The crew of a 50-foot yacht a few miles from the Strait of Gibraltar say orcas damaged the rudder of their boat and ultimately sank the vessel. The same pod has sunk at least five other boats since 2020. NBC’s Kelly Cobiella reports for TODAY.

I hypothesis that this is deliberate. The sonar, depth finding and other high frequency equipment affects the Orcas in a negative way. They don't like it. They also process what they see humans and other mammals/fish are doing. The other thing about Orcas is that they are a "learning" mammals. Meaning they teach each other and their next generation things. Their ability to learn and retain has been well documented for decades.

Sailors need stronger chemical sound sources that will scare orcas and other attackers away. Such generator may consist of a metal capsule filled with a chemical compound that is capable of rapid decomposition into volatile products with the release of about of 500 kJ of energy. This is the language orcs and orcas understand the best.

@@nelsonx5326 Which is why the compromise mentioned in the report sounded to me like a yachting season being suggested. These orcas move around themselves so will hopefully work out over time that the authorities have opened up a quieter time in the area for nature including orcas during one part of the year, while the sailing lanes get busier in another. This makes sense to me after visiting Devil's Tower in Wyoming where there's a climbing season for those who want to scramble all over the thing and another when the indigenous can use it for their ceremonies and such when climbing's forbidden for some months. Seems like the best deal that the orcas can really hope for in that section of the Med.

New Yorkers have long-term plans when they are hunting food which is every day. The orcas will follow and will Corral a school of fish. The boats might be heading for the school of fish that the orcas are stalking and they are trying to push the boat onto another course or stop them from interfering with their dinner. Orcas plan ahead they know what they're eating in 3 days from now do you

@rickkwitkoski1976 19 күн бұрын
No. These boats, sailboats, are NOT taking fish. Or only rarely. And in this area NO one is dragging a fishing line. Fishing boats are different. If the orcas are smart enough to bite off rudders and do other damage to the sailboats, they are smart enough to know the difference between fishing boats and sailboats. Sailboats don't travel very fast. Running their engines (engines) may get them to 6 or 7 knots. A fast catamaran or trimaran (a cruiser, not a racer) may get to 10 - 12 knots while sailing. Fishing boats will travel 15 knots and higher. These sailboats are being targeted by this ONE pod for some reason. But not for fishing competition.

Sure there’s no proof that it’s eliminating competition for food sources. But as someone who lives in gibraltar I can attest that our fish communities are radically decreasing due to spanish overfishing . Especially our tuna’s. Also a lot of the yachts in that area are there precisely to line fish the tuna during the open season for tuna fishing. So yeah, I’m gonna go with that they are eliminating competition because there are much much less tuna than there were.

These are not dumb animals. They recognize boats as competition for their food source. They may be trying to drive the boat away from a school of fish that they know are there that the humans don't know are there and the humans are interfering with the whales long-term plans. Whales are smart they do have long-term plans on what they're eating for dinner the next day or they wouldn't be migrating.
