Fitting a hydraulic back end back on a Nuffield 3/45, 4/65, Leyland 344, 384, 245 or 253
Please note thus is an unedited version which shows that things do not always work easily and even professionals are made to struggle sometimes.
The noise in the background is part of oyr manufacturing so sorry if ir disturbs you

just tripped over this. I used to work on these and have to say you made it look like hard work! If you get 2 long bolts of the same thread. then cut the heads off and grind a taper on them, they make 2 guide bolts which you fit around half way up. Then put the PTO in gear and turn the output shaft to line it up. The back end will then just slide on the guide studs you made. If you take the top cover off, you can even lift the back end on and of your own on site/a feild if you have to. (Althoiugh I was much younger then!)

We had a 10/60 model. It was a 1967 model. It did not release the hydraulic pressure on the clutch, but it had a strong PTO shaft and a brake adjustment that was not stable. You adjust the brakes and the next day they would not hold the brakes evenly again.

Great video......A couple of guide studs would have made that a little easier though

I have replaced mine for a fine spline input on my 245 , you have be careful of a little control lever i think , and if its wrong the top arm will keep going up until it blows the top off , safe way to check is leave fuel off and crank engine with hydraulic lever in down , if it keeps going up ,its wrong , i think it can be sorted on the external link ? , sorry not a tractor expert, but will cause damage .

I am not saying that it was not said silently! It is always difficult to do a live video and this goes to show that we did not put it together first to show the sort of difficulties that real mechanics will have.

Hi just found this channel, I have a 272 1977 & the hydraulic arms, go down when the engine is shut down, , and also low on lift power. Do you have any advice on what's wrong or a video on the problem.

The back ends of the Nuffield and later Leyland models may look similar but there are several key differences. The big differences are the 1) top link mounting Bellville washers for draft control, became more robust from 4/65 onwards. 2) the shaft and tube for the PTO engagement in the 1970’s went from a simple shaft to a multi tooth ring and spline. From 4/65 (+ 3/45) Nuffield onwards can be converted. Way to spot the difference in later (better( PTO is only PTO in or out and no hydraulic disconnect. 3) The Hydraulics are similar but subtle differences too numerous to mention here. In summary all 3 and 4cyl Leylands back ends are similar but will not easily swap onto any Nuffield except the 4/65 (+ 3/45)
