go on but you probably get the point by now. This was an unfair comparison and mostly biased torwards 2003, I'm not frustrated that you chose 2003 to be the winner, I'm frustrated with how it won. Despite the favoritism and bias this was still a good attempt at making a comparison video, please continue working on these types of videos and keep working hard. Cause I can see a lot of potential in them.

I prefer the 2012 show entirely because it was the first show that i could tell the turtles apart outside of their mask color and voices. No seriously, that's it.
