This exercise will make you sketch looser!
It's a recently simple technique to sketch and draw loose, to make your sketches more free, spontaneous and creative and to enjoy the freedom and enjoyment that comes with that style.
Seriously, it's a fool proof way and I'd encourage any beginner who wants to loosen up their sketching, to draw looser or develop a loose art style to have a go a t this technique and see what happens.

Thank you so much for this Toby! I love ink and wash sketching but had lost hope that I'd ever be able to do it again because of weak and shaky hands. Those wiggly lines and unscripted wanderings come naturally to me now. I'll just build them into my sketches and not worry about it. 😊

That is a really cool tip…I wasn’t convinced until you went over with the darker lines, and then the whole thing popped!!

When you go a bit crazy you definitely need to re-introduce a bit of structure, but then everything else fades to the background :)

Hi Toby! This is a great video. I love the challenge of intentionally making stray or flowing lines. As a perfectionist, it is a huge struggle for me to just let go and draw like you do. I was wondering, do you have any other advice for someone who is always afraid of messing up? I love to draw as a hobby, it truly relaxes me, but as an extreme novice at this medium, I feel like I have trouble completing my drawings because I inevitably make a mark or a line that I don’t like. Is there anything else I can do to allow myself a little more freedom when I sketch? I honestly think that my lack of talent isn’t holding me back from creating art I like, it’s just my self doubt.

A great and deep question! For me, it's about working out what I actually enjoy doing - and taking it from there. I don't enjoy being careful, so I come to terms with more and more mistakes 😜

Is anyone else not able to see the end piece properly because youtube puts recommendations for videos over the screen at the end? It's absolutely useless for art videos, not being able to see the finished piece
