In this video:
Few board games have the ability to cause arguments like Monopoly, an unsurprising fact given the object of the game it was based on (see: Who Invented Monopoly?) was to send your opponent to the poor house while you bask in the pleasures of immense wealth and prosperity. In the eight decades or so the game has existed, the rules of Monopoly haven’t really changed all that much, but because everyone “knows” how to play, how people actually play the game has slowly diverged from what the actual rule book, which nobody ever bothers to read, says. In anticipation of various family get-togethers coming up this holiday season, in which you’ll no doubt be subjected to a game of Monopoly at some point, in this article, we’re going to correct the various ways you’ve probably been playing Monopoly wrong your whole life.

There's only one problem with this video and it is that landing on the "go" space does in fact mean that you get double the money ($400). Here's the excerpt from the rules: If the player lands on or passes Go in the course of his or her turn, he or she receives $200 from the Bank. A player has until the beginning of his or her next turn to collect this money. If a player lands on go then the money collected is doubled.

Monopoly: “Free Parking” is pretty self explanatory, no one should mess this up. Kids: Well obviously it means you put all the taxes collected by the bank in the middle and if you land on Free Parking, you collect all the money. Those kids as adults: What!?! The problem, which the uploader pointed out, is that the fastest way to play the game is by playing the official rules. People don't realize how severe the domino effect is when you introduce some made up rule like loaning other players money. The console/PC version Monopoly Plus is even faster. Everything is automated and fast. Games rarely take longer than 2 hours on those versions.

Probably nobody read the rules, and unlike a lot of other games where the rules are much more self-explanitory, Monopoly probably suffers from millions of people collectively reiterating the rules wrong, and thus other people tell new people the rules wrong, and so on and so forth.

It's due to the terrible house rules. The tax is there to reduce the money in the game, which significantly speeds up the game. People usually start with too much starting money. We used to played without auctions, when I was a kid, so you had to land on property to buy it and you could only build houses on your set if you landed on one of those streets again. With these rules you usually had to pass go 3-4 times before the game got kind of interesting.

I agree. A lot of these games are made to function a specific way and throwing in house rules when you don't really understand the larger impact of those house rules can make the game significantly worse. I personally dislike Monopoly, but after seeing this video, I'm pretty sure the reason I don't like it is because of the house rules everyone plays with. I'd love to try a game of Monopoly using strictly rules as written.

All games should be played by the rules agreed to before the game begins. Based on the presumption that the game's designer might have put a bit more thought into it than whatever moron came up with that Free Parking jackpot house rule, the written rules should be used unless a good case can be made to modify them. Every house rule I have ever heard of for Monopoly does one of two things. It either dumbs down the game or makes it longer. I have never understood the appeal of making an already annoyingly long game longer

Great video! I married into a family who always read the rules to every game regardless it’s popularity. So imagine my surprise to find out the real rule regarding “free parking,” among other rules. I was shocked that I’d never read or even heard the real rules my entire life! However it made the game more desirable to play as I never really enjoyed playing monopoly much before since it took too long to play.

People only read the rules they were unsure about. As the youngest player, I never read the rules because it would only lead to ridicule because the older players always "knew" the rules. Like you I never enjoyed the game, and agree that these rules are better. But then... any rule that makes the game faster is an improvement. For us the rule is that the game is not allowed to take up space in our house. Speeds things up immensely.

Nothing should happen. It is however a rather valuable spot to land when there are houses built all around and serves as a good moment to chill out. The oranges are very popular and getting past them is massive. Course if you can roll 10 the hard ways or 6-4 then jail after is vital too! If we are playing for real money at home, we tend to agree on fines and taxes going into middle and free parking triggering pay-out. Can be a bit of a blue shell effect!

Wow, I actually just did this on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've been playing the game via PS4, and the game rules are hard written into that version, so I got very used to them. The rest of my family had not known little things like the rules stating if you get mortgaged property from a bankrupted player, you're required to actually pay off the mortgage in full, or pay 10% just to keep the thing in it's mortgaged state upon receiving it. Taught them the proper way to play, and we've been having a lot more fun with the game... until someone wants to grind the game to a halt by never trading.

Here are some fun facts to add as well. After the success of Monopoly (Owned by Parker Brothers at the time) Milton Bradly wanted to make their own version and called it Easy Money. It's a similar premise to Monopoly, move your player around multiple properties and be the last one standing. What's odd is some of the rules will sound familiar. There are spaces on the board for "accidents". Either Car or Plane, which the player needs to pay the hospital for. This money goes in the center of the board (not the bank), and can only be collected by the player who lands on the Hospital (sound like free Parking?). The other thing is the stipulation of buying properties. Before a player can improve their properties (add another house) , or buy more, they must first buy a property on each of the 4 sides on the board (similar to the not buying property until rounding the board once). One pretty big difference though is the end of the game. It's Monopoly it's last player standing. Here, as soon as one player is Bankrupt, the games ends. Whoever has the most amount of Money Wins. I love both games, but I find people more willing to play Easy Money than Monopoly.

My mom and I had a monopoly game that ended in a draw after 16 hours. It was brutal and we were at a stand still. We bought all the property on the board and bought all the hotels. We ran out of hotels and had to have 4 houses on some of our properties.

You just run around the board and hope to get lucky to get all three of one property and get hotels. When you bid, all the properties get distributed very quickly and the real game can begin.

In an older monopoly junior version of the game(German), where free parking is, is a field called wundertüte(Lucky Bag). Basically everytime tax is payed, it is collected into the bag. And if you land on it, you get the money. It was literally in the rule book of that version. That’s probably why most play with that rule Edit: in the English version the space is called Uncle Pennybag's Loose Change

Not really. You have so much starting money that the actual chance of buying the street you need via auction is very unlikely. Usually you end up with a stalemate or the incredibly slow death of one player followed by a sprint for property and another period of stagnation or slow death. This is why professional monopoly is horseshit. Yes there is strategy here but the luck of the dice is still far more relevant for your success rate.

aBoogivogi - Actually Monopoly is very much a game of skill when played by the rules, and I have always played strictly by the rules, even as a child. It is not luck that I have not lost a single game of Monopoly in over 45 years, its skill. In fact, I once took over for a friend who was loosing badly and, not only did I come back from behind, but I completely wiped out the other players in less than an hour. Obviously there is a degree of chance involved in Monopoly, just as there is in Poker, but in both of these games the most skilled players will always come out on top.
@aBoogivogi
@aBoogivogi 5 жыл бұрын
If your definition of a skill based game is poker then yeah I understand why you would think this makes monopoly skill based. Don't get me wrong there are skills involved in poker, but at the end of the day luck is still more important. Sure you can still win by bluffing now and then, but in the long run luck of the draw will win every time. Naturally playing on the kitchen table with a few friends and shuffling by hand with a single deck is wildly different. At the end of the day a dice game where you have very little control of the flow of the game aside from rolling a dice will never be particularly skill based. There is no long term strategy that ensures your revenue it's all down to the roll of the dice of other players. Heck when getting put in jail is a viable mid to late game strategy something is fucking wrong with your game.

But unfortunately just two players... I've always thought Chess could be far more exciting with an expanded board incorporating more players in a single game (perhaps like an X shape for 4 players or something). Seems like a pretty simple tweak not really requiring any major changes to the rules, excepting maybe a slight modification to pawn movements and any game that didn't have, say, a minute clock or something would probably be intolerable with too many players. It might also be interesting to have the rule be if you or an alliance defeats another's king, you or your alliance is awarded all the player's remaining pieces (divided up in the case of an alliance). Last King standing wins.
