You are correct. Cost is the main drive for wooden homes, with stucco or sheet rock interior walls. And also easier to maintain temperatures, with the right insulation, during the extreme weather months. Nowadays homes are lighter weight wood frames, and even cheaper materials are being used, such as laminated wood, plastic siding, and composite roof shingles, and gusset plates instead of nails!. Though it's cheaper to build, it makes for a terrible combination- fire safety wise. You can have homes built of bricks and cement, but $$$$
