To Model:Samples from volca sample - my 3 reasons for upgrading (talk & jam)

Elektron Model:Samples comes, KORG volca sample goes.
This kind of upgrade is not without pain but the wish list for a better (drum) sample processing instrument was too long to be ignored: more sample memory, faster transfer, better filter & FX, more sequencer steps, to name the major points. In the audio demo which starts at 5:50 I tried to highlight some of the particular strengths of the Model which set it apart from the volca, here with a slight focus on the sample processing possibilities. What you hear is the pure Model, no external EQ, compression or FX, and also no limiter. So you may need to dial the volume knob to your preferences. And if you like what you hear and see, don't forget to subscribe.

The new version of the Volca Sample has USB sample transfer (but it's more expensive too, now you can get two Volcas for one Model). Never the less, having just bought a Model:Cycles and absolutely loving it, I'm tempted to add the Model:Samples, even if I already own the new Volca. Working with the Elektron is just so easy and fun. The Volca can be my travel buddy, since it runs on batteries out-of-the-box (you can use a battery pack with the Model though).

I tried to love the Volca. But the more I performed with it, the more I couldn't live with the 31kHZ quality. Dynamically interesting spatial samples I would spend hours producing would become unnoticeable mush once put on the Volca. If you're making lofi hip hop, then more power to you. But it really became increasingly deflating witnessing robust monster samples enter the volca and instantly sound toy'ish.

I was looking into maybe getting a Volca sample (2) and maybe a volca bass or something but i might just go with just this one.. It looks like it can do all the things i'd want the volcas for, mostly for drum machine and some supporting melodies while i do my own playing on my synthesizer. The small size and portability of the volcas seemed like a fun extra, but this sounds pretty amazing, so i'll have to think about it some more

Thank you very much, the video is perfect, do you think that model cycles or samples can replace a circuit? and if true, which of the two, cycles or sample? I ask because apparently I made a wrong investment with my volcas when I was able to raise a little more money and buy something between the volcas and digitakt In many of the forums they comment that volcas is not a serious or durable instrument. I am not a professional musician, I am looking for something for my homestudio, something that is of better quality. I already have 5 volcas 1 bsp and a 1 novation launchkey mini mk3 , so what do you recommend? I think of model, novation, moog minitaur. TNX
@PeteMidi
@PeteMidi 3 жыл бұрын
I think, the circuit provides most value for the money, but because I like knobs for tweaking the sounds I prefer the electrons. But both models are completely different in terms of sound engines. Try to find out what kind of sound engine and user interface you would prefer.

I've had the Samples for awhile now. Originally got it for bigger projects. 6 banks with 16 pattern, of 128 steps per project is enough to work and record eclectically with enough space to save the good stuff. There are only the 6 tracks but with the sequencer you can assign different samples on individual trigs. Overall a lot of fun. Got it as a drum machine, but you can build whole songs with it.

What I want to know is that can the Model: Samples sample the sound at EXACTLY the same sound quality as the original? No colouration or filtering whatsoever. If it cannot, then it's junk. Many thanks! I also have a cheap Behringer guitar delay pedal. They're cheap, sound great and also run on batteries. Lots of guitar pedals do, not all though. I guess it's because of the utilized micro controler, in fact not the best hardware design, at least for a sampler...

I would be more interested if I hadn't plunged into MPE. Interesting note that the volca sample works with MPE based controllers the roli block actually will map to every midi channel on the volca beats so I use a roli block to finger drum my beats live. For me the battery on the volca is a big deal, also step jump is a big deal. However with the LFO on the model you can get really really close to the sound of 90s samplers like the ensoniq mirage and asr10.

Curious to hear more detail. So did you start with the melody and then create your own samples and then feed them to Model:Samples? ...or are these samples long live clips from the original that are then remixed. Cool tunes!

Hello Peter. Elektron Model or Korg Electribe?
@PeteMidi
@PeteMidi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, difficult question! The Electribe Sampler has some important advantages: 4(!)x voices and more than 2x tracks, SD-card storage expansion and sampling input (stereo!). But it only has less than half(!) of the sample RAM (overall sample length) and I prefer the user interface of the model (no parameter jumps or "catches"!). So far I have not used the full RAM capacity of the model, because I usually combine it with other gear (synths). Taking this into acount, I'm not completely sure if I would decide for the model again. Try to compare the workflows, they are rather different. The model is more a drum machine, the Electribe more of a "workstation". Hope this helps ...

The volca has one indispensable advantage - it has a “sound”. Ah yes, and the analog isolator on the master. It’s the best volca and future classic.
@PeteMidi
@PeteMidi 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's right, the volca has a unique sound, but whether I like it or not, is another question. The analog isolator is nice, but as it applies to all parts simultaneously, I only used it in rare cases.

@@PeteMidi All I can say is I love the Digitakt. I think once you have a chance to see what can be done with changing the sample on each step can do in terms of creating sound density. There are so many creative ways to use the sound engine in combination with the sequencer that I don't think I will run out of new ideas for a long time. I am curious to see how the model samples works for you, coming from a different workflow.

@Robert Syrett I understand why the Digitakt has so many fans, it's a very well-designed machine. For me, only the user interface wasn't that attractive. But some features of the Digitakt I really miss in Model, for example switching between different samples via midi control changes.
