We all want that big fish, the great fight to dream and brag about, the broad silvery side that will keep us going thru the winter. When it all happens, the line tightens up and we realize there is a really big salmon on the end of our line we all need that some extra tips. - Its all about the experience, several thousands of salmon with 20 over 40 lbs is respect! Follow Mikael on some hardcore salmon fights and let him share his experience...

In late 1980s I guided a beautiful young lady from Denmark in the Pacific Northwest!! Her dream was to catch a Steelhead in an " unfished" area with no one else present! So I helped her to do this, and she caught both a Summer Steelhead and a King Salmon!!

Learned a lot. Don't like how you let the fish sit on the rocks not able to breath for such a long time. Especially have such hard fights.

Looked like the first salmon had no adipose fin - was it hatchery or fish farm in origin? Same for the salmon at 13:25 and 14:56 and perhaps a few of the others.

Mikael, I'm pretty sure, I saw a Tag on the anterior side of the Dorsal Fin. Did you tag it before releasing or was it already there? I saw you fishing ASR in Russia, they have some AMAZING Sea-Trout & Atlantic Salmon!!

He plays his fish far to hard and his rod is far to low most of the time during the fight. What you don't see is how many times he gets broken or just tears the flies out of the fishes mouth. And before any body asks, yes I am experienced a ghillie of forty years.

Hi Neil, well I know I play them hard and sure I brake some off but not because I play them too hard! I fish big fish in big rivers. with your rod at 45 degrees angle you can press max aprox 2,5 kilo (if you press very hard) that's simply not enough where I fish. I think more fish are lost because people play them way too soft.. but that's a personal thought. I am quite experienced too.. I have taken several thousand salmon, more than 250 over 30 lbs and 21 over 40... It's OK with different opinions and we will never get a final answer, that's one of the great things with fishing Atlantic salmon on the fly. Cheers! / Mikael
