Toby & Emily in The Great Train Race

My two fastest G-scale model trains go head-to-head in a race to verify that Toby is indeed faster than Emily. I set up a special layout for train racing on the patio in my back yard, and included a special (dangerous!) design feature... a crossover track where the two speeding trains will quite often crash in to each other!
If you're a fan of Thomas & Friends, I think you'll enjoy the video... even though Thomas himself doesn't appear in it! All the crashes prove the toughness of Bachmann model train products, as there was no damage to either Toby or Emily.
Trivia fact:
This video was shot almost entirely with a DJI Mini 2 drone... but not necessarily in the way you'd expect! Sure, I flew the drone for the really high aerial shots where the camera flies over my house and neighborhood... but for the shots of the actual races, I used a very unusual camera technique to take advantage of the stability of the gimbal on the drone: I kept the propellers turned off and simply carried the drone in my hands as I followed the trains around my patio. This let me take advantage of the drone's gimbal, without actually having to fly the drone in such a tight space. Because the drone does not record any audio, I mounted a Sony digital audio recorder on top of Toby to capture the actual sounds of the locomotives during the races.

When it comes to the weather, consider yourself lucky. The past week has been very cold here in Pennsylvania and we're lucky if the temperature gets to 20 degrees. In this video, you shoot a rematch in between Emily and Toby, the two fastest G scale analog locomotives from Bachmann, the manufacturer that makes the Thomas and Friends model trains in several scales including G scale in either analog and/or DCC (Digital Command Control) and also made the 2-6-0 Glenbrook narrow gauge brown steam locomotive that is equipped with DCC and also pulls three green pullsman passenger coaches with a red caboose at the end and the Valvoline Train that runs on an analog control system. And we'll see if Emily is faster than Toby or not. And also we'll see several crashes if Emily and Toby hit the crossover section of the layout at the exact same time. Which they did! Shot with the Crossover Cam or the Crunch Cam and also see the crashes in slow motion. I definitely like the crashes in this video! Three crashes in a row! Actually, five crashes in a row, if you count Emily bumping into Toby and he tipped over and Toby survives after Emily bumped into him again and this time, she ended up derailing herself! I can actually think that Toby is saying: "Goodbye Emily, I'll see you at the finish line!" This video is also called Toby Vs. Emily. I remember in 2019, Toby and Emily both crashed at the crossing at the exact same time when they are pulling two cars behind them. I also remember you made The Great G Scale Model Train Race video in 2020, where you are running 19 G scale model trains you own at that time, to determine once and for all which one is the fastest and the fastest is Toby the #7 0-6-0 brown steam Tram Engine from Bachmann. And coming in at a close second in that race is Emily where you raced Emily with her tender attached. You wondered if the previous race would be different if you detached Emily's tender so that she can go faster without pulling the extra weight of the tender. You use the DJI Mavic Mini Two drone both the aerial view of the neighborhood and also to carry it on a gimbal, turn off the propellers, and shoot the video. And you also attached a black device on top of Toby's roof that it is called the Sony Digital Audio Recorder that records the live sound of the races. If Rainbow Flash, Caramel Cobbler and Applejack or Apple Cobbler (Applejack's married name) are watching this video of Toby and Emily doing a series of races in the rematch against each other, they will react when they see them getting involved in five crashes in a row! You start five of the six races showing Emily racing Toby with her tender attached and then you removed her tender for the sixth race. And now there is no question about whether or not Emily will be faster than Toby even with or without her tender attached to her. G scale model trains analog and Digital Command Control or for short, DCC, are extremely robust and they still work well and fine even after the nasty crashes. So that actually settles it. Sorry, Emily! Toby is the winner of the six races for today! Toby is way faster than Emily even without her tender attached to her and wins three of the six races all the way! At least G scale analog Toby is! I don't know about animated TV Toby, but that's a whole different race there! Even though Thomas The Tank Engine, Percy, James and Winston with the Lego version of Sir Topham Hatt aka The Fat Controller have not appeared in this video, you, Jim Zim, will make a video showing them including Emily, Toby, and introducing Devious Diesel. And then you will make another video where we introduce Paxton. At the end of the video, you also show us how the landscaping in the backyard of the house in Washington is coming along. You cover the bare dirt with river rocks that came from the Columbia River. This video also reminds me of the four races in between Thomas and Percy, the two DCC locomotives and Percy ends up winning all the way! Sorry, Thomas! Percy is a bit faster than Thomas the #1 0-6-0 Blue E2 Tank Engine! At least G scale DCC Percy is! I don't know about animated TV Percy, but that is a totally different race there! Reminds me of the four races in between Thomas the #1 Blue 0-6-0 E2 Tank Engine and Percy the 0-4-0 #6 Small Green Saddle Tank Engine, the two DCC locomotives in the Thomas and Friends series made by Bachmann. And Percy eventually ends up winning all the way.

You, Jim Zim, made another video of your G scale model train versions of Thomas and Friends from Bachmann in a series of drag races. The first drag race is in between Winston the red track inspection car with the Lego version of Sir Topham Hatt in the driver's seat and Percy the Small Green Saddle Tank Engine pulling the Troublesome Trucks. The second race is in between Percy and Thomas the #1 0-6-0 Blue E2 Tank Engine pulling Annie and Clarabel. The third race is in between Thomas and James the #5 2-6-0 Red Tender Engine pulling the green coal truck with a full load of black coal, the white tank car full of milk with a blue logo of a cow on it, and a yellow tank car full of gasoline. That sounds dangerous! If the yellow Sodor Fuel gas tank car were to explode next to the white Tidmouth Milk tank car, that would be one really powerful milkshake! Thomas the Blue E2 Tank Engine from Bachmann is fast, but James the Really Super Splendid #5 2-6-0 Red Steam Tender Engine is faster because he is strictly analog and not equipped with DCC circuitry built in to him. You have forgot how fast James is, because he took off like a rocket! And that third race is a blowout. The fourth race is in between James and Emily pulling the custom Jim Zim passenger coaches. And James wins to move on to the next race. The final race is in between James and Toby the Brown Steam Tram Engine. You have James only pulling his own red tender full of coal and the green coal truck and he wins the race over Toby, who appears to be straining to pull the eight cars behind him. You redo the final race by removing the extra cars and let Toby pull the custom Jim Zim passenger coaches. And we also see Gavin and his cousin setting up and testing the layout. If Flip Flop, Celestia, Cheese Sandwich, Pinkie Pie or Pinkie Sandwich which by the way is Pinkie Pie's married name, Royal Pin, Rarity or Rare Pin (Rarity's married name), Rainbow Flash, Prince Flash Sentry, Princess Twilight Sparkle or Princess Twilight Sentry (Twilight Sparkle's married name), Daisy Dreams, Wysteria, Caramel Cobbler and Applejack or Apple Cobbler (Applejack's married name) are watching the drag race video, they will react to their favorite Thomas and Friends model trains from Bachmann! Maybe you, Jim Zim, should definitely run James the Really Super Splendid #5 2-6-0 Red Steam Tender Engine from Thomas and Friends manufactured by Bachmann without his tender so he can go faster without pulling the extra weight of the tender. You should race James against Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends when you have the analog version of Devious Diesel from Thomas and Friends manufactured by Bachmann. Great video, is there any chance you’ve ordered the new G-scale Thomas and Friends diesel and Paxton? My Uncle has a g-scale model railway in his back garden and he has Thomas, Emily and diesel. I have often wondered if anyone does the "Hi Emily" thing in videos other than the one where I suggest it. I'm glad to hear that someone does! Trivia fact: The voices that say "Hi Emily" throughout that video are the voices of some of my former co-workers in California before I retired. I brought a digital audio recorder in to work with me one day, and after our daily group meeting finished, I asked each of them to say "Hi Emily" in to my recorder. Whenever I watch that video, it makes me smile to think of how they each were willing to indulge my request that day to help me with my video.

Nice day for a Dogsled race in my backyard as we continue getting snow with forecasts up to 30-45 cm (12-18 inches). Now ... do any of the trains get damaged as a result of these crashes? That would be my concern. I wouldn’t want to see the more expensive trains/equipment get damaged needlessly.

They seemed to survive the crashes quite well. I think it helped that it was a 22 degree crossing angle, so the trains were not hitting dead-on.

Jim, in one of your previous videos, you talked about DCC and that you use a prodigy elite system. What decoders do you use? I have, g scale lionel, aristocraft, Bachmann, USA trains, and LGB locomotives and I'm worried about compatible.

DCC is DCC. There are standards that they have to follow to be able to say something is compatible with DCC. So, if you have a DCC control system, it should work with any locomotive that has any kind of DCC decoder in it. As for mine, all but one of my DCC locomotives just have the factory-installed DCC decoders in them. My newest loco, the Bachmann "Glenbrook", had to have an aftermarket decoder put in to it. I don't even know what one was installed... I had the retailer do it for me before they shipped the whole thing to me.

You made yet another video that stars the Thomas and Friends G scale model trains from Bachmann in another drag race to see who can beat Toby the Brown Steam Tram Engine in the final race of the day. Diesel should be released fairly soon... in the next month or two at the most. I think Paxton isn't expected until next year, if I remember correctly. I'm not entirely sure I'll buy him. He's very similar to Diesel, and I just don't know if I want to spend the money on something so similar to what I'll already have with Diesel. I'll make a video of Diesel when I get him. If the video gets a lot of views, I'll probably buy Paxton... but if the Diesel video isn't popular, I'll probably skip Paxton.

When I checked Trainworld's web site a few weeks ago, they said that Paxton would not be available until next year, but when I checked again today they had seven in stock! So, I ordered one, and it should be here in about a week.

Gordon the Big Blue #4 Express Tender Engine from Thomas and Friends is not available in G scale and Bachmann only made Gordon the Big Blue #4 Express Tender Engine in HO scale and N scale! But Bachmann will be making Duck the #8 Great Western Railway Engine and Edward the #2 Blue Tender Engine from Thomas and Friends in G scale in 2023, which is next year! But if Bachmann can make Gordon the Big Blue #4 Express Tender Engine in G scale, then they will make the G scale green and red Express passenger coaches in the future!
