I don't hate EXE games, but Childhood.CUE and Green Mountain really shows how saturated they've been, because they're definitely a breath of fresh air from the usual tropes you find in the genre.

Heya, creator of Sonic 1 Prototype here, a funny thing about that game is that I specifically made it so that I could submit something to Luigikid's first exe challenge on a whim. I honestly don't consider it to be my best work and pretty generic, which makes it ironic that it's my most popular game, popular enough to make it into your video lol. The thing about Tails' name of "Alan" being the name of a victim of exe's is correct. Knuckles' name also changes to Dave and Robotnik's changes to Paul. X happily stuffs the souls of his victims into the game to torment them further, and just eventually noms the soul right out of the Sonic character shaped body when he finally gets bored, which is what he did to Robotnik/Paul. Alan is also the name of Tails in Sonic PC Port, which since it's also a project of JoeDoughBoi, is probably a good indicator if it being the same character.

Thanks for playing childhood.cue, it really means a lot, i have some things to say here. the sprite animation look it's on purpose, also a lot of this game was rushed because of deadline, i had 10 days to make the actual game (the 3d part), the 2d part looks a lot more polished because it wasn't really rushed, but i really didn't have the time to make everything i wanted. the game was going to be a lot more like silent hill, with inventory and objectives. it has an actual lore, where there is a "good entity" that helps you to survive (yes, he's the glitchy square that follows you), a lot of people missed that you can lose limbs, and get metal ones after a few seconds, so you don't bleed to death, so that's something that the good entity can do, i won't say a lot more, because i want to save it for a complete version with an actual plot, i thought there wasn't going to be anymore exe challenges, but maybe i'm wrong, if there is, i'm 100% going to make the complete version for that challenge, so expect more of childhood.cue, i guess. also some notes about the lore, childhood has an actual entity that can spawn enemies by seeking through the "memory card", that's why the thumbnail has Crash Bandicoot on the background, this is going to be a lot more bigger than it is now, i hope i can show the lore sometime soon

From what I've gathered, the Green Mountain horror game is about a group of people hiking up a mountain to bury a body.

The MARIO inspiration for Green Mountain is very apparent, but I appreciate that the latter has a more focused direction with a short but eerie background story. I remember having my mind blown when the official sequels to MARIO were uncovered, only for the plot to diverge from the story of a murderer to something about a mysterious disease because the adolescent creator was just throwing darts on a board all along. I’m not sure if the creator of Green Mountain has more planned in store, but the story seems to be complete in a way that leaves you with questions that’ll haunt you, which I like.

Unnecessary meta horror is real. It used to be cool, what, a decade ago to see a creepypasta or just horror-related game 4th wall break and communicate with the player / mess with their PC. It was something never seen or thought of before, it made the game feel real and alive, almost sentient. But when every indie horror title started doing this, it just got annoying and repetitive. "Oh no, the name of my PC is in the game? Aaaaaah" or "the game forcefully crashed and wants me to re-open it? So scary!" In reality it's all been done before now to death, and unless it does something really talented and outside of the box with this concept, it's just annoying to see Sonic once again crash my PC with his ugly mug.

With Sonic.OMT, all of the characters have multiple secret routes and deaths, but I think 2 that changes the scene except I think Eggman who has 1. You can also find other creepypasta Sonics in the game as well, such as Lord X (Eggman, also has a cutscene), Sonic.EYX (Tails, jumpscares you), Fatal Error (Knuckles, f*cking kills you), Sonic.RIBS (Knuckles, vibing) and a few others. The 2 places Tails can go is to Lava Reef Zone, where Sonic is such a kind soul by helping Tails wash his face with a lavabath. While you explore the area, you can find Eggman's corpse in his drill car behind a destructible wall. You get to this zone by escaping Sonic in the hide and seek section, which you can do with a correctly placed spindash. Tails can also go to Labyrinth Zone, which also has a lot of death scenes that can each be considered the most disturbing in the game. You get here by breaking a destructible wall, but I don't remember where or when. The death scenes in this feature Sonic becoming an animorph and turning into a spooder with a chase scene where if he catches you you get a nice acupuncture treatment, and if you get a way, Sonic gets you a nice refreshing drink that you could sip on the beach if you wanted. Oops, read that wrong, HE turns YOU into a drink for him to enjoy on the beach. From the looks of things, he turns you into Kool-Aid. You also can get fake out drowned, but I don't remember the other death scenes in Labyrinth. I don't remember how to get to Knuckles' other secret, but I'm pretty sure it takes you to Sandopolis. There, Sonic gives you a free sticky hand... By turning your arm into one, so you can't really use it. Oh, he also makes you crawl everywhere. After gliding over a couple of arm fetish pits, you come across a trail of hanging bars above a very long arm fetish pit, and you need to quickly get across this pit because Sonic is behind you with his cosplay of the Basilisk from Harry Potter, and he's getting impatient of waiting in the line to get into the convention. It's possible to escape, you just need to do it 2 or 3 times, and a bit after you escape you can come across I think 2 endings. One ending (unless I'm thinking of another place in this game) takes Knuckles to Hidden Palace after going an alternate route where he tries to get to his rock collection. Sonic's there too, and really likes the rock collection. However, Sonic is such a clumsy goofy goober that he crushes Knuckles' green rock in his hand. Then I think what happens is that Sonic forgot his lunchbox at home, so he asks Knuckles if he can share some of his as he doesn't have any lunch money. Knuckles says that he had already eaten his lunch so it would be in his stomach, which is good enough for Sonic. For what I think is another ending, I can't remember what happens. If anyone else remembers or notices I've said something wrong, please correct me

Green Mountain is such a fascinating game. This is probably the closest this fanbase has to a M A R I O or a Coronation Day. Just something that isn't explicitly gorey or in your face with acknowledging you or evil Sonic, but is just confusing and probably unanswerable. That's something I kinda wish these games would move more towards. If not making something that's more unnervingly unanswerable, at least dial back the blood and gore aspect cause like... yeah, even if it's not scary to begin with, it's getting old. It's great we're getting some fangames that are at least getting out of that mold a bit. While I really wish we get some game that are just actual games than walking sims and strictly follow the creepypasta formula like CHILDHOOD.QUE, idk I'm wondering when we'll get something unique like Green Mountain again in the future.

The thing I like about the One Last Round series is how far it pushes Sonic's design. It takes what is normally a innocent mascot character and shows how shockingly well this character's design can be scary if you're creative enough. Also, for the topic of 4th wall break going too far, I do feel like you're onto something. There's a video called "The ethicies of developer trolling" that talk about this exact topic. Some stuff I had on my mind while watching this: 1:59 surprised to know that Revie owns a portion of Sonic.exe as iirc, like the og Sonic.exe owner, they were also under fire for some heinous acts a few years ago (specifically when the fnf mod for Sonic.exe was in its prime. Yeah, I know, I mentioned fnf, cringe) so yeah, just smth I remembered and I wonder if they still have their third of Sonic.exe ownership.. Probably obvious knowledge, but I like the idea of Green Mountain being basically a loop, where the deterioration of the world is the game's version of the world ending until it's booted up again (as well as the no-face Sonics) Also that when you beat no-face sonic and they try to escape, they seem to be banging on the side of the screen with their fist. Pretty interesting.. I kinda agree with you on Childhood.cue's sprite animations but I don't think they're horrible and would love to see a sprite animation video in that style, honestly Not every Sonic.exe fangame has to be a stadium rave lmao And poor Tails Ngl I'm still baffled that Sally.exe was just a rip of another sonic creepypasta, but ig I should've known from how different it was compared to Sonic.exe. This does leave the question of the og sonic creepypasta that Sally.exe took and why it was made, but who knows? your reviews of each game were greatly enjoyable and i appreciate the amount of research you did going into these, looking forward to maybe a part two if more games come out sooner or later. i will say i would recommend looking into one last round, the remake of one more time. I think it starts to raise some of the problems that are apparent with Mr. Pixel's line of games, as you can see Sonic.exe "wanting to spice things up" but the deaths just grow repetitive and it never changes the outcome or contributes to any sort of larger narrative. the game also gets overbearingly halloween-y with its aesthetics and kind of lack any sense of restraint. Still worth checking out.

Green mountain's heavy contrast looks like the old Sonic tokyo toy show beta screenshots, and the emptiness of the level fits the empty hills in the images. Bot to mention the fake sonic uses abilities and sprites that are seen in early beta's and concept art. The sonic does a jump move that was used in early beta's to show sonic celebrating after completing an act. The way sonic doesn't roll into a ball while jumping is also an early move, and most likely its the same for the sprite of sonic punching the wall while pushing at the screen. Its all probably madw to feel like its an incomplete sonic beta thats haunted in some way.

Let me bring you up to speed on the Sonic.exe owner situation. Astra no longer owns the chaarcter; only JoeDoughBoi and Revie own the official Sonic.exe series, now. Astra got understandably tired of the drama-filled rat race full of false accusations -- both Revie and JoeDoughBoi have been falsely accused of heinous shit in the past, and it was pretty bad for poor Revie -- and legitimately heinous individuals on the level of J.C. himself... So she just left Twitter altogether, scrapped her plans for Xenophanes, and handed over the rights. And also, while Revie and JoeDoughBoi got the rights to Sonic.exe -- 2011 X is both of their takes on the character, while Lord X is exclusively Joe's take, and EXE and 2017 X are exclusively Revie's takes -- Astra seems to have originally gotten the rights handed over to her because she was a fan, if not a friend of J.C. and his girlfriend, until she found out about J.C.'s problematic history. I found evidence supporting that in J.C.'s DeviantArt gallery, prior to him losing those rights.

Also, the Tails secret in Sonic 2011. If you manage to beat the level section or let time run out, Sonic.exe will appear and take Tails away, you're taken to a black screen that says "Now N- Don't be shy!" After that, Tails is taken to Angel Island Zone/Hide and Seek, as if it never happened. In the secret Knuckles section, doing so will make Sonic appear, and he'll fight you directly, without the need of taking you to the end of Scrap Brain Zone/You can't run. If you step on any set of stairs and let time run out in "...", the stairs will turn into a steep slope causing you to fall down to a flat surface so that Sonic.exe can kill Eggman.

My favorite EXE remake (if you can even call it that given how far it deviates from the original story) is Sonic.EXE Spirits of Hell, and it's sequel, Whisper of Soul. Both it and Nightmare Beginning are oldies, but goodies. They take such a new and fresh approach to the Sonic horror genre by, get this, having endings where the characters can actually survive. Yeah, these games actually have good endings, and they both completely redesign the character of Sonic.EXE. I like Spirits of Hell more than Nightmare Beginning, but honestly, both games are good. While they lack the stunning visuals of the more modern remakes, they definitely keep that sense of horror, especially Spirits of Hell. Having EXE games where the characters can actually fight back is just such a nice change of pace from the, while still good and capable of being expanded upon, undeniably formulaic gameplay of most EXE games that is "walk/explore until you die"

Nice video! I was hoping and really looking forward to Green Mountain, that is my favorite Sonic Creepypasta right next to the remake of the original Sonic.exe. There is something about Green Mountain that really creeps me out, the way it tells it's story is very unsettling to me and that one picture of the Demonic Sonic corpse laying on the ground gave me nightmares.
