What is it about her? From deadpan to glimmering imp. Vocally limited tonal beauty. Hardworking but seemingly effortless. She’s one of the all time greats!

Sylvia Fine Kaye did a Broadway-themed series for PBS way back when. I was a kid in Utah and watched them. I remember this installment vividly. Ms. Kaye said Elaine had traveled from her home in London [this was in Elaine's London period] just to sing this song for us on that TV program. I had never heard of Elaine Stritch before this, but I sure knew her after this. She performs brilliant: the violence lies only slightly below the surface.

So far as I can tell, this comes from a PBS program entitled Sylvia Fine Kaye's Music Comedy III, circa 1985.

My heart belongs to Miss Segal with her rendition. We have the luck of a video with Miss Stritch. We don’t have a video of Miss Segal’s performance of this song. 😢. Our loss.

Have you heard Mary Martin's completely sweet, deadpan version with Rodgers at the piano? Either way, some of the most brilliant rhyming in a comedy song. wreck to me / appendectomy patricide / mattress side Worthy of Cole Porter, Noel Coward, etc. How is it that this has not been recommended to me until 2024?

I love this. I never get enough of Elaine Stritch's underrated, interesting singing. Thanks! Can anybody re-post an old video of her singing "You Took Advantage of Me" on some old TV show? I really want to see it, but it's no longer anywhere on KZfaq.

I love Elaine Stritch. She's great and she's exceedingly funny here. However, for a completely different take, there is the legendary Mary Martin's, who underplays this to great effect, letting the lyrics play against her love song delivery, while Richard Rogers accompanies her.

@jimh23 you are obviously too young and inexperienced to appreciate true greatness. yes, mary testa can be good - or perhaps good enough - but she is not great and will be forgotten as soon as she has left us. stritch will endure. you need to read a book about the theatre - i suggest you begin with every book that ethan mordden has ever written. DO THIS NOW! (mary testa indeed - jeez1)
