One of the true originals - and keeping it a lot more staid than he normally did! A true showman, one of the real bad boys of rock, and still shakin' it into his 80s. He only died a few months ago - RIP.

Fun fact: whole Lotta Shakin goin on was actually written by a man named Dave "Curlee" Williams. Jerry Lee Lewis used to get a lot of his inspiration from african American night clubs and dive bars back in the 1950s. He was so inspired by their Style of music and performing, it’s what helped mold him into the performer he eventually became, a lot of the credit he gave to the black community for inspiring him. I've never heard this before. I agree with your opinions. It's very obvious that the music back in the day was all about having fun. It seems that that era simply had so much joy. People just having a great time. It's something that somehow we have seemed to have lost. We need to get it back.

Yeah, I'm 80 now and was a young teen when he first came onto the scene. This was a really tamed down version of his original shows. Brings back a certain new vitality to my old bones. I gotta tell ya! LOL Quite the showman in spite of what a lot of parents thought. LOL

Glad to hear you mention the fact that rock 'n" roll was meant to be danced to. Disco gets a bad rap but one of its positive characteristics is its danceability which to me in some ways is far more redeeming than more 'serious' music. You should check out Fats Domino and Little Richard as two other great performers who put the piano in the rock 'n' roll spotlight.

I saw these greats of Rock and Roll when they came to Melbourne, Australia, in the late 1980s. It was one of the most amazing nights of music and nostalgia. Each artist played for about 20 to 30 minutes.

I got to see him live in the sixties. He was unbelievably good!

I remember seeing Jerry Lee Lewis as the headliner in a Rock-and-roll show in Norfolk, VA in 1961 when I was in the Navy (big mistake). He took his jacket off and tossed it into the crowd. One lady in the audience said, "Take it all off." He said, "You stick around for the next show and you'll see more." A large segment of the audience applauded. He blew the doors off the auditorium. BTW, in this show was Ruth Brown, The Coasters and others I don't remember. Needless to say "The Killer" was the most memorable.

Ah, a hometown musician for me..I was born/raised/live in Shreveport, Louisiana..Jerry Lee Lewis, along with his fellow famous musicians, his cousins Mickey Gilley (famous country star) and Jimmy Swaggert (famous preacher/televangelist), grew up in Ferriday Louisiana..all three were born with genius musical talent and all three could play piano beautifully. I believe only Jimmy Swaggert is still alive and he still plays piano beautifully. Their life/back stories from abject poverty to fame is quite the read and a few books and movies with details are interesting if you wanted to dig deeper.

I switched to independent groups in the 90's. Lot of dancing, jumping, friendly mosh pits. It was all about having a good time. Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, Bad Fish, Social Distortion, Less Than Jake. Punchline etc.

He wasn't nicknamed the Killer because he played by the rules. Someone said that he played the piano with every pointed appendage on his body except one, and using that one would have gotten him arrested. Believe it or not, he was evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's cousin, and Jerry Lee's sacred music was as powerful as the secular stuff.

So hot in its time (late 50s), that now, 60+ yrs later, "Whole lotta shakin' goin' on" is still widely used as a general pop culture catch phrase (in digital media, TV, news reports, movies, etc.). The power of music.

I saw Jerry Lee Lewis in 1976 with my Mom and sister at a dinner club in Southwest Ohio. It was fantastic. My sister and I got the chance to see him again at a casino in Indiana in the early 2000's and he still put on quite a show. He is a first cousin to Mickey Gilley and evangelist Jimmy Swaggert.

My stepfather got to see Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley two of the best rock and roll and country western piano players ever they both did their sets and at the end for the encore they push the pianos so they face each other it was three song set for each six songs all together last song was Great Balls Of Fire where both litter pianos on fire as they pounded out the song, that would've been some show.

Part of the 1990's grunge and depressing music was the disenfranchisement after 12 years of Reagan/Bush. A lot of the (American) younger population was tired of the old trickle-down nonsense. That's what I found from talking to a lot of people. Thank you for doing this song by "the Killer!"

When I was kid I go to see him at Lanier Music Land in Gainesville GA, my father's cousin owned the place and we got to see concerts for free. That night Jerry Lee threw the piano seat into the crowd!

There was a town which scheduled Elvis Presley (who was thought a bad influence of the young) to play. The promoter said he would get Jerry Lee Lewis instead and the town fathers said Elvis would be okay. Jerry was a bad boy. Among other things, he married his 13 year old cousin. He was scheduled to performed before Chuck Berry once. He played "Great Balls of Fire" after pouring gasoline on the piano and igniting it. Upon leaving the stage, he told Berry, "Follow that"

I think the venue was in Rome in 1989...I saw the identical show, with one or two changes of performers, in Melbourne, that same year...before the Rome concert which was entitled LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL...Jerry performed a whole lot more in Rome, than he did in Melbourne...This version was FORTY TWO years after the release of the original [1957]...AMAZING!! I am 85.5 years 'young'...born 1938. I was READY for what was gonna hit me around 1955, and I'm STILL READY!! I can burn-up the floor...BELIEVE ME!!
