On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

If the bubble of the eye tracker was about 5x-6x smaller than it was in the first scene, and the color was changed to match the HUD of the aircraft you're flying it would be perfectly fitting. It would definitely help me keep track of the other aircraft as my resolution is usually low due to slow internet.

I like green a lot, partially because it usually matches cockpit/hud backlighting, I also think that a smaller more focused circle would be better, maybe about ~80% the size it is now. Also I should mention if you stream on twitch I've seen it in use but the viewer has their own control on the size, colour and shape of the tracking point.

I would make the circle smaller, and try to match the color to the light green of the HUD as much as possible. That way it's less intrusive.
@tigerpjm
@tigerpjm 2 жыл бұрын
Green is used because it's the colour most visible to the human eye - which makes it the most intrusive colour, not the least. Red is the least intrusive colour, which is why soldiers use red light in the field if they are forced to use illumination. Your pupils contract less and recover dilation quicker, and red light is more difficult to see over distance because it's the least energetic frequency in the visual spectrum.

@@candle_eatist Which would be fine if it were being used to identify objects inside the cockpit. But it isn't. The reason it's being considered is to help in the identification of objects (aircraft) outside of the cockpit. Also, red is the least "bright" of all colours. And there's nothing saying you need to use bright red. Have a look at the video, red almost appears black when you're not looking directly at it.

Maybe a slight color-shift towards red (warm/"organic") from the regular HUD-green ... to keep it subtle, yet distinguishable from the aircraft's systems ... with a smaller circle, maybe lower opacity?? (if that is possible) ... more like a cue/hint, granting less obscuring/masking ...

So, I’ve been studying operator movements and attention, and this is super helpful in cockpit for that reason. Tying together how you assemble the right state and in what order you check instruments in a quick scan downwards. I’ve worked on US Navy nuclear reactor control panels and data visualization in computing and we do use eye gaze studies to understand how people use dashboards and software. I know for nuclear operator training, we tell people where we look at even point at instruments by hand to get backup confirmation before taking action. Of course, nuclear reactors require a lot of attention but are less time critical most of the time, but the idea is to train in the attention sequence so that during an emergent situation you’ve got a routine nailed down that you can speed through without making mistakes or tripping up on judgement errors. I think outside the cockpit, seeing how you deal with BVR engagements where you’re looking at the sky for contrails and then checking and operating the radar is also instructive. Even more than after the merge. I guess if anything I wish the eye gaze outline were a tiny bit lighter. Just barely enough to indicate.

The bubble is hella better for watching your videos & being able to track your bandit, especially since I mostly watch on my phone. There have been _so_ many times when I lost track of the bandit, but with this I can tell where you are looking and where your bandit is. This avoids any guesswork, allowing me to better understand in real time why you maneuver a certain way. It's a straight winner.

I think the circle is cool in those niche situations like when the bandit is very small and may not be visible at a low resolution. And for showing what to watch in a bvr fight, I don't play dcs (this will change Im saving for the hardware) or fly planes so reading the instrumentation can feel like trying to read another language at times and its really helpful to see what you are looking at because its not always obvious. Otherwise for a dogfight where the bandit is close and it's obvious what's going on and where to look I prefer the circle to not be on the screen. Also I liked when the circle was the same color as the hud, it made it feel less out of place.

It helps us watching to follow your planning and thoughts, especially the things you talk about, when the bandit disppears against the ground clutter. Or when you are setting up a BVR fight, we can follow your thoughts by following your eyes inside the cockpit (though lots of us wont know automatically what every instrument and guage is, like you do). So well worth an extensive try out.

It fits the visible "theme" of the aircraft's cockpit, so it looks like it belongs.

I like the bubble, it helps seeing what you're focused on. I like it green, it best contrasts when you are looking down at your instruments and internal controls.

This is helpful. Clear looks best. Maybe having the bubble smaller would be better but this eye tracker is definitely a plus for your content moving forward

From a learning perspective, definitely very useful for people to see what you are looking at with your eyes. As for color, that's a hard one. Red definitely stands out the most but I found the green easier on the eyes and still visible even if the background was the ground with trees and stuff. I've been following Tobii for a while now and only just gotten into DCS, you are making me want one now :P

I like the red circle. It really makes a difference knowing what you are paying attention to and the red but with thin lines helps me distinguish between the hud/hmts and what you are looking at. I watch on a phone but try to replicate your actions in game so this makes a world of difference.

The bubble is situational , super useful at times . Dude with your editing skills you could turn it on when needed , like when your scanning for enemies or missiles , and yes during head down BVR fights , I can see what your focus is , very instructional .

I like the bubble. You definitely hit all the points of when to use it and not use it. The circle would be great for tutorials and for ppl to realize what they should be looking at when flying or engaging contacts. Best bet is to give it a shot and follow up with the comments but also do what you want, that’s why we’re here.

Hah! Great minds think alike. I literally bought one of these yesterday and so far am loving it for the same reasons as you. Larger display, cameras/sensors always to high etc. It’s taking some dialling in but the immersion it adds is fantastic. To answer your question the on screen gaze indicator would be handy in a pure tutorial but your content is fine as is IMHO. I got this to use with star citizen, MSFS and IL2 mainly but it doesn’t appear to be supported anymore in IL2 despite being listed on the tobii website but apart from that I’m loving it so far.

I always assumed that whatever you're focused on is in the center of the screen. You zoom into the instruments that you are interested in then onto the bandits or incoming missiles. Even if the bandits are masked against the ground we know that they are there so it's not confusing. The way that you comentate on action also explains perfectly the situations that you are in and the next steps that you plan to take in the fight. Personally I found the bubble very distracting, and it seemed to distort some of the visuals inside. I enjoy the way that you're able to look over your shoulder to the 6 and zoom in and out. I really enjoy your content GS! Keep uploading the great videos!!

The bubble would be incredibly helpful. And fun fact... many years ago I worked in the same building as a Tobii office and used to sneak into their bathroom since it was always the cleanest and quietest one. Eventually they caught on and put a lock on the door :(

Your channel is so successful because you have good instincts for making and editing quality content. I'm sure you will only include Tobii head/eye tracking in those scenario's where it improves your product so I'll just continue to rely on your good judgement. :)

I like the eye tracker option, it shows and teaches the viewer a lot about focus and awareness. I think either white or green work well. I would lean toward green. Thank you for all you do for us.

Definitely helpful. White circles. The heatmap could be helpful for some situations in understanding where you spend most of your time monitoring, like horizon scanning or BVR and what instruments you're checking most.

Yes!!! Use this! Especially for the BVR videos, I at least don't know what you're looking at in the cockpit, and as someone who wants to learn the cockpit layouts as well as the mechanics this seems like a wonderful tool. My vote is to leave it on for all cockpit views. Green I think would be the best color, since it more closely matches the instrumentation and that, I think, would make it blend in and be less distracting for casual viewers while allowing those who want to learn more to follow along more closely

This sort of content is perfect for me trying to get back into combat flight sims, I had the original track IR seems like 100 years ago, lol. Have a tobii eye tracker, 4c i think, have used it in F1 a little but my brains always saying COMBAT FLIGHT! So I must learn DCS with my Tobii!

That is very cool! I think it’s useful for times that you need or want us to see something specific, but probably not for the whole time. I like the bubble the most, and the color should match the HUD color

I think the white bubble is perfect and it does give us a great feeling of what you are looking at. I like VR and TrackIR but the freedom of just sitting down and tobii always being ready and not needing any gadgets to work, is just so nice. I would love to see your settings for Tobii. I was never able to get it stable. Looking at extremes would often get twitchy. I had to go back to TrackIR as I could just not tweak the settings to work. This was back when tobii was first released though, so I need to try it again and see if things have gotten better.

If you're hesitant to use it a most of the time I think it'd be a really cool addition to toggle on in the scenario the bandit is against ground. Using green to help blend with the HUD colour would be really cool. All in all, I think it'd be a cool addition and would help in the videos! Fantastic work on the channel as always!

Wow! First off, that device is really cool. I’ve used a trackir over the years from trackir 3 to 5 but this device is head and shoulders above trackir. I’ve considered a virtual device in the past but I always wondered how you might see the keyboard (or anything else for that matter) while wearing it. This device solves that completely. As well as not having to wear the dots in some fashion. Second, I think the ring would be very helpful watching a playback. I really like watching your videos but usually have trouble seeing what you are seeing so this helps immensely. Third, I think I like the green tint the best. White wasn’t horrible but green seems less intrusive to me just as a viewer. Cool cool video, thx!

The green bubble blends nicely with the hud and hmd, so doesn't mess up the overall look of your vids. I think that setting would help viewers in learning to look out of the cockpit and scan as you do.

GS, you are just excellent as a content creator! Innovative, considerate of your viewers, articulate, and sometimes just hilarious! You're also a gifted instructor. I love all your suggested uses: when you'd turn it on and off, your color selections, everything -- spot on. I don't know if you can adjust the size of the circle as one commenter below suggests. But if so, a little smaller might be better. But this is just brilliant! BTW, will using this mean you have 2 circle and 3 circle fights? :^D

Would clearly be useful in Dogfight where we often loose the bandit visual because of YT compression. Could be usefull too for explanation/tactic videos so we can see what you pay attention to in the cockpit. Bought myself a Tobii Eye Tracker 5 for Christmas Gift! Super happy to see you are using it too! Can't wait to install it on December 26th :) Will be very useful for my F/A-18C and the futur Apache!

I think this is super cool, especially for debriefs and tutorials. In your regular content, it might be a bit distracting, but if you can switch it on and off on the fly and you want to point out something, that's really useful. What I would also like to see is the control inputs overlay. When you say, "used too much rudder here" or explain where to keep your lift vector relative to the bandit, it would be amazing to see how much rudder you gave and what your stick inputs are.

I have been using Tobii for DCS for a long time, but I mostly use the headtracking and NOT the eyetracking component of it. Am pretty happy with it in general! nice to see you try it out! Its actually also very useful for instructional videos, where its easy to show on what switches you are clicking etc.
