Agreed. However, I certainly wish those who conduct interviews come up with some interesting and unique questions. Todd will certainly provide a thorough and thoroughly interesting answer. An interesting question, even if not a great one, was a question I heard asked [by Kasim Sulton if I remember correctly] was" Have you ever eaten a crayon?". I mean this guy doesn't seem to actually know when Todd was inducted into the RRHoF, nor his reason for his ambivalence about it. I don't know who Adam Carolla is, but I'm not impressed.

@@UltraVTV420 Todd is not on the radar of the general music-loving public. His catalog is so very unique and unusual. But the questions were so very generic! Oh, well. At least they had him on and Adam seemed to really appreciate him. I just read a piece about Todd in this week's New Yorker Magazine. Brief but sweet.

I just turned 64 on this day. I saw Todd and Utopia at San Diego State in 1984 or 1985 when I was in the Navy. They opened for The Tubes and I'll remember this concert until the end. Thanks for all the great music you gave us through the years. "Leroy, boy, is that you?" Thanks Todd.

@@h.m.7218 Interesting, H.M. and Michael... I sort of just discovered this guy Fee Waybill on... um, KZfaq. That must've been a wild show! Watched some interviews w/ Waybill and he seemed to be carping about Todd and the Love Bomb album, implying that it sort of put the kibosh on their career. But he did say he and Todd are on good terms. The first 7 or 8 albums I bought in high school were all Rundgren albums and my first show was the Initiation tour. Cheers

Great interview with Todd. When I was in my 20s I saw him for the first time in Indy in a club, the guys I was with talked me into knocking on his trailer after show. I’m thinking I’m not a groupie. I just love music. And I loved Todd’s music. So I knocked lightly not having a clue as to how I was gonna explain why I’m there (other than telling myself don’t make an ass out of yourself.). Well I was walking away when Todd opened the door. He just invited me in. His back up singer was there (eventually his wife). He didn’t ask why are you here so that hurdle was overcome. And yes I did make an ass out of myself. I rambled on about his music, something about Midnight special. Hell I don’t remember. They were so nice and gracious. I didn’t want to take up to much of their time so after awhile I asked if I could have an autograph. All I had in my purse to write on was a teeny phone/address book. He said “I’ll put it right by Lionel Ritchie.” I laughed thinking he thinks I’m a groupie and like pop (though I did LOVE the Commodores). Anyway maybe a week later I realized it was because his last name was R and so was Ritchie. Hahaha. He actually put it in the Qs by mistake. Anyway got to meet him and he and his lady friend were no nice as idiotic as I must’ve sounded. Still got that address book somewhere…

Btw despite my feelings, I truly tried to have a “can’t we Still be Friends” relationship with my ex. Unfortunately no. He smeared me and did things to hurt our kids because he knew it would hurt me. Love what Todd says about being a parent. It’s no great sacrifice to be there for your kids. Being a mother was the best thing I did. I unfortunately did get a divorce (he was cheating, I knew it, refused to say him explicitly being sexual to coworkers was okay), I couldn’t do it anymore. It was hard on my kids and honestly harder for me. The days they were with their dad were excruciating for me. When you’re a mom you never fathom you’ll miss a day in their life. Didn’t help he was immediately in a relationship with woman he “was definitely not” having an affair with and remarried shortly thereafter. I’m rambling on but what Todd said struck a nerve. Todd is a good guy. ❤

I was a fan since i was just a boy and saw a few of his concerts and was afraid to meet him because if he was a jerk, I'd have to throw away all the records, cd's, i met him finally in thr 80's and he was very nice, almost bashful, then i met him and Michelle a few times, both just extremely gracious, normal, nice people. Todd's music has been a foundation for many phases of my life. I couldn't live this guy more.

It is hurtful. Todd is my favorite of all time - he's a wonder to me since about 1970. I was 7. 59 years old now. My young adult daughters (age 22) now share the love and respect for his music, and will carry it on. He gave us these gifts, and I gave it to my kids. I can separate the differing world views between myself and this artist, and I wish he could too. He must not understand that kind people with huge hearts and love for the world can see things differently. It's very conflicting to me daily, to be honest, as I will not stop listening to his music, and singing his praises regardless. He's the only one I'd care to see in concert again in these weird times. But I don't want my heart broken in person. The words in his song "Parallel Lines" sum it up, I guess. Beautiful song. But sad.

I felt the way you do about Joni Mitchell last year when she called for her music to be pulled from Spotify over Rogans comments (which turned out to be correct, depending on if you believe the Israeli study). This woman wrote :both sides now' which I believe are the best lyrics ever written and they perfectly describe my changing perspective from tribal conservative to fierce anti tribal moderate. Such a shame to see.

Agreed. Todd is a great guy but like most liberals never criticizes anyone with a D after their name. For example, when talking about the children of politicians he mentions Baron Trump, who for all intents is a well adjusted teen, also Marjorie Taylor Green’s kids. But not one mention of the behemoth of Presidential offspring, Hunter Biden. What sort of parenting produces such a corrupt and perverted individual? THAT is your prime example of a messed up offspring of someone in politics.

He just can't help it. It's really sad. He's brighter than that. I lost a lot of respect for him calling out a teen, Barron Trump, but not even mentioning Hunter Biden. If you're going to mtalk about f*cked up political offspring, Hunter is the poster child. But he has a D after his name, so it's hand's off.

I wish an interviewer would ask what a producer actually does in recording. I've never heard it explained.

triple5 it’s different in each situation. Sometimes plays bass and gives input on composition. Sometimes gets coffee and gives counseling. Often times sets scheduling and logistics as well as cat herding.

There's many parts to being a producer. One is to make sure that stuff actually gets recorded, rather than the band just sitting around doing drugs. Another is to direct the cohesive sound of the album and to make sure it's well recorded. Todd's most famous production, Meatloaf's _Bat Out of Hell,_ Todd directed the band, played guitar, did most of the background vocals, and did all the arrangements. Jim Steinman wrote the songs, but could not actually write music, and according to Meatloaf, Steinman would *hum* what he wanted to Todd, who would turn it into actual band arrangements. With XTCs _Skylarking,_ Todd picked all the songs from a bunch of demos, arranged them into an order that made sense. Andy Partridge got all miffed because Todd picked songs that were actually written by another member of the band. (And he was annoyed that Todd was so much _better_ at sarcasm than he was.) With other albums, like the one for the _Tubes,_ Todd wrote songs for the band, and recorded guide vocals to give them an idea exactly what it should sound like. As Todd told more than one of the bands that he was working with, _"If you know what you want, I can get it for you. If you don't know what you want, I can do it for you."_

I am a foremost lifelong Rundgren fan, and have a KZfaq channel where I do a lot of reproducing his piano tracks. He is my musical idol and he has a brilliant mind, obviously. Alas, I don't like his kneejerk lefty politics, and calling Baron Trump's dad a "prick" on a national interview is...well, hypocritical. I thought you cared about the fatherhood thing, Todd, huh? It's a good lesson in it being always better NOT to know of an artist's personal opinions. That said, it was a mostly insightful interview, and Todd proves himself very wise in most instances. Nevertheless, I'm sure it is very easy to be wealthy and live in Hawaii while the rest of America's average folks are getting ripped off for food and gas and rent and have to watch an idiot senile Biden wage stupid wars and allow millions of unvetted illegals into the country, all of which is costing taxpayers billions -- the same taxpayers who are paying $19 a pound for a cut of meat.
