In an exclusive interview with TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie, Darren Harrison speaks out about the heroic moment he landed a plane despite not having any flight experience after the pilot fell unconscious from a medical emergency. Harrison describes his determination to survive for his wife and unborn child, and recalls thinking “I can’t die today. Today is not my day.”

@@chloekaftan No. 747 Captain . Thirty two years International airline pilot. I know this is a fake story. This man has been flying this same airplane for years, although not licensed. The pilot and owner of the plane is Harrison's good friend. Harrison has flown in this exact plane for over 7 years. Most of those times Harrison sat in the right seat. Over that period of time he learned and observed a lot about how this plane operates. Although Harrison is not a licensed pilot he is far from being a novice.

This comment should be pinned at the top. The news acted as if this man knew nothing of flying whatsoever. His glide slope was perfect on landing - it's obvious he understood the basics of flight and had probably flown the plane himself on many occasions in the past while in the air.

the fact that he didn't call his wife until after it was over was also also a good call since you cant afford to get emotional in a situation where you need all the confidence you can muster. as common a trope it is in many many movies, its absolutely a bad idea to break your focus or lose your composure in a life or death situation which demands you at 100%.

This absolutely made my day....what an uplifting story. It reminds me of another, a situation where an 80 year old woman landed a Beechcraft King Air, most definitely an aircraft that requires an experienced pilot, after her husband died at the controls. The landing wasn't perfect...the plane drifted off the runway and the nose gear collapsed resulting in heavy damage...but she was unharmed.

I had a friend in the 90's who was on a plane with a pilot and he had a heart attack and unfortunately she tried to navigate the plane and they didn't make it. I had just attended her baptism. Her death was shocking and so very sad.

@@heha4132 right….and another question: He said that his EFIS displays were black. Yet, when the first controller told him to try a do a slow descent, he stated,” Right now I’m descending 550 per minute”…… If the EFIS was black, he had no VSI instrument. How did he know that he was descending at 550fpm? And even if he did have a VSI, someone with “zero flight experience “ would not know how to read the instrument……🤔
@bw4t
@bw4t 2 жыл бұрын
@@walthastingsRV-7A I have zero flight experience, but 1) I often flew in small commercial puddle-jumpers and quite a few times I was in the co-pilot's seat, and thus had opportunity to study the instrument panel, and 2) I was taught in grade school about things like altimeters and horizon indicators, how they work, and what they tell you. Also various other gauges and controls and what they are called. So although I have zero flight experience, I can more or less navigate my way around a simpler instrument panel and know how to read it.

Flaps are not required for light airplanes. They just help us fly a little slower for touchdown but not required at all until you’re in a very heavily loaded airplane then you’ll need that extra lift to slow enough for a typical length of runway.

What's your opinion of the man seated next to the pilot? Is there anything he could of done to help out? Or was handing off the headset pretty much the extent of it? Nice to have a pilot commenting.
@luislaurencio

@@theplaintruth4794 nothing he could have done, if he could he would have done something. Everhthing that happened was actually the best outcome to be honest, i still dont understand how lucky this guy was that there was no wind, the plane didnt bounce, yaw damper must have helped a lot, rudder control is very important and it usually takes around 30 hours for student pilots to get used to it
