Like many Vets these days, Steve Russell was very frustrated that he or any of the soldiers under his command couldn't actually bring back captured rifles from their campaigns overseas, unlike previous generations of American infantrymen. So if you can't bring back rifles, maybe the next best step is to make them? This is exactly what Steve did with Two River Arms, a company in Oklahoma City that makes excellent copies of Iraqi Tabuks from Yugo M72 parts kits, complete with Iraqi markings in Arabic and all. The niche that this company fills is extremely unique and small for that matter, very unlike most any Kalashnikov producing companies in the AK business. They are uniquely tied into the conflicts of our era that directly connects the small arms from those conflicts.

It's even sillier than you think. Two examples: As one of the first units to occupy Tallil Air Base in southern Iraq, we came upon a number of ZPU-4 (towed, quad AA guns) that we actually integrated into our perimeter until the infantry battalion showed up that was supposed to defend us. A few weeks later, we got two of them, plus a British 25-pounder from An Nasiriyah, back to Arifjan, our base in Kuwait. I spent the next nine months trying to do the paperwork to get them home to a military museum, but to the best of my knowledge, they are still at Arifjan, because it was not politically correct to capture and keep Iraqi stuff. Second example: At the beginning of the war, the idiots in charge banned AK bayonets from being sent home. Not only were these the same bayonets you could find for twenty bucks in Shotgun News, but Iraqis were selling them to our Soldiers in-country. (Knife, Meester, knife!") Since US Customs wasn't as politically correct as the armed forces, and didn't ban AK bayonets, we sent ours home by DHL from Kuwait City.

This is why we need to change the law so vets can bring them back, regardless of bolt, semi, full auto
@DynamiteBarcTrooper
@DynamiteBarcTrooper 6 жыл бұрын
Terran499 I'm all for them bringing back semi and bolt but you do realize allowing them to bring back full auto would throw the system into chaos and completely go against the 1986 law banning new importation. It would be a pain in the ass to register all of those and keep the paperwork. It would also be a little dangerous with the vets that come back with severe PTSD owing full auto rifles

Indeed, don't they say a country is only as free as the gun-laws? (Which is true, because disarmed citizens are easy to oppress, while a fully armed population can't be oppressed - especially if the military is not brainwashed from birth and will probably disobey orders to fire on civilians!)

I just got back my Romanian RPK that I had these guys build for me and I’m amazed by the quality of their work. These guys elevate AK building to an art form. The fit and finish are beautiful and the bluing is exquisite. It instantly became my favorite rifle in my collection.

My dad almost brought home a few Ak's from Iraq. Including a heavy barrel model(not an rpk). When he was leaving the marines they built fake bottoms to their crates and took apart the Ak's. Some ass the forklift put the fork through the crate and a barrel stuck out so then they measured the bottoms. Such bullshit too.

I actually have a Two Rivers Arms PM md.63 Yugoslav War build and I absolutely love it. Not only is the finish on the non-imported parts perfectly matching, but the actual riveting jobs, headspacing, sight alignment, and all that stuff is perfectly done as well which makes them a diamond in the rough as far as American-built AKs go.

Agreed - for me as a German this shouldn'd have any relevance, but IMHO the US gun-laws (of the past!) made it possible to keep a lot of military history which would be destroyed in other countries because it can't be surplused! Sadly this changed for the US, too with all those anti-gun-laws banning the registration of new machine-guns, the assault weapons ban (thankfully that is gone now!) etc. and even worse state legislation! I mean as a liberal atheist I would like to live in one of those states (if I had to live in the US!), but my love for guns would make that impossible because I hate being restricted especially since those laws violate the constitution "...the right to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed..." - Yeah and what are laws doing ATM? They are infringing, hard!

It's not just about taking war trophies home. This is all to make soldiers more disconnected with the idea of private firearm ownership. If you go on any military fort or base they don't want soldiers having access to firearms, whether on their person or in their possession. We have soldiers, people willing and able to fight with firearms, unable to defend themselves while in the States and some have died because of it.

Renaissance Jack That’s not true you can own firearms on base but you have to register them on base and if you live in the barracks it has to be in the armory like the likelihood of getting shot at the px is very improbable (but still could happen) then say off base somewhere where if u live off base you are totally within your rights to own one just not bring it on base i bought a firearm and i live on base so i keep it at a friends house

Not sure of the rules now, but in 02-03 we were able to bring back captured weapons as long as they were in the curio/relic class. I have a 1886 Lebel hanging in my living room and I know guys that brought back 1898 Mausers and other "old" bolt actions. Yea, semi-auto's like the SKS and full autos like the AK were still off limits. Even M1 Garands, and I found one in Afghanistan, were off limits which to me seemed idiotic.

We're really living in the age of cowardice. Everyone's scared of anything that even slightly resembles a weapon. Just last year airport security confiscated a mini multi-tool (the size of thumb) that my aunt from Germany gave me close to a decade ago all because it has a well-used blade no longer than 4/5 of a toothpick. Now before anyone calls me an idiot for bringing a tiny knife through an airport please know that I've been travelling for nearly 10 years with that thing in my bag located in the exact same place every single time and was never stopped until last year.

And even worse are retired cops who do nothing more than sit on their old butts as they grow fatter, tell lies about how they defended the citizens and their rights and wait for the mail man to hand deliver their pension checks that are cashed with funds stolen straight from the paychecks of their friends, family members, their own children and neighbors. What work do they do that they still deserve a check for not lifting a finger? Why don't they grow some stones and go shakedown the taxpayers face to face for themselves instead of having the current generation of piglets do it for them?

I know TFB is all "gun, not politics", but I'd be really interested in a history of how and when the policy changed forbidding bringbacks. I know it was after the Vietnam War, because I've read there was then still an official process for bringing back obtained rifles. Is it still possible to send back everything but the serialized part? I'd probably try to send a firearm back in pieces and perhaps get the receiver smuggled in separately if possible. I also wouldn't mind seeing TFB get a little political and call this stupid anti-gun policy out for the idiotic bullshit that it is. Thanks for this video on what I think is an important and underappreciated subject. Much of the knowledge we have of military weapons comes from veteran bringbacks, but the flow of foreign-made firearms into the country has been cut off and no longer do Americans have access to contemporary modern firearms from around the world.

I'd think it's pretty much the Hughes Amendment of 1986. You could no longer register new fully automatics. Even military sidearms are problematic since the Soviets used a bunch of fully automatic handguns. Where are the troops going store their trophies for the months of time it takes to NFA them? How do you get your home LEO to sign off on them if you're deployed? How do you deal with soldiers from a state that allows NFA items who's stationed in a states that bans all NFA items? Likely too big a hassle for the military which has other priorities.

Jim Hart you should be able to get an ak from a gun shop. But then again, they made pistol grips illegal because they look too much like someone in the movies shooting from the hip.

why cant they bring them home any more? Also how are the ATF (& others) able to tell the difference between an original (not legal) weapon & one that has been made by this company? is there any chance one of these weapons could be confiscated mistakenly in the belief it was brought back from a conflict zone? thanks

Slightly similar. In Afghanistan 2002 I found an few cool pieces of exploded ordnance from the Russian occupation in the 1980’s. My Chief wouldn’t let’s me keep them or ship them home. Fast forward 8 months back in the states. I go to his office and guess what’s decorating his desk.....bingo. POS!

I know an old man who brought his .50 caliber sniper rifle back from war. He sold it for $15,000. He also killed over 50 people with it. He has also killed 5 people with mercury. Scariest old man I know.... he has no heart.
