Here is perhaps the FIRST in-depth view of a low production run 1987 Bally Midway SPY HUNTER 2--the infamous sequel to the huge classic Spy Hunter. Todd Tuckey shows you all about how the game was made and works...and it really isn't that bad after all!! Watch and see for yourself!

This game is an underappreciated classic. And as most who love it would say, it requires patience to fully master this one, which is why the name of the achievement/trophy for Spy Hunter II on Midway Arcade Origins is called ''Patience of a Saint'' which is earned by just playing the game for 15 minutes straight.

+figment1988 :-) Playing the LEFT player, you have to use your left hand to shift...so its somewhat uncomfortable...right side is fine.

I find that playing this with a GRS Star Wars yoke for player 1 and a NEGCON for player 2 works pretty well. The Star Wars yoke has 4 buttons in the same place as the arcade and if you hook it to your control panel you can use the right joystick for the shifter. The Midway arcade treasures version shows you what gear you are in. Thanks for this video. It really helped me set up and understand the game better.

I just bought a WWF WRESTLEMANIA arcade using the SH2 cabinet. Now I know why there’s a big old empty piece of plastic, it’s where the steering wheels go. Now I feel like I found some treasure. It even has the Bally’s midway paint exactly like this video!

Thats such an odd cabinet to convert too...but perhaps they had trouble with the controls, etc and decided it was time to rip out the SPy Hunter stuff. I wonder if they kept it!

Are the Sounds Good board and Cheap Squeak Deluxe (music board in Spy Hunter, also known as the Artificial Artist board) the same, aside from using the same 68K CPU? There’s also the Sounds Deluxe board, which was used in Bally’s late 80s pinball games. It also used a 68K CPU. Dungeons and Dragons, Heavy Metal Meltdown, and Escape from the Lost World used that board.

Todd, what's the worst video game sequel in your opinion? Loved your Spy Hunter II video and so far it's my number one worst video game sequel, but you've inspired me to play it and give it another whirl on my PS3 Midway Arcade Origins compilation.

+psjedi1 Not many sequels to compare to...I would really need to evaluate more sequesl first. SPy Hunter 2 was somewhat better than I remembered back then...but I was also looking at the cash box...it made next to nothing back then...but in a free play arcade, I think it would develop some fans....who can keep playing it to start to master the controls.
@psjedi1

I only recall Vanguard 2 and Time Pilot '84 being bad sequels in my opinion off the top of my head. I will say I do refer the Spy Hunter and Spy Hunter 2 games the equivalent of the movie Caddyshack and Caddyshack 2.....Caddyshack being my favorite comedy and Caddyshack 2 being a horrible sequel.

I think we all have our obscure favorites. Mine is Escape from the Planet of Robot Monsters. I'm sure the new owner will be happy with his Spy Hunter II, but much like the other commenters in this thread, I did not like this game. I was super excited the first time I saw it in the arcade, but after playing, I don't think I fed it more than one token. Although, watching your video made me realize that I never considered the vendor's perspective. I can't imagine what it must have been like to drop thousands of dollars on these games and then when you test play, you realize it's a dud. What do you do? I'd guess you try to put it in a suitable location. It seems like people would play anything at a location like a laundromat because there's nothing else to do. I don't suppose you could send them back to the manufacturer and ask for a refund.

I always wonder who has their hand on their chin at the factory going, 'Yah this'll work.' what a fail this game was. Honestly they probably could have just used the exact same original game and just added some different enemies, maybe change up the weapons or even better added some buttons on the 'dashboard' (caltrops, flamethrower, mines) in addition to the triggers and switches, add some new zones to the driving experience. IIRC they eliminated a helicopter sequence in SH for being too ambitious for the time, they could have added it in S2. Heck I wouldn't have changed anything graphical, just built on the original. Graphics hadn't progressed that much by the time S2 hit but there was more experimentation with perspective views. SH was better as a top down. Woulda coulda shoulda...
