Hello everyone! In this 10 minute (give or take...) urban sketch tutorial, I'll show you how to use line work to capture an urban scene, and add loose and fun colours to make the scene come to life.
We'll talk about how to create variations in your green washes, how to leave negative space and, if you stick around to the end, how to create bold shapes from negative space to make your painting and sketching really punchy / interesting.
My tutorials are all about having fun, simple sketching tips for people who want to do more in less time, and not spend their time worrying and stressing.
Painting and sketching can be really fun, easy, and enjoyable - but too often we get stuck in the detail.
Pushing ourselves, stretching our comfort zone, but doing it in a relaxed way - that's how I love to sketch, paint and use watercolours.
Hopefully you'll agree :)

I also love the final details with the pen. I painted along with you and can see that I am improving bit by bit and I am most often so pleased with what shows up on the paper. When you work quickly it makes me relax and just 'go for it' and that is the feeling I want from my work. Thank you. Very well done. AGAIN.

Toby, thank you for sharing this sketch. I am a newbie looking to make sketching and watercolor in my own means and methods. I started with really detailing urban sketches and people and find more happiness suggesting rather than documenting. I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts ask you sketched which helps me connect the lines with your visualization. Have a great day!

Thank you so much for this very encouraging work of art. I particularly liked that you could sort of bring your own interpretation into the work, which I would now like to try. I have always been self-conscious about my art work, but your approach seems excellent. I really like the idea too that you can sketch something like this, and use your own colouring, add interesting further details if you wish. So I’m very glad I found your video, because I do so think your style and approach, and way of sketching are delightful! I also liked that you tended to concentrate on a suggestion of some of the items in the picture, and I do think that this is interestingly very effective. Thanks, again, and I’ll look forward to practicing and enjoying more of your work in the future.

Hi Toby I discovered your tutorials yesterday & was amazed to see my local town! I will be working my way through all your tutorials. I also prefer the bold lines at the end. Your sketches are great. Thankyou. When you are out & about & painting in a sketchbook, what paper thickness would you recommend? as I notice you use quite a lot of water (probably where I'm going wrong 😅)

Hello from St Neots! Come along to the Urban Sketch meet ups if you fancy it :) For sketching like this - minimum 150gsm, but that can be a bit dicey. I usually use Moleskin sketchbooks - 220gsm - but my paper is all a minimum of 300gsm.

Toby this is great. Prefer the bolder lines but want to know why you didn’t detail the large tree. Would that counter the negative space you trying to create as it would be too similar?

Thanks for the comment and good question. The simple answer is I often don't add much detail to trees, normally an outline and a suggestion of detail. Especially for quick sketching 😊

Found it curious the negative remarks about the clean up or heavy line. (A good reason not to put content out there). Wondering if a side by side of the Unibal and the yellow fountain pen; wonder how small quick side by side vignettes would compare / contrast or have you noticed in your experience any discernible difference? Thank you for your work. It appears to me that you are assembling works for a book - yes-no? Think about it

I'm probably with you here - it becomes very illustrative with a thick line, but sometimes works really well...

Advanced through all the sketches on KZfaq nobody seems to tell us beginners what type of ink pen to use for these sketches

There is no rule, :) I could do this sketch with a fine liner, a fountain pen, a chisel marker, a fude pen - they'd all feel a little different, but definitely look like my style. Find what fits you with a bit of experimentation. Just needs to be waterproof - check out urbansketch.co.uk/supplies if you want to see the things I like to use most of all

I’m a beginner and learned a lot watching this. The suggestion of the steps and how to loosely draw is very helpful to me. I’m still trying to discover my style.
