In this video:
A quick online search of Aspartame will provide you with numerous opinions about this artificial sweetener. Some claim it causes things like cancer, seizures, multiple sclerosis, lupus, memory problems and brain tumors. Just about every governmental organization in the world, regulating food products, have deemed it safe for human consumption. (But, you know, just about every governing body in the world still gets the “sodium raises blood pressure” myth wrong, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary, so let’s not take their word on the whole Aspartame thing!)

Today I Found Out please delete or redo this video you. As an engineer/scientists I find it appalling how videos of such incredibly harmful misinformation get spread. Aspartame is extreme dangerous and it’s rise to acceptance is a terrifying example of the high level corruption that happens in a capitalistic country. Any study you read that ignores or downplays the effects of aspartame are likely sponsored by the very company that has the most to gain from its use. Almost every truly independent study reveals multiple significant side effects.

Well artificial sweeteners helped me lose a lot of weight and get off of half my meds. I drink diet drinks and 5 calorie packs. I used to drink lots of regular soft drinks. It might not be the best but for me drinking 8 to 12 cans of soda a day was way worse. People think that everyone is a wheat grass eating health nut. If you are great but if not there's probably other things you are eating that are as bad or worse. I eat other processed foods too. I'm down from 30 meds to 15 meds and down by almost 100 lbs. One size does not fit all.

to lose weight keep away from something that is sweetened with fructose because the body stock it as fat and it gives nothing to your blood sugar and you end up as diabetics as with all other artificial sweeteners that destroys your hormones in the small intestine that is responsible for the absorption of sugar and therefore gives diabetic, and there is sugar in all natural food from nature

Vlad Rosé it doesn’t matter in the end, humans have been eating normal sugar for hundreds of years, the case evidence for the safety of sugar is multigenerational at this point. There maybe side effects that we just don’t know about yet, Aspartame is too new to know the long term ramifications. For me though I avoid Aspartame because it tastes like ass, the after taste is especially fouls.

I know. I lost a lot of weight and got off tons of meds by switching regular soda for 5 calorie packs and diet drinks. I lost almost 100 lbs. It's amazing how many people tell me that regular sugar is better for them while they drink a 32 oz regular soda and can't figure out why they can't lose weight. Most of us aren't on a super healthy diet so it's no different than all the other chemicals. Some people seem to be more sensitive but that doesn't mean one size fits all. I used to wouldn't touch it until I found out I had gout and found out the role fructose plays at least for some people especially those who drink a lot of regular soda. I drank 8 to 12 12 oz cans a day. So I really hate all of this negativity like it's the worst substance on earth.

Side Effects except if you drink soda especially more than 6 oz. Will quickly see its effects. I have watch people start using aspartame. Drink diet sodas at 24 oz minimum a day. Basically gain weight and often at marginally alarming rates. Not saying they are taking more than he says here to cause issue. But you can clearly observe its effects in moderate quantities. I myself want to throw up after have even minor amounts. My stomach feels sick for day or so after. Also have found any foods containing it quickly exit in diaries form. So yes it’s got issues and this isn’t uncommon issue. Also you’ll see consumers energy levels not have endurance.

I've heard and read a lot of stuff about aspartame, but this is the first time I've actually seen its full structural formula. Also, most material supporting aspartame's safety mentions the two amino acids in it and conveniently neglects to mention the methanol. This video actually seems like a fair and balanced presentation of the facts. Congratulations, Simon.

It doesn't matter. A certain molecule being a functional group on another molecule isn't going to act the same way as it does on its own. That concept is laughable. I love TIFO but it's quackery to pretend that what the groups would do if separated has anything to do with reality. It's not even actually methanol anymore. It's missing a hydrogen. If you wanna get into facts that are technically correct but mean nothing (like that aspartame has a methanol group).

Try the same with water and see what happens!" Good to know that more and more studies have continued to prove the safety of the chemical that makes sweets edible for diabetics.

Aspartame was actually initially approved in 1974 but pulled back right before it hit the market because of some concerns. The FDA put together a task force and went over the 168 studies GD searle submitted and concluded it as safe in 1981. Aspartame since this time has been one of the most studied food products on earth. Basically Nothing else in the way of food has been studied this much and if it was harmful we would DEFINITELY know. Good video! I had to give a presentation on this to some colleagues recently.

It was just admitted that ordinary vaccines have caused a lot of deaths. Trusting these "scientists" that are on the payroll of companies that have billions invested in the products that they try to claim are safe to use, is just naive. Medical companies have a horrific track record of putting substances out there that are extremely harmfull or even lethal. They are forced to redraw several substances every year because their initial reassurance proved to be false. Still we are supposed to trust these people with our lives? I am considered being a stupid tin foil hat for not trusting this "science" that over, and over again has proven that it can not be trusted... I dont trust ppl that continuously lie to me. It is a very basic cognitive function and a survival mechanism that we have for a reason. If my life is at stake, Im willing to take the chance and hope that this medication may save my life. Very much the same way even the most hard core atheist probably will pray as the plane he is in, is plummeting towards the ground. But as long as I have a choice, I chose not to trust compulsive liars , by stuffing my body full with things they want me to buy in order to make their stock rise. It's just common sense.

+HexagonicDistortion: "It was just admitted that ordinary vaccines have caused a lot of deaths. " ==How much is a lot? Source please. Without a reliable source, we just have an internet meme. A meme is a mind virus. Let’s not run around like little chicken about stories how the sky is falling. “these "scientists" that are on the payroll of companies that have billions invested in the products that they try to claim are safe to use” ==Safe to use means that the drug is transferred to other companies for testing. The company that does the testing doesn’t even know which sample is the real drug and which one is the placebo. They just report their findings back to the company. If there is a benefit, then it is approved. I have participated in a test and it was for an artificial sweetener. “I dont trust ppl that continuously lie to me.” ==Nobody is lying. If you are talking about viruses, yes, it can kill people. If you expect perfection, then open your own company and let’s see how good you are. I have read a few stories about jewhova witnesses that refuse blood transfusion and die. These people are stupid and they blindly trust some story from thousands of years ago that comes from superstitious jews. I have read one story where a couple did not take their kid to the hospital and he died. Then, they did the same with their second child. They have been prosecuted for murder. They resorted to praying which did not work. “If my life is at stake, I’m willing to take the chance and hope that this medication may save my life.” ==Look at the very first line in your post. Do you know what a vaccine is? “Very much the same way even the most hard core atheist probably will pray as the plane he is in” ==This is invented by religious believers. They think that an atheist is going to pray for the god that they believe in while the reality is that there are thousands of gods invented by thousands of cultures. What makes anyone think that praying will work? Why not get up and do some breakdancing for Santa Claus? Maybe he can come by with his magical reindeer.

I'd rather a small minority of the population suffer ill effects from vaccines than see a plague/smallpox/measles/polio epidemic break out. Krytern UK Diet Coke is actually a different formula from Coke besides the sweetener. But I've been told other lite versions of drinks don't taste any different, and they're full of it. I had to stop drinking a brand of tea I really liked because they switched to Splenda and claimed their focus group couldn't tell when I wrote an inquiry about it.

OtakuUnitedStudio - It is so easy to tell a difference. Get a cup of coffee or tea with sugar in it, make the exact same cup with sweetener in it.... Difference is night and day. Their focus group probably never drank that kind of tea before.

Krytern UK There actually is a reason that they could reasonably claim this - a focus group is given small samples, and cherry picked to death so they tell the research team exactly what they already want to hear. There are people who can't taste the difference - about 1 in 4 people has fewer than average taste buds, and there may be a specific genetic link associated with how certain things are tasted that mean different people have different subjective experiences from the same substances.

Your video is very good and informative, but it leaves out an important point in the whole debate: Whether or not the consumption of sugar replacements in general lead to an increase of the risk of diabetes mellitus type 2. The argument is very straight: You let your body think that you consume sugar, your body gets ready to process the sugar but only finds 1/100 amount of aspartame instead of the sugar that he expected to find. One can easily understand that this might cause damage to the way we process sugar and lead to diabetes. A clear up on that topic would be great!

Migraines are a poor example of something having a harmful effect, even if aspartame specifically is causing them, migraines are often caused by very widely spread reasons. You could talk to 20 people who suffer from migraines and get 20 different triggers. Reasons for migraines are poorly understood and inconsistent. For example, both me and my brother get migraines, mine are cause by stress to my neck, while my brother gets them if he has caffeine too soon after he wakes up.

That would be interesting! I'd like to see the money trail, because it seems as soon as one sweetener's patents run out it is suddenly vilified in favor of the new, "safer" and patented HIGHER PROFIT sweetener. Cyclamates fell to saccharine, which then fell to the new, safe aspartame, which then fell to sucralose, which is now falling to stevia. In ten years everyone will be buzzing that stevia is bad for you, and we'll be on to the next thing.

Just wanted to comment that Stevia is a plant, so it's not exactly artificial like the others. Ideally you want to get the kind that's made similar to how sugar is, where they steep the stevia leafs in alcohol, and let it evaporate, leaving behind just the crystals.

Stevia being a plant and thus being natural is not necessarily an indication of safety. If you offer me a choice of a paracetamol tablet (factory-made) and spoonful of cyanide (naturally occurring), guess what I will choose.. Relative risks are very difficult to understand by non-experts. I use as a rule of thumb to distrust anyone who needs to put their argument forwards in all-caps, or on a poster whose only purpose is scaring people. Being afraid of any form of nuance or criticism is also a red flag..

You don't get Migraines. Migraine is something you're born with. Sugar and some sweeteners are some of the many known triggers for migraine. And yes alcohol is yet another trigger. Migraine is one of the most common neurological diseases to exist, yes it's a chronic disease that can be inherited from parents to child. It's usually preceded by prodromes and then auras. A migraine aura is a symptom that happens right before the headache which is a migraine's main symptom. Temporary visual impairment, muscular spasms are common auras for migraine. As for prodromes, irritability, hunger and depressions are some common prodromes. If you feel any of these after eating or drinking something sweet, know that a aura may soon to follow and then a headache. Although some people may not get any headaches at all, which is my case. I only get visual auras and nothing more.

I am trying to lose weight, as I actually need to, and one way I am doing so is by taking small steps. I drink on average about 4 cans of soda a day. That is allot of sugar. It has had a very adverse affect on my weight, and other health problems. So I revealed my plan to replace my soda with diet soda for now, as I eventually also replace it with more water, and natural fruit juice. My friends said it was worse. I did some research on it before, but trying to explain to them is like talking to a wall sometimes. This video explains it very well. I am not just trying to say I can drink diet soda, and I will just magically lose all these pounds of weight. I don't think they understand the intention, that I want to progress in my moderation, not cut right to it, which I have tried doing before and ultimately failed. All in all, I simply want to live healthier, consume less sugars, and eat food that is more beneficial. That is the end goal. And I am GOING to do it.

Why don't you grab carbonated water and fill it up with lemon juice, for instance? If you start drinking orange juice on a regular basis you'll still be consuming enormous amounts of sugar, so you should stay away from that as well. Also, don't forget to monitor the amount of estrogen you're consuming. Might as well buy a pack of Animal Test to block estrogen and promote testosterone production. If you can pair A-Test with a couple push-ups that you gradually increase overtime it'd be perfect. It doesn't really matter if you drink regular or diet, as concluded by Purdue university, and here's why: www.purdue.edu/newsroom/releases/2013/Q3/prof-diet-drinks-are-not-the-sweet-solution-to-fight-obesity,-health-problems.html

Aspartame is also the excrement of GMO bacteria farmed in sewage sludge, bout2freek. Need proof of what poison tastes like pretty much, Ben Reed? Take a big whiff of anti-freeze coolant for any vehicle. That stuff smells exceedingly sweet and smells like a fantastic drink. Of course that stuff will kill you quick should you drink even a little of it. The only difference between these two major toxins is anti-freeze coolant is promoted as such; it's for vehicle radiator coolant ONLY. With Aspartame, it's been known in legitimate Scientific studies and experiments to break down into it's three primary components rather easily. So much so that it's component breakdown temperature happens in hot coffee roughly in the low 100*F temps. While cane sugar breaks down when you set it on fire into carbon, hydrogen, and it's other components, and simply dissolves completely in hot coffee. This is just assuming you don't drop a bag of sugar into a tiny cup of coffee that is. I think the reason why Today I Found Out is so flip-floppy on this video is not because it's about Aspartame itself, but rather most of the studies they found and talked about in this video are based on Junk Science instead of legitimate Science. The legitimate scientists last I knew who proved beyond a shadow of a doubt even low dosages of Aspartame and it's even deadlier and ultra sweeter variant, Neotame, have been thoroughly discredited. Before anyone flips their wig, just know it's very easy to discredit anyone these days. Cutting down someone online is effectively discrediting them. There have been many, many mysterious scientist, microbiologist, and others who have died over the decades proving Aspartame/Neotame are as dangerous for your health as some of the other deadlier chemicals on Earth. Good luck to anyone who wants to do their own Aspartame/Neotame research. While Today I Learned's video on Aspartame is fairly decent, it winds up inadvertently proves that there are alot of Government and independent researchers who defend their camps well. Government is in it for the money while the good independent researchers are doing their research largely for the truth. As a side note, Today I Learned channel producer(s), take a look into who were on the boards for each Corporate and Government sides, as well as independent researchers. It's not so much the results from each and every study and experiment on Aspartame as so much as the whole circus acts involved. Gotta ask yourself "Just why IS Aspartame the single most contested chemical around?". It's not by accident why Aspartame is the way it is and has been for decades.

Sugar also has an after taste, one that is more persistent actually. This type of aversion is subjective of course. Since I find the aftertaste of aspartame to be less enduring than sugar, I prefer the diet versions better. On a video debunking nonsense about imagined health fears, promoting equally dubious claims or assertions about the supposed benefits of ‘organic’ food seems out of place. There are no known benefits to organic food and plenty of disadvantages (cost, environmental degradation due to lower yields, waste due to spoilage, etc.). This is an example of the naturalistic fallacy. Might be interesting to cover this subject in a future video.

Measure a volume of water, and put it your mouth for a while, then spit it back into the cup! It's actually likely more, cause of a little bit of spit being added.. ick. It's part of the gag reflexes functions. I typically rinse my mouth out with Hydrogen Peroxide cause every mouth wash ever has sweet shit in it that stays on my sensitive teeth defeating the purpose, and that is stuff you REALLY don't want to swallow! So, as long as you rinse well, you should never actually swallow any noticeable amount of toothpaste! i mean, of coarse tiny amounts are going to seep through, but tiny amounts of things rarely have an effect on your body, it can typically filter them out without any difference.

Since the sweetness on your tongue primes your body for sugar and releases a lil bit of insulin, then your blood sugar level goes down because it thinks its getting more sugar but then no sugar comes, so your body is then low on sugar. hes not saying it causes cancer and stuff, but what he says it does is lead to blood sugar levels to change oddly.

Like I get that some of you as individuals have a food sensitivity or allergy to aspartame and have migraines and other health issues as a result. But did it ever occur to you that just because it makes you sick doesn't mean it's going to make the rest of us sick? That just because you shouldn't eat it, doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't? That maybe, just maybe, you aren't the center of the universe and your personal experiences should not dictate the personal experiences of others?

That's fair. I'm used to living in America, where a sugary drink is the norm and aspartame is the alternative rather than it being the other way around. It's a shame Britain doesn't expand more on artificial sweeteners. Just because one gives you a bad reaction doesn't mean they all will.

@@brandonle6236 I mean since when is something being natural have anything to do with whether or not it's good for you? poison ivy is natural doesn't mean you want to eat it. Mushrooms are natural and of the millions of species there is like what 10? we can eat. All the others way more toxic than aspartame. As far as where aspartame comes from, it's sort of natural. Not that it matters if it is or not but it's the waste product of E. Coli and E. coli is in nature. Considering you have more bacterial cells than human cells in your body, all of which are producing waste, including E. coli, I'm not sure why you feel it to be dangerous. It has four decades of research behind and no real harm is found unless you consume mass quantities of it. (or unless of course you as an individual are sensitive to it as stated previously) On that note, Diabetes is genetic and often triggered by the over consumption of sugar. Diet soda temporarily raises blood sugar, as does drinking water, but otherwise diet soda has been found to be safe for diabetics so I can assure you that if I, or any family members got diabetes we will be sure to pile on the sugar substitutes, including aspartame. On a final note. I'm sorry you have to wish harm on individuals when you try and make an argument. What a sad life you must live if you have to wish poorly on someone in order to try and make yourself feel better when failing to prove a point.

I actually just want to say something, your diagram of the chemical is slightly wrong. What you labelled as Methanol is not an alcohol, though it makes methanol through a process call hydrolysis, but there is no OH group that is not an acid in your picture. Though I get what you meant by dividing the molecule by color saying that is what it breaks down to. Sorry for being that person, but years of chemistry have made me notice things like that.

Aspartame is not bad for you. But I myself can not tolerate it. After a week of drinking soda pop with aspartame instead of sugar... my stomach starts to hurt. I stop drinking the sugar free and i'm fine again. It took me several months to figure out what it was... but I now know to avoid aspartame in my drinks. (I now drink non-soda sugar free drinks, basically lightly flavoured water.) I used to drink solely "Lemonade" of a english brand from Morrisons. Untill they changed the recipe and it affected me badly. (they added aspartame to the ingredients along with sugar...)

I did read an article about a study of diet soda vs sugary soda drinkers. The headline was that drinking diet soda makes you something like 0.3% more likely to contract Alzheimer's. But the other takeaway was that sugar drinkers were 0.3% more likely to die before reaching the age where Alzheimer's sets in.

Next to the Spanish text was some daily maximum intake amount advice for Aspartame that was absent from my UK English text. I figured the Spanish food regulatory body required that warning to be there for a reason, even if other countries (such as my own) were more lax. Been wary of Aspartame ever since.

Since aspartame is not merely a MIXTURE of the three ingredients, but a molecule made by COMBINING molecules of those ingredients, its real effect in the body depends on WHETHER AND HOW it breaks up in the body. If it is excreted before breaking down, then any damage it does would be due to the catalytic effects on OTHER chemicals in the tissues which encounter it. If it does break down, then what is produced by the breakdown, and in what amounts? These "metabolic products" are the ones which may or may not produce ill effects. And as for methanol and formic acid, these are already found in trace amounts in the human body and in various foods. HONEY in particular contains minute amounts of formic acid, because the bees inject it into each newly filled cell with their stingers as a preservative (its name comes from "formica," the Latin word for "ant," and is an ingredient in the venoms of ants, bees, and other hymenoptera; but as venom it is injected into the bloodstream, not eaten). I am only raising questions; I do not know the answers. But I suspect that long term effects would be very slight at normal usage amounts, and dependent on the dose. However, it does have the short term effect of enhancing flatulence and causing diarrhea in some people, which is enough reason to avoid it unless such a laxative effect is desired.

In fact, aspartame metabolizes into 50% phenyalanine, 40% aspartic acid, and 10% methanol. It does NOT break up along the lines presumed by Whistler in the video. Phenylalanine is an amino acid found in mammalian milk and is sold as a dietary supplement. It is an essential amino acid that we do not produce and we must be consume foods that contain it. Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid involved in protein synthesis. It is also available as a supplement. Methanol is metabolized to formaldehyde and then formic acid, which is why you don't drink moonshine from backwoods stills. But only 1/10 of your spoonful of coffee sweetener (which is mostly fillers to make it look more like sugar) becomes methanol, so you'd have to eat it by the boxful all day to get a dangerous amount of formic acid in your system.

What about the claims that artifical sweeteners mess with you metabolism and/or cause weight gain? Some people claim it's physical, tricks your body in some way and messes with how you digest sugars. Others say the intense sweetness changes your palate so that normal amo uh nystagmus if sugar don't taste sweet enough so you start consuming more sugar in other foods. Might all be bs, but curious

According to a couple recent studies it does mess with your metabolism. Studies have found out that regular consumption food items sweetened with aspartame slightly increases the chance to contract diabetes type 2 when compared to similar levels of consumption of the same food items sweetened with sugar(so regular coke compared to coke light). I think most people can guess why only now these studies can come to these results, just like one would generally only find out if something causes cancer after decades of exposure by actually having those decades of exposure. However I doubt there is a reason to panic ban aspartame, since we are talking about a couple studies and a slightly increased chance. If anything we need more studies to confirm it's not just a coincidence or due to the nature of the study. After all a study checking whether X or Y is better or worse will always have a conclusion with one of the two being worse(unless both x and y end up exactly the same).
@tohopes
@tohopes 7 жыл бұрын
Probably any such study has measured the correlation between consumption and health results. That is not sufficient to establish whether or not the particular substance "messes with" your metabolism. It's always a plausible explanation that people with otherwise poor diets are also more likely to choose to consume the substance in question.

I did read one research paper about aspartame which was focused on its impact on gut bacteria and it found that if you had compromised gut bacteria (such as having gone on long term antibiotics) then aspartame could inhibit what remained. The effect presumably also occurs in normal people but it just isn’t noticed because the result is comparatively much less.

Well, I've essentially been drinking diet soda since I was a kid, in fact I've been drinking it in place of water. That's probably not healthy, but I go through between 6-12 cans a day. I don't really drink tea or coffee much either, so the diet soda is almost the only thing I drink. I know far more people who have gotten sick from tap water than from diet soda (I don't know why, though... maybe chlorine or algae?). So as long as I'm alive and not suffering any major organ or brain damage, then I'm a walking human test case showing that it can't be that bad for you. I'm not even dehydrated or overweight as most people would expect from someone that drinks soda all the time.
