Fun Fact: 0:42 -0:50 - That brown structure with windows you see at the right of the screen was Captain Bryant's (M.Emmet Walsh) office in 1982's Blade Runner. It was built specifically for that movie and still remains there today in Union Station as a cleaning supply closet.

I can't say enough positive things about this film. It endures so well...even 25 years (!) after it came out. One reason I loved this film is that it was the first movie (that I know of) that did NOT glamorize Los Angeles. It showed its seedy underbelly and grit...and I freakin' love that!

In an interview director William Friedkin said the chase scenes were the last with William Petersen and John Pankow to be filmed because he felt the degree of risk was so high they could be seriously injured or killed.

Peterson said that fact wasn't lost upon them, either. There have been deaths on movie sets, so any paranoia about doing it would be healthy. Beyond the deaths in 1982 on set of Twilight Zone: The Movie, one of the motorcycle stuntmen in 1981's The Road Warrior broke his leg when he flipped off his bike. The guy did 3-4 full body turns in the air when he hit something and that part is on film, but the part where he landed and broke his leg isn't.

When I studied in South Africa from 84 to 87 my friends once kidded me about American's craze for car chases. They didn't get the appeal. I remember telling them about To Live and Die in LA, which had just come out. My point was that car chases could be incredibly good. The whole film matches it. Most people grasp (at least instinctively) that going the wrong way down the LA freeway was an allegory for Chance's entire approach to law enforcement. The criminal side of lawmen is timeless, going back to the sheriffs in the wild west, who often doubled as henchmen for cattle barons. This movie modernized and dramatized the combination of good and evil in law enforcement masterfully.

- the red palmtree is also like blood out of a bulletwound - the capitals LA with fire to indicate its a hot/dangerous city - the pounding dark synthesizer adds power to the bold fontset. - de distingtive orange sunset of LA The TLADILA track is a well balanced ballet of tough suburbs and depressing citylife. The piano and synthesizers emphesizes stopmotion city drama, the beat emphesizes exotic life , the flute gives neighbourhood feeling, guitars sound remorsefull. ..i get carried away :p

Unfortunately Chance was not wearing gloves so he's got his fingerprints on the briefcase and potentially on his sunglasses that fell off when trying to get into the briefcase. Both objects were left at the scene and will be recovered by the FBI when they retrieve Ling's body. It would make for a great subplot how either Chance was not ID'd from those fingerprints or was ID'd after certain events late in the movie. Still, great movie as released

Phonebook as well. Front cover, paper? Fingerprints on paper last forever. There was a former Iron Guard member named Valerian Trifa who was living in Ohio. The Iron Guard was a thug force allied to the Nazis in Romania. He denied being a member, but the FBI got a postcard he sent to Heinrich Himmler from German archives and had to create laser detection methods to scan for his prints w/o destroying the postcard and it came up positive. There was a 40 sthg year gap in the print and detection. Paper is the worst substrate for a criminal to put a print on.

Love this flick and have since the 90s when I first saw it, but the lads would've been screwed from Chance's fingerprints on the phonebook cover. Something they overlooked. His prints WOULD have been on file altho there was no comp database then obviously. No Codis. Still, the FBI would've done a psych profile on the perps, assumed they were or are in law enforcement at some level, and started searching his print. For the sake of the movie timeline, the FBI wouldn't have nabbed them before Chance was killed, but they would've gotten Vukovich eventually. That's all assuming Ruth the chic who told them about the sceme wouldn't have snitched after an arrest or somethin.

I have a modest proposal: all movies from the 80s should have their soundtracks remade and recorded over for DVD and TV. Easy thing to do. The theme songs like Heat is On can stay, but the background music they used is horrible, and makes those flicks ridiculously dated, even the best ones. Shoud start with Rain Man, 48 hours and Stakeout. Too bad you can do nothing for the clothes. Who's with me?
