Big thanks to Mr. Jack for letting me play around on this awesome swing blade mill. I still have a lot to learn but it was fun to throw the sawdust around.
In the 2 man operation I was cutting in the wrong direction hence the sawmill wanting to pull forward.

When I was looking at sawmills, I was looking at a swing blade mill. Every saw mill type has it's place. I think you need them all :). Never enough mills.

I think you're right about the 2 man working. Push the head through on the horizontal cut, then pull back for the vertical. This way the blade would not be dragging you along!

You continue to produce great content Thomas! My CMC retires this year, has bought his forever home in the country, and I gave him a steer in your KZfaq direction since his interests soon will intersect with your content. I’m a bit jealous but not too much longer for me until I can have some permanence in where I reside 👍🏽👍🏽

Great demonstration of the Peterson Swing blade mill. One thing that was obvious to me was that the boards coming off the log are already edged. On a bandsaw mill, to get every board out of a log you have extra work to go back and edge the initial slabs. Another thing was that the log remained stationary, it didn't have to be rolled to make a square cant. As you mentioned cutting quarter sawn lumber with a swing blade mill is pretty easy just by changing the cutting pattern. There are certainly many advantages to a swing blade mill over a bandsaw mill. If one has ready access to large size trees (20" or bigger) and want dimensional lumber over slabs, a swing blade style mill is certainly the ticket.

The great thing about this mill is they have a clip on slab attachment for it. So it can do slabs or dimensional. This seems to be the quartersawn master

Finally someone who is dyslexic showing us how it’s done. Now I need to do is follow your directions precisely and it’ll turn out right for me. Very good job, I’m halfway through and I’m hoping that you show how to cut wider boards.(this, is meant to be positive comment )

Hi Thomas. I have worked with machinery that uses parts like that little round thing that almost touches the saw blade and to me from looking at it from this angle when you were sharpening that blade looks like a proximity switch to detect a loose blade. if it is wired from the back of it than it's a proximity switch. Nice machine 😎

I've always loved the swingmill design concept. Also, the portability is superior to most bandsaw mills. I own a bandsaw mill but would love one of these to take into the woods and mill things in place. Much more difficult with my bandsaw mill.

They aren't quartersawn boards, though. It has nothing to do with the right angle cut. Quartersawn boards have the grain running at right angles to the largest face of the board.

Beautiful wood, but it is actually Laurel Oak, not Water Oak. Laurel Oak is one of the more common oak trees in the southeastern USA. It is one of the Red Oaks, the wood coming off that log clearly puts it in the group. We have more Laurel Oaks here in north east Florida than any hardwood, and so many people think they are worthless other than firewood. Laurel Oak is good lumber too.

@ 28:30 ish, if you'd lowered your track 1 inch and cut 6 inches deep horizontally, wouldn't it then have been quarter sawn lumber?
@TCSawmills
@TCSawmills 2 жыл бұрын
I was still learning on that machine, 😆. I've got about 3 hrs or run time under my belt operating a swing blade. But yes if you changed the cut orientation around the mid height on the log you could get a few more quarter sawn pieces. But I was not advanced enough on the machine to do that. I do hope to get one someday and learn more tricks on it.

There is no reason why the set for the cut has to be in the center . Put it nearer the operator side so you don't have to step on or over the log to make adjustments

G'day Judith, you are correct there is a possibility that you may trip when walking backwards whilst operating a swing blade mill. After a decade on my Lucas 10/30 I've not tripped once running a machine like this tends to keep your wits about you 👍.

If you would cut the horizontal cut first and the vertical cut second you would not have the weight of the cut off on the blade. also, all you have to do is look at the teeth on the blade to tell which way you should be cutting, you were trying to saw with the back of the teeth when the saw was pulling through the cut.
@TCSawmills

Pretty good video. But you should Always pull in the vertical and Push in the horizontal. The saw should never pull itself. You can get one slab with this saw by turning the log over and sawing down just like you did at first. Just leave how ever much you want the thickness.

the blade is fine you are cutting in the wrong direction and its very dangerous if you continue to cut like that one dat that mill will push you while you are backing up and if you trip or fall when that happens you might be missing some toes or worse another thing you just want to touch the tooth ever so slightly and sweep across the tooth 2 times the amount you took off to those teeth lost you about 5 sharpenings I sharpen approximately every 3 hours in soft woods and get around 25 sharpenings per set of teeth

This video should be deleted if you were to cut a hard wood log like you showed the two person operation you would either jump the mill out of the log and derail it or have the mill run you down when you are doing the horizontal back cut.

Teeth were barely touched just cleaning the face, they are carbide. I'm just showing different sawmills that are out there. There are definite advantages to this type of sawmill along with disadvantages. If you're out in the bush and you have a massive log you want cut but can't move the log a machine like this would be the ticket. Just haul the pieces of the sawmill in then set up over the log then cut it up. This type of mill is also fantastic at cutting knotty wood, the bade doesn't wander. Lastly the circle saw marks are very desirable in certain markets. Again just showing people various options out there since there's very little information out there on these types of sawmills.
