Benja Freeman, I can't say I know about any 15th century conflicts between Portuguese and Japanese, but some of the ones that took place in the 16th century are very interesting reading indeed. One particular naval battle is discussed on this rather old thread at myarmoury. If I remember correctly, things get a little contentious among some of the posters! 😃 myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=4831 You'd also probably be interested in a legendary set of skirmishes that occurred between Spanish and Japanese in the Philippines in 1582 known as the Battles of Cagayan. And not just any Japanese, but Ronin Samurai(as well as Chinese pirates)! It's been a while since I've checked, so there might be more than just the Wiki entry... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1582_Cagayan_battles Finally, although probably more likely the period of the side-sword than the rapier, the Battle of Diu(1509) was an epic contest between the Portuguese and various Muslim militaries on the Arabian coast of India, and is very interesting to read about... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Diu_(1509)

First, Samurai and Japan's foot soldiers used spears. And even if they went against Portuguese with using swords, that would be the Nodachi which has very long blade (90cm), still a little shorter than Rapier's (100cm) but not as much as the Katana. Second, the Rapier is a dueling sword not a battle field one. So I doubt the Portuguese would be using that in battle against the Japanese.

Portuguese were not interested in fighting Japanese with their katana and so on, because they were trading there. Would any major fight between Portuguese and Japanese samurai which was ruling class in this country happen, Shogun would a) simply behead any Portuguese involved in the conflict b) fine all their trade post, c) he can even prohibit trade depending on the scale of the conflict. Would such conflict really happen, I would bet it wouldn't be rapiers that played any role in this. Portuguese ships, cannons, musketry and pistols would be play quite more significant role than European swordsmanship. Plus I don't think katana is any shorter than rapier. If you would just say that rapier is more effective weapon at least in duel, I would absolutely agree with you. As for battle field weapon I think a bit shorter and wider sword would be more optimal for infantry formation, something like Karl XII period Swedish infantry sword.

There is a point of balance somewhere along the blade. In some swords, it is fairly close to the hilt, which makes the tip more nimble for thrusting; in some swords it is further from the hilt, which makes the sword less nimble but gives more weight to cuts. It's not so much a case of being "precise" as being optimised for a particular style of use. Sharpening would remove tiny amounts of weight, almost negligible, and have no effect on the balance. The pommel itself is not there for balance - that's a common misconception. It may be for decoration, or to make the hand grip more securely, or (in some designs) help to protect the hand from cuts, or be a good shape for punching with, but it is not for balance. Balance is achieved by careful shaping of the blade so it gets narrower and thinner ("distal taper") towards the tip.

Protection. Not only for the hand but the defensive cone it creates behind it can also cover other parts of your body. You could say that the Verdadera Destreza first and foremost tries to get you out of a fight uninjured and that kind of hilt plays a role in this.

Over on Matt's portion of this conversation, he guesstimates that it is around 39 inches in length, which to me looks to be about right.

Nice, thanks. It's a pretty sword, no question about it, but it's tough to make out the length from a picture with just a white background. Maybe I need to take a vacation in France at some point and go take a look myself :D
