Its a common misconception that these instruments were played without nails. Theorbo and guitar players often played with nails in the baroque period.

I played theorbo back in high school for about 3 years. Over that time, I learned this, Canario, and a few other amazing pieces by Kapsberger. The way you play this instrument makes me wish I still had access to a theorbo, I really miss playing it. It's easier if you play guitar or know how to fingerpick (obviously, I mean look at his picking hand omg). Doesn't mean it's an easy instrument though. The frets are larger (usually, even despite being movable), and the reentrance tuning of the last two strings take time to get used to. Hand cramps? All the time actually. I wasn't too good at this, but wow, you play this piece beautifully. Kudos my friend

Very gorgeous playing. My thought was that this music from the 17th Century has a very modern feel indeed. I just could not help thinking of the playing of John Fahey - a very very different musical tradition to say the least but the intensity and integrity of the playing is similar at least to my ears.

Perfect performance Brandon, it's such a mournful and melancholy piece, but with a glimmer of hope at the end. The clouds parting after a storm, the night sky being washed away by the sunrise. I wonder what Kapsberger was thinking when he picked out these chords?

Danny Well - that is the case with most quality hand built string instruments today. And unlike the modern guitar, which everyone can learn to strum a few chords on at least, learning the theorbo and other lute instruments (as well as instruments of the violin and viol families) takes years to master, and henceforth are instruments played mostly by those who have made their instrument their profession. But my original comment was aimed at directing your attention to other videos by other theorbists available on KZfaq, if you hadn’t looked for those as of yet.
