Great question that I'm hearing all the time around me. It's quite simple if you do the math. For 1 replacement grip you get like 3-4 overgrips. But at the end, it's not about the money. It's about how often you get a new fresh grip for the same price. Look at this example. Replacement grip makes perfect sense for someone who doesn't play regularly. For these people, it's a great choice. But if you play every day and even competitive, you need perfect grip for every match. And that's the moment for overgrips. You can change it literally for every important match and it won't break your bank. So for the same price you get 4x times fresh grip rather than one replacement grip, that is getting constantly worse. It's not about the money at the end, but it's about the option of having fresh grip every time you need. And for me personaly, it's super fun to put it on the racket and makes me feel very comfortable and ready for every match. It's a ritual.

I use overgrips because they are easy to change (even during a match) and you can always have a fresh grip on there where replacement grips take longer to change

Harry, you made me realize that I am old school. I have used leather (yes, I like the feel of the HEAD pallets with leather) and covered with overgrip. You convinced me to try getting rid of them and using the HEAD hydrosorb pro grips. It has changed my game for the better. With the Replacement Grip I feel I don't have to grip the racquet as tightly and I play more relaxed. Thanks for this video.

Wilson Pro or Dunlop Super Tac for me in warmer months. Perfect balance of tack and sweat absorption. I discovered the Head Hydrosorb Pro on my new Extreme Tour and really like it. I can use only a replacement grip in the cooler months. When using a new replacement grip I don't use an over grip until I have about 10-15 hours on the replacement grip. It allows oil and dirt from your hand to get on the replacement grip so that when you do install an over grip then remove it, it won't stick to or peel away the replacement grip underneath. I too have strung and gripped many racquets over 32 years. I recommend not using an over grip until the new replacement grip gets a little worn in and dirty. There is nothing worse than when customers bring in old rotten grips to be replaced. Removing them is a pain and such a dirty job. So nasty! Players need to pay attention to their grips as much as their strings.

Earlier the Dunlop Max 200 G and Wilson 6.1 had Fairway Leather grips. Overgrips or Tournagrips those days were required but were rough. Then I switched to Babolat VS which lasted about 3 Hrs of play. But then their quality started detoriating and a very good product became available in HEAD Xtreme soft tacky overgrip that can last 12-15 hrs. Its necessary for me for reducing abrasions to the palm of the playing hand and callouses. A few spares are always there in the bag but usually it is OK till every re stringing. ANd looks great too. It is problem nowadays that base grips are very comfort\mushy for more or less competitive players if they use an overgrip too. So it's better feel without an overgrip. But any serious play is impossible with the only the base grip, especially in the wet conditions where after half an hour of play the racket jumps from the hands during the serve or FH. So there is a neccesity to use and change an overgrip. For better feel we have to use another overgrip or a leather base grip...
@WaltKurtz68
@WaltKurtz68 2 жыл бұрын
It's very simple, in Europe the biggest grip size usually is 4, which is just a tad too small for me. An overgrip solves that problem most of the times. Plus when it gets dirty (especially with the white ones) it's easier and cheaper to replace than a basegrip. That's why I use overgrips.

Doesn't it depend on your weather and your physiology? When I lived up north I used an overgrip because my hand sweats when I play, but I could use SuperGrap or Tourna just fine, and they lasted 3-4 hrs. I moved to FL, where the humidity is much worse, and SuperGrap get slippery in 10-15 min, and Tourna soaks through in about 20-30 min. I use Dunlop U Sweat (black), and change every 90 min in the winter, and every 30-45 min in the summer. I've tried, resin, chalk, sprays, wristbands, etc., and nothing seems to stop my hands from being wet in 90/90 temp/humidity. I see other people who's hands don't sweat like mine, and they don't need an overgrip at all. But I do. If I were just feeding balls, I didn't need to hold the racquet as securely, I wouldn't use an OG.

@tnthomas1954
@tnthomas1954 2 жыл бұрын
@@trujr5295 That's pretty much what I do, but I don't reuse after they're wet. After they've been wet the grip does not feel the same, even 2 days later when it's dried. We play for 90 min at a time (old guys). In the winter I can play the entire time with 1 racquet. In the spring and fall, 1-2 racquets. In the summer, 2-3. I normally carry 2-3 that are basically identical, and another 2-3 that are different in some way. It's just a hobby so it doesn't really matter. Most people I play with use only 1 racquet, and change the grip every year whether it needs it or not.

For me it depends on the racquet. If I’m using my APD, which stock has the regular full-size Syntec grip, I just use it, because it’s a fat, cushioned replacement grip. But if I’m using something (Like the RF97) that has a smaller, thinner stock grip I use an overgrip, with a preference towards the somewhat tacky.

I prefer to not use any overgrips. I have one exception and 1 other use of an ondergrip: Exception: if it is really hot steamy humid and i sweat too much, i put an overgrip on my racket to take it off half way the match for a fresh continuation. Other use: i cut an overgrip in half (half the length) and wrap that just around the butt of the racket to make that thicker (underneath the replacement grip). This improves my grip and that i can hold my racket very loosely with just 3 fingers and not lose my racket.

Pure rubbish. Using an overgrip has nothing to do with the era you're playing in. It's purley a matter of TASTE. Some love it, some don't. But, if we look at the trend on both the ATP and the WTA, we'll see that MOST professionals use an overgrip: easy to install, fresh grip any time you switch racquets, better quality than some replacement grips, choice of colors, and, for some, stg to do during changeovers(ref. Gasquet). And today's pros use a smaller grip that they like to customize to their favourite size.
