We compare the real-world, on-snow sliding qualities of UHMW-PE and HDPE to determine whether there's any noticeable difference in hauling difficulty.

Amazing how much you can pull on one of those sleds! I’m amazed. Looking forward to the day I make it on one of your trips.

Nice test. Amazing how much one could pull, especially on the flats.

Thanks for taking the time in (and risking frostbite) for this experiment. Interesting information.

This has been out there a while and probably been solved but a person could measure the differences in friction between the high density & the ultra high density by attaching a weight scale to the rope. Similar to a scale one would use to weigh a fish. Starting friction would always be more but once moving, it would be cool to see if there were any differences. Still a great video.

I've yet to see a definitive statement about the relative friction of these two plastics on snow. Long experience in the ski industry suggests that uhmw must be better, but a key difference is that skiing is conducted at velocities that are not relevant to winter hauling, and velocity can make a huge difference in how much micro-melting occurs. However, it looked like this test was conducted on snow that had been tracked in and sintered for hours or days before the test. I think it would have been worth the extra effort to perform the test on a fresh float, because that's all that matters on a long-haul trip. Electric winch with one of those little hanging load scales would be the way to go, as noted below.

Great video, fun to watch Bruce Willis lending a hand. UHMW does remain more flexible in the cold.

Yes, definitely more flexible in the cold, which I've come to conclude is its major advantage over HDPE. We have a short video demonstrating HD vs UH in cold weather here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZmoYKiFtJ6mZGg.html

I've used uhmw for dogsleds and it does well down to -50f. Have smashed it into trees and only broken it once. Local word is that the white stuff is not UV stable. I have seen it craze after several years of being outside. Then it starts to fall apart easily

That was entertaining. We have to use a pulk with a pole due to the mountains here. Otherwise, we'd get run over by our sleds. Do you ever use anything to keep the toboggan from running over you while going downhill?

For small hills, we often just run and hope to not get caught! For steeper/ longer hills, we typically swing around to the back side of the toboggan and lower by the tail line. I tried rigid poles when we were starting out, but since we don't get into too much steep terrain the ease of use of the soft lines seems nicer for us.

So technically, the two of you can take a full ton of gear on your trips. That’s glamping for sure, hills might suck though...

We'd just bring a chunk of 5mm cord and a couple pulleys. This would be no problem on the hills!
